Honesty may be imposed upon and may not gain so much, materially, as selfish dishonesty, but honesty, after all, is "the best policy." It gives a clear conscience and a peace and freedom from worry which are worth more than "much fine gold." STAR CAR SALES DOUBLE IN MONTH James Appleby, of the Appleby Motors Company, is the recipient of a letter of congratulation from the Star factory, because of the position that the Star car has already taken in Orange County, and in commenting on the situation states that doubtedly there would have been a greater number of Star cars delivered had it not been for the fact that the small margin of profit on a Star car would not permit them to accept cars in trade, except at a figure that would have been fair to the owner of a used car. The establishing of the Certified Motor Car Market at South Los Angeles street and Chestnut street, however, has given many a prospective buyer of Star automobiles an opportunity to dispose of their used car at an advantage. Appleby has remarked that since this market has been opened, the sales of Star cars has already nearly doubled, because of the fact that the owners could get a greater amount for their used cars than had been offered in many cases by dealers who sell the lower priced makes of cars, and he is of the firm opinion that the public will have an increasing confidence in the Certified Motor Car Market, as it is not operated for the purpose of profit, but as a public market in every sense, where that portion of the public who have cars to sell can meet that portion of the public who wish to buy a good used car. Chas. P. Hamn, who is the manager, is really the trusted agent of the public, who acts as reference or judge between the buyer and the seller, insuring to the man who has a car, its full value, and to the buyer a satisfactory value for the full sum invented. Hamn has a reputation of being absolutely square and one of the best posted men in Southern California on used car values. The public is to be congratulated on having a man of his character in charge of their market. It is understood that the market will not accept for sale old, obsolete cars that do not represent real value. A great many of such cars, because of a dolled up appearance, or a coat of paint, have been sold in the past, but so far as the market is concerned this type of automobile merchandise must be either junked or sold by other used car dealers who do not have the best interests of the public at heart. Other springs of various makes have furnished no end of trouble. The following in the makers' own words explains the superiority of the Harvey: "The object of the Harvey forming and tempering machine is to give every leaf of the spring exactly the same temper. Each plate is heated to exactly the same point. The plates are then removed one at a time and placed in the machine. The machine does the rest. It shapes the plates to the exact form required. Instantly on completing this operation, it automatically trips and plunges the whole in oil. This entire operation takes but about eight seconds from the fire to the tempering oil. This operation often takes a minute and a half in the old way. The maze is firmly held in the forms while it is tempered. It has no chance to lose its shape during the tempering process." Farmers and others have "blocs." Why not a "blog" for consumers? They are longsuffering and heaven knows they need protection and championing.
