DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS The humblest life which any one of us leads may be what has been expressively denominated "the life of God in the soul." It may hold a self-connection with its infinite source. It may derive an inexpressible sublimity from that connection—Orville Dewey. California should build its highways to endure. Coin your good intentions into the golden mintage of good works. Several months without congress sitting is a rare boon to this country. God pity the nation or people that becomes bankrupt in moral principles! Education should have moral balance. Education without morality is a menace, not a boon. Walk more. Do not let automobiles and street cars deprive you of frequent jaunts afoot, out into the open. The non-voting good citizen plays into the hands of the forces and influences that would corrupt government. There is a vast deal of good in the world—a great deal of unselfish, noble doing for the help and welfare of others. The legislator should be as serupuously careful not to overspend public funds, as he would be not to waste his own money. The Philippine government at Manila, is facing a deficit. How quickly the Filipinos learn to imitate the American people! Judge a community by its homes, its churches and its schools. These are indubitable indices of gentility, refinement and moral stability in community life. Those who are really enjoying life are not the gluttonous and the self-fish, but those who are doing their best. PROTECTION GIVEN TO FARM CREDITS It will be no easy matter to get loans from the Federal Government on farm credits, under the legislation recently enacted by Congress. The Federal Farm Loan Board, which is charged with administering the new government-financed intermediate credit banks, has promulgated rules which indicate that, to obtain money under this system, the farmer must provide adequate security and the funds thus obtained must be for legitimate aid of the farming industry. The government is strongly against making loans for speculative purposes. To the real "dirt" farmer, the reader credits made available under this legislation should be a boon. Pinaheing of crop expansion; purchase of additional farm machinery; meeting the farm payroll; and providing funds for marketing crops, or for tending over while crops are held for better markets; funds for needed betterments in housing and in other ways, on the farm—these are some of the needs that the simpler loan facilities provided by the government will meet. BIG IRRIGATION WORK PLANNED IN MEXICO A gigantic irrigation project in Mexico, in the Guaymas region, providing for a dam across the Yayul River, which would bring more than 1,000,000 acres under cultivation, is to be started soon. The Federal Government at the City of Mexico is appropriating $10,000,000 for the undertaking. This probably will be the forerunner of other great enterprises in Mexico, for the reclaiming of its desert areas. This portends peace, contentment and development in the neighbor republic. It means, in time, immense augmentation of the produced riches of that country. It means, indirectly at least, material advantages for the United States. For American capital will intensify itself... These are indubitable indices of genitality, refinement and moral stability in community life. Those who are really enjoying life are not the gluttonous and the selfish, but those who are doing their best, day after day, to make others happy. Three is no formula on earth which gives more genuine joy than this. Some of these days Ganna Walaka is going to ask him a question and he's going to say, "I'm sorry, but I cannot answer that question at this time." Senator La Follette suggests alcohol as a substitute for gasoline for motor fuel. If the government ever allows the use of alcohol for this purpose, Henry Ford is going to double his sales. We haven't heard, as yet, that the author of the new tune "Dumbell" has dedicated it to anyone. Before deciphering a granite tablet of hierocyphites found near Sonora, Cal., the experts may call it a headache tablet, and let it drop. First sign of spring in Seattle was when a man remarried his divorced wife. The Chicago man who paid $20,000 for one kiss evidently doesn't drive a car. When the Near East gets all the relief it needs, it will be a relief to the whole world. The state administration has found $6,000,000 that it didn't know it had." Better feel in all your vect pockets right now while you're thinking about it. Book Review The new telephone directory is out. It bids fair to be one of the most read books of the season. It has a wealth of character material, but the plot is weak in places. Considerable prominence is given the Smith family. Tom Sims says: Bet the man who invented kissing was surprised at the results. COMMENTS OF THE PRE FINANCIAL SHOWING IS ON (Beketey (Cal.) Gazette) At the beginning of the pre-fiscal year, on July 1, 1923, probable deficit of the treasury end of the year was caught at $658,000,000. To date that mate has been cut to $250,000 and treasury officials believe next June 30 will see the widip of most. If not all, of that sum remarkable showing has been possible through the closest co-operation on the part of every office of the government. The budget can pared the expenditures to a low figure, congress cut the total lower when the general apportionment bills were passed, and the eral executive officers have them one better by saving substantial amounts out of the sums them to spend. In addition, have been large receipts from sale of surplus property, principally tax division of the treasury, speed up the collection of back taxes due to the government, and first two weeks of January they coming in at the rate of more $2,000,000 a day. From every angle, the final showing of the Harding Administration is a most creditable one. Ably never before in the history of the country has the taxpayers' expenditure made to yield so little return in actual value. The fund is shown not only in the tree balances and the steady reduction in national debt, but in innermost confidence and prosperity that the business world. In our for government and in our private ally we are all feeling the benefit of intensive business administration that President Harding and his visers are giving us. Dictionaries are funny, Ours defines the mark as a kind of money. Other things won't get back to normal until national aspirations do. You can't cover Americanism with a hood without knocking it into a cocked hat. To the man who gets no press notices, a clipping bureau seems shear nonsense. She isn't a vamp if he eats onions. You might call it the odor of sanity. It wasn't so hard to keep a husband in the old days when women knew how to keep house. Home is a place where some woman spends her time cleaning up after a man. It is rather refreshing to meet a man who doesn't know how to drive a car, unless he is trying. The economists tell us that over development is dangerous, and this is especially true of the ego. Even the criminal, says a reformer, has inalienable rights. One of which, apparently, is liberty. It isn't that people no longer respect authority, but that there is so little authority to respect. There is too much interest in the balance of power, and too darned little in the balance of budgets. There was considerably less crime in the old days when the prisoner and not the sentence was suspended. The cleverer the book agent, the longer he can stay without letting you know his business. So far the French effort in the Ruhr seems to have done no more than transform pick handlers into panhandlers. OMMENTS OF THE PRESS FINANCIAL SHOWING IS GOOD Befkeley (Cal.) Gasette) the beginning of the present year, on July 1, 1923, the sole deficit of the treasury at end of the year was estimated $4,000,000. To date that estimate has been cut to $250,000,000. Treasury officials believe that June 20 will see the wiping out it, if not all, of that sum. That table showing has been made through the closest co-operation in the part of every official government. The budget burdened the expenditures to a very severe, congress cut the total still when the general appropriations were passed, and the Fed-executive officers have gone one better by saving substantial amounts out of the sums given to spend. In addition, there been large receipts from the surplus property, principally war department. The income vision of the treasury has up the collection of back taxation government, and in the two weeks of January they were in at the rate of more than 800 a day. Every angle, the financial status of the Harding Administration is most creditable one. Probably before in the history of country has the taxpayer dollar closely scrutinized, and its stature made to yield so large a real value. The result is not only in the treasury and the steady reduction of national debt, but in increased life and prosperity throughout world.
