AUTOMOBILE OF VOL. XXVI—NO. 198 NORTH TAKES UP APPLEBY PLAN And now it's Oakland that will operate under Anaheim's used car plan! This is the largest city yet to consider the plan favorably. Action was scheduled for last night, following a meeting this week at which President Jim Appleby of the Orange County Motor Car Dealers' Association was the guest of honor. Seventy-five were present at the meeting, which was held at the Hotel Oakland, with Bob Martland, Secretary of the California State Auto Trades Association, a leading figure. In addition to this spreading reputation of the plan, the president of one of the principal motor car companies in the country, has endorsed it. Finally, Motor West, in its issue of April 1, which reached the city yesterday, devotes a page to the subject under the caption "Appleby's Used Car Sales Plan." Some of the advantages of the plan are stated by the magazine are: 40 CARS SOLD BY DUNTON IN MARCH With handicapped force and the confusion of moving to Santa Ana, the Anaheim branch of George Dunton sold 26 new Ford cars, 20 used Fords and seven new tractors during March. The showing is one of the most satisfactory ever made and is a considerable improvement over March, 1922. W. D. Stubblefield has joined the sales force here. Stubblefield comes from El Paso, Texas, where for a long time he was connected with the Tri-State Motor Company, Ford distributors. A second salesman is to be added soon. In the stock department, J. Henle has been added and in the office force, Miss Inc. Cratty, of Fullerton. Sales Manager Bacon reports many inquiries for cars. WONDERFUL RECORD MADE BY NEW BUICK Bill Goodrum of the Anaheim Auto Co., isn't advising anybody to drive a new car as fast as the owner can safely make it go, but that's what he did with a Buick touring sedan this week, and his foreman Art Stewart couldn't find any scored cylinders. Finally, Motor West, in its issue of April 1, which reached the city yesterday, devotes a page to the subject under the caption "Appleby's Used Car Sales Plan." Some of the advantages of the plan as stated by the magazine are: "For the public—Opportunity for concentrated comparisons, restored confidence in used car values; more pre-knowledge of what a new car's re-sale value will be when it is a year or two old; elimination of secret allowances, etc., which mean ultimate loss; safety from superficially dolled-up junk." "For dealers—Conversion of used car inventory into bank balance, usable for more business; freedom from competitive riding; reconditioning that helps, not hurts, their makes of cars; more business through higher used car standards; opportunity to have their salesmen free from having to buy while trying to sell." "For bankers—Relief from 75 percent of loans to dealers becoming frozen on account of used car inventory; larger daily balances of dealer depositors, equalling sums previously tied up in inventories; and having to finance only 45 per cent of a 20 days' supply of used cars, on a basis of real value, instead of 100 per cent of an indefinite supply, on a false, competitive valuation." Main Dealer Want Ads Get Results Bill Goodrum of the Anaheim Auto Co., isn't advising anybody to drive a new car as fast as the owner can safely make it go, but that's what he did with a Buick touring sedan this week, and his foreman Art Stewart couldn't find any scored cylinders afterward. Goodrum drove to San Francisco and back, and besides averaging 17 miles to gallon of gas, used only one quart of oil during the entire 1100 or 1200 miles. That was the only time when the hood was even raised. Goodrum made 200 miles in six hours and one half during one lap of his journey. No car, regardless of price, could have performed better than his on such a trip, declares the local Buick distributor. The public is demanding more enclosed car, says Steward. This week William Falkenstein, local merchant, took out a 327 enclosed five-passenger sedan and William Wellman a 47 sedan. Steward again hands out the advice, never threadbare, that car owners who are wise will patronize the service shop which sells the car in question, if they want the quickest and most economical work possible. Allon this week, of the Auto Club of Southern California when asked whether he thought the number or names issued this year would reach the million mark. The highest number received up to the middle of the week was 949,261, but Allen says the main office of the club has received plates numbered over 900,000. Allen figures that California's share of the estimated 8,000,000 new cars sold in the United States will more than make up the 40,000 more numbers required. JUMP BY JUNE 1ST IN TIRES Another jump in tire prices of 20 per cent by June 1 is predicted by F. S. Dunlop, the Anaheim dealer who forecast the previous boosts several weeks before they took effect. This will make a total of 42 1-2 per cent since Jan. 1. Tubes and repair materials as well as casings will be included as before in the advance, says Dunlop. The entire 20 percent will come in a lump the exact date being still uncertain. This information, says Dunlop, is straight from headquarters of the Big Five, in Akron, Ohio. The boost therefore, will apply at first to these leading manufacturers—the United States, Firestone, Goodyear, Goodrich and Kelly-Springfield. The others, however, are expected to follow suit as before. Once the proposed jump gets generally known, in fact, some of the independents may anticipate the standard manufacturers as they did before. It is said that the makers generally were disappointed that the last advance was not larger.
