BASEBALL WEATHER ONLY NEEDED FOR BIG CROWD SUNDAY With good weather on tap honor-row, the biggest crowd of fans that ever witnessed a baseball game in Orange-co is expected for the So. Cal. semi-pro championship when Anaheim Merchants, the money-grabber-in the Double-A Winter League, clash with the great Standard Oil aggrievement of Huntington Beach, title-hole-of the Triple A league, after a grueling three-game series with Sawtell. Manager Billy Knott is making every effort to plug up the hole at second where Doty Bush's scampering feet and enveloping mitts will be missing. Disappointed in his inability to get hold of Johnny Butler, Manager Knott today was making efforts to get Cunningham, a whist from last circuit, the Western League, which produces such stars as Jimmy McDowell, who only got five hits out of five times up, three of them homers, in the last game here. All the rest of Anaheim lineup will be on the job with Captain Butler Callan behind the bat, Hughes on the slab, Rumage at first, Johnny Pendleton at short, McDowell at third, Glenn Callar, Vie Ruedy and Ray Burh in the field. Manager Knott has received a copy of the Pasadena Elks Bulletin containing the following: The Elks Baseball team who have been playing a good brand of ball during the winter season in the "A.A." league rounded up with Anaheim Elks for first place. Whenever these two teams are entered in a league the result seems almost a foregone conclusion. Time and time again these ball teams have met in the finals but with disastrous results for 672, as they sure have the flax-on it. In the play-off at Anaheim last month we were defeated in the usual way. No use for an alibi, brothers. That Anaheim bunch have a gang of good ball players that are hard to exchange for Para Belts and Apex or WHITTIER MIDGETS TRIM INGLEWOOD Whittier High's highly tuned 130-pound quintet yesterday defeated the Inglewood High lightweights in a semi-final game for the Southern California lightweight championship on the U.S.C. pavilion floor, 14 to 8. The Quakers had the edge of the playing on the Chicken Hawks through the contest. FULLERTON WINNER IN PLAY OFF TILT Fullerton High's powerful basketball quintet defeated the Sweetwater Union five of National City, 34 to 8, in a Southern California basketball championship play-off game at Fullerton yesterday. The local team meets Chino in the semi-finals for the Southren California title next Friday. Altho the Sweetwater Union players tried hard; they were completely outclassed by the Fullerton five. Bill's Cafe catching the Keen Hat Store on an off night, now three easy games and the Silver Moon Cafe took the same from O'Donnell's Victor Cords when "Stormy" Gordon had his worst night of the season. Capt. Karam, shooting his new ball, rolled three 200-scores and hung up a new mark for the "aces," totaling 633. O'Donnell shot a nice series for his team, while Larrison shot the best for Bill's Cafe. Sunday night the biggest bowling event of the present series will take place on the local alleys when ten of Anaheim's best shooters take the drives in a ten-game match for a purse of $100. The alloys have been refinished and new pins will be used. The following ars expected to start: Gordon Karam, Efker, Hansen, Heffron, McGaugh, Varner, O'Donnell, Koehler and Gordella. Geo. Appleby, president of the Orange County Motor Car Dealers' Association and Durant, Star and Peerless distributor, got a wire yesterday morning at about $30 that the dealers in Santa Barbara wanted him to come down last night and explain to them the operation of the Orange County Certified Motor Car Market. He agreed on the spot and at once arranged to take his family and motor down. The association hopes shortly to increase the number of dealers who will drop the handling of need cars, as soon as their supply is exhausted, and turn over this business to the market. The dealer merely can recommend the market to the prospect. 75 P.C.OF ESSEX CARS CLOSED MODELS That there is strength as well as beauty in the Essex Coach top was proved recently when five young ladies, weighing an average of 110 pounds each, posed for a picture while enjoying the scenery from the elevated position afforded by one of these cars. The framework of the coach is constructed of the finest selected hard wood, and braced so as to give maximum support with minimum weight. Metal panels are of 20 gauge automobile body steel, stamped from one piece. A notable feature of the coach is the absence of "rumple" that is so annoying in many types of closed cars. This is entirely eliminated by the Essex factory engineers in the scientific design and constructed of the body. Popular demand for a closed car at a moderate price has resulted in a volume of production for 1923 that has been previously unequalled. Seventy-five per cent of the entire Essex factory production is being devoted to closed cars. GLARING HEADLIGHT QUESTION UP AGAIN Interest in radio is spreading in Anaheim, says A. Bevillard, who points to the sale of sets of these men as evidence; J. P. O'Brien, J. M. McDuell, O. M. Skinner, Vic LaMont and Charles Carroll, Kennedy sets; James E. Applaby and L. R. Wilson of Wilson & Bever, DeForest sets. Bevillard has a lot of prospects interested in wireless. The latest stunt is to install a set in a graphophone, which doesn't prevent the playing of records and saves the cost of a magnavox, which adds materially to the aggregate. Put into a handome phonograph, the attractions of a wireless performance are greater than ever. Free Norwalk Tube With Every Casing Continuing his offer of a free Norwalk tube with every Norwalk casing, F. S. Dunlap of the Nu-Way Tire Company is arousing a lot of interest in the products of this, perhaps the oldest rubber company of consequence in the country. Dunlap will permit a Norwalk tire owner to exchange his used tires on new ones, or he will sell used tires, re-treaded if necessary, outright. The Norwalk, Dunlap points out, is one of the very few tubes on the market made of pure rubber, and the casing also is practically pure rubber. The Norwalk originated the cord tire, and made the first Silvertown cord a name famous from coast to coast and guilt to Canada. Dunlap, who foresaw the price advance on tires, tubes and repair materials long before it came, warns the public that present prices may not hold good much longer, if cotton and rubber continues to go up. AUTO CHIEFS LAUD CERTIFIED MARKET (Continued from Page I) car industry in any of its various departments would react to the benefit of the public. UNFOLD SECRET OF AGES IN NEW ROLE Do you know "How Women Love?" Well, if you don't (and it's likely enough that you don't even, if you think you do), go to the United Theater tomorrow and see Betty Blythe in her latest starring vehicle. It may help you, because it's called "How Women Love." Adam, Solomon, Antony, Henry VIII and other famous men in history had a great deal of trouble and worse than trouble, trying to find the answer to this difficult question of woman's affection. Adam lost Paradise, Solomon lost his wits, Antony his life, and Henry VIII—well, his reputation, without solving the great secret. Now, however, the truth may be known. Why not? We live in wonderful times. In an age which can talk aerospace, fly in the air, and go down under the sea, it is just possible that we may begin to understand woman—how, why, and when they love, and how, when and why they fool us. Certainly it would take a wonderful age to discover all that! But here it is, and here is "How Women Love." GLARING HEADLIGHT QUESTION UP AGAIN Commenting on the plan proposed in Los Angeles to enforce the law against glaring headlights West Bros. says it "seems to be the only way." The plan was suggested by Captain Cannon, head of the 18 men in the motorcycle squad, and by if the offender is handed a filled-in order directing him to have his headlights adjusted in three days or be soothed with a bench warrant and prosecuted. "When the actual expense is considered it is cheaper by far to keep one's lights in focus than to take advantage of the necessity for cash to buy his used car at one-half its value and then with a quick coat of paint resell it above its value. On both sides the public are the loser. The plan adopted by our Orange County Markets protected both the buyer and seller of used cars and will stabilize values on a commodity of widespread use. This will tend to create more confidence in the industry and to that extent the motor car dealers themselves will profit. "We believe that your plan will be universally used in the near future, for it solves a very vexious problem for the public and also for you men as motor car merchants." Standard Equipment Sixty-two makes of motor car now use the USL battery as standard equipment, George Eennis of the Automotive Electric Company declares. Ennis is exclusive distributor in Anaheim and vicinity. These cars include the Chalmers and Maxwell, Star, Flat, Overland, Willys Knight, Earl, Columbia, Dort, Stephens, Durant, Princeton and Stephenson-Duryea. This year five USL customers will build 700,000 cars, each of which will carry a USL battery. The unusually favorable service policy under which the USL stations operate is one of the attractive attractions in purchasing a USL battery, says Eennis. Liberal trade discounts now are being given on new USL batteries and battery repair work. Irvin to Re-Charge Batteries Hereafter Hereafter Irvin's Garage will do its own battery charging. Irvin this week put in a Tungar rectifier or battery-charger capable of charging 60 batteries at one time. A car owner need not have his battery sent elsewhere when he brings his pachine in for a general over-heating. The rectifier was put into operation this week. Irvin recently installed a washrack capable of accommodating three cars at one time. He also had a vacuum cleaner especially adapted for cleaning the cloth upholstery of cars. STANDARD DODGE SEDAN MAKES HIT Charley Mann is displaying a standard Dodge sedan on his floor. It's as fine a machine as the commercial sedan, except for the full Spanish leather upholstery. It has five disc wheels, the rear seat and framework is removable and the front seat can be raised to admit luggage, the same as the commercial sedan. Beauty and substantiality are wonderfully combined in it. Recent sales of Dodge cars include: Sedan to P. R. Nicholson, screen commercial car to K. Okamoto and coupes to Roy Medlin and G. J. Carney. New Chalmers Car Wins Favor Here Turton & Lumsdon on Wednesday received a carload of Maxwells, comprising five touring sports. Also the firm of the new Chalmers touring cars. The latter has five disc wheels, real leather upholstery. Auto-Lite system, monogram lenses, one-piece windshield with wiper. Stromberg carburetor especially built for the Chalmers and various other features. The firm hasn't been getting many Chalmers cars, and now is obtaining all it can, as it is of the Maxwell, while they are available. The Chalmers, while made by the same manufacturers, is a distinctive machine with features all its own, the firm points out. Tire Special NEW FIRSTS 30x3½ Cords ... $10.50 32x4 Cords ... $28.00 U. S.
