French Govt. Stops Nude Women Exhibit
BY ALICE LANGLER
(L. N. B. Staff Correspondent)
PARIS, April 6.—The French government, in the interest of public morality, has declared war on the growing practice of exhibiting nude women in theaters.
This crusade was emphasized today when Princess Zalalka, "The Beautiful Rhana," and Harry Pilcer, were arranged for the second time on the charge of taking part in indecent performances in the Pilcer theater.
IM Derval, director of the Follies theater contends that it is porter to exhibit naked women "so long as they are kept at a distance from the audience." In many of the music halls they have been permitted to stroll through the aisles.
"I have aimed to keep beauty and virtue in mind in producing my latest revue 'The Mad Folly', said M. Harval.
Governor “Stays Put” On Budget as Whole
SACRAMENTO, April 6.—Budget increase of $400,000 above the original amount were announced today by Governor Friend W. Richardson.
The governor reiterated that he would keep the expenses of the state within its estimated income of $80,000,000 and "that any attempt to place a direct tax upon the property of the people in the various counties would be resisted."
The governor has made a very successful study of all the suggestions in regard to changes in the budget and will stand firm for the budget as a whole and its general plan and purpose. He wants to treat all the state departments fairly and justly and institute that economy and efficiency must be practiced.

Hitchcock Will Have Face Reconstructed
LOS ANGELES, April 6.—Following the lead of Fanny Ward, Edna Wallace Hopper, and other notables of the stage and screen, Raymond Hitchcock is having his face reconstructed.
This is the first known case of a man, other than one malmed in war or accident, undergoing such treatment. Encouraging the well-known Ponce De Leon, the famous actor's presence in Hollywood, where he is submitting to the ministrations of a facial renovation, was revealed for the first time today. Few, even of his friends, knew he was here.
Hitchcock came here about three weeks ago on the recommendation of the "Manager" of a well-known motion picture actress who herself had submitted to the facial reconstructive process.
"CATCH MY SMOKE"
AT THE FAIRYLAND
"Whoop 'er up! Oh boy! Let 'er buck!"
Yes, this sounds just like daring Tom Mix, whose remarkable picture "Catch My Smoke" opens its premier showing at the Fairyland theater today for a two-day stay.
For the very first time, this Tom Mix feature will be exhibited, even ahead of its tremendous Los Angeles run.
Pew there are nowadays who have not heard of and admired Tom Mix. He is the foremost horseman of the world, and his pictures are always certain to be packed with a whole barrelful of "kick". Not a foot draught in the entire picture.
With a cast of clever players, Mix does his best work in "Catch My Kid"

With a tast of clever players, Mix does his best work in "Catch My Smoke" according to the critics who have viewed the picture at the studio. Lightning speed is registered throughout, and of course there is a bunch of comedy yells which keeps the audiences in an uproar during the entire exhibition.
Owing to the tremendous throngs which will no doubt pack the Fairyland, the management of that theater requests everyone to come early and obtain their choice of seats.
GRIFFITH MYSTERY PICTURE BIG TREAT
Something new—ever the cry in motion piteures—has come with D.W. Griffith's latest film, "One Exciting Night", a United Artists release, which began a 3 day showing at the United Theater yesterday.
Here is a treat. In past years, many an innovation has come to the screen, but this latest handiwork of Griffith is different; it is new; and it is refreshing. Griffith alone seems to have the power of bringing new things; but the public will wonder why this amazing man has neglected mystery so long.
Romance—It trembles with it. And it shakes with laughter. There is a lift of suspense throughout that grows keener and keener. And with the close comes a rush of excitement with quick surprising action that stirs the audience to a tumult.
CHILD MISTREATED
(N.Y., N.W. Staff Correspondent)
NEW YORK, April 6—Showing unmistakable evidence of abuse, Rae LeBowitz, three, last night seen talking with an elderly man in front of her father's store in Brooklyn, was found today locked in a room of a boarding house a few doors from her home.
Cries led to her discovery. A policeman broke down the door.
Physicians said the child had been mistreated and might not recover.
"He was a nice man—he kissed me," the little girl chattered when questioned about her kidnapper.
Charles Chaplin in a scene from "THE KID"
Charlie Chaplin's first venture into the field of feature comedies, "The Kid," will open at the California Theatre for a two-day's showing starting today. Because the story has a strong vein of pathos throughout, the unusual comedy talent which has made Chaplin the most famous funny man in the world stands out stronger and more joyous than in any previous production in which he has appeared.
"The Kid" is a realization of an ambition which the comedian has held for years. He conceived the story when he was first starting on his screen career, but could think of it only as something he would like. Then he made his contract with Associated First National Pictures, Inc., under the policy of that distributing organization of permitting uncontrolled production on the part of stars and producers.
Chaplin whipped his idyl into shape and started work upon the production of the story. It took him a year to complete. There are but five characters of importance in it and are characterized as The Man, The Woman, The Kid, The Tramp and the Policeman. The comedian himself plays the part of the Tramp, while a real find as a juvenile actor. Jackie Coogan, has the title role; and Edna Purviance plays the part of The Woman.
BEN TURPIN RIDES IN SENNETT FILM
"Don't ever say bartle or camel to me again. I might walk a mile for a cigarette or buy my wife an ostrich plume, but that is as near as I ever want to get to either of them again," says Ben Turpin, screen comedian, in telling of his experience in "The Shriek of Araby". Mack Sennett latest burlesque feature coming next Sunday to the United Theater.
"I had to ride them both in." The Shriek of Araby' and I want to say that the ostrich is some riding bird. It scarred the life out of me with its speed and when I was astride it, and then almost broke my neck when it fell.
"The camel is just as slow in its movements as the ostrich is fast, and Oh! Boy! What a feeling when the old camel starts to move with you on its back. You don't have to take an ocean voyage to get sea sick.
