XXVI—NO. 162 CAR MARKET HAS A GOOD 1ST WEEK Car sales of many dealers have diminished somewhat with the establishment of the Certified Motor Car Market, but sales have been sales and not trade-ins. Dealers, that is, have gotten the cash and have not had to keep funds tied up. The market has sold a dozen cars this week, according to Manager C. P. Hamm. The Fullerton market, the third of the three in the county, will be started very shortly, says Hamm. This market and the ones at Santa Ana and Anaheim are each standing on their own legs, but were started by the county used car association of dealers. Hamm is taking in only cars that are or may be put into satisfactory condition. "I turned down four cars today," said Hamm on Thursday "because our policy is to sell only cars which our judgment can back." Altho the market is financed by a limited number of dealers, anybody can bring a car there and sell it if it is of fairly good quality. If he does sell it, he can get 50 percent of the purchase price at once. The market is conservatively managed, that is, it can take no risks of not keeping its stock moving, and the buyer gets the benefit, says Hamm. EDDY SHOP ENJOYS ANOTHER BUSY WEEK Sales of two California tops to Harry D. Riley and one to the Bowles Motor Co. of Santa Ana, and of four paint jobs to the former and three to the latter are among the contracts filled this week by Eddy's Paint and Top Shop. Eddy is getting work from many points in So. Calif., besides Anaheim and Santa Ana. Equipped to turn out practically any type of top usd, leading dealers are finding him a valuable ally. MILLIONTH BUICK TO APPEAR MARCH 1 Word has just been received at the local Buick branch that a millionth Buick motor has just been built at the Buick Motor Company's plant in Flint, Mich. Building a million automobiles something no other concern has yet accomplished with the exception of Ford, and by March 1, this millionth motor will be placed in the millionth Buick car, a record which the manufacturers of the famous valve-in-head motor car may well feel proud. Arriving in the twentieth anniversary year of Buick the millionth Buick automobile is a most noteworthy achievement. In 1903 the Buick Motor Company was organized and its production in that year was only sixteen automobiles. Now it is building more than American plants alone. It does not detract in the least from the marvelous accomplishment of Ford to say that the Buick Hamm is taking in only cars that are or may be put into satisfactory condition. RANCHER PREFERS MAC-DRY BATTERY Harry Gifford, rancher west of the city on Broadway, is one of the more recent purchasers of the Mac-Dry battery, says B. F. Herr, local distributor. Gifford has tried many makes of battery, but never has bene as well satisfied as now. He bought it because of the excellent service obtained by his father, an Angeleno, from one of them. That was about a year ago, the older Gifford has never regretted the purchase. The Mac-Dry battery is guaranteed for three years. On it the same free service as on all other makes are furnished by the batter. Herr can furnish of 250 to 300 purchasers in Dugge County who have bought the Mac-Dry from his place alone. For years Ford has been standardizing on quantity production of a single chassis and but five body models, while Buick has built a diverse line. At present, for instance, the Buick models include fifteen passenger cars and a light delivery truck. Again, the Buick prices range from slightly in excess of one thousand dollars to twenty-five hundred dollars for delivery on the Pacific Coast, and therefore cover a price range that demands scrupulous care and inspection in production. This involves quite a different manufacturing proposition from that of a single chassis and limited mody models unchanged over a period of years. Charles S. Howard, head of the Howard Automobile Co., the Pacific Coast distributor of Buick cars, has been a big factor. In the sale of those million Buicks, as he is known at the world. AUTO TRADES TO DEBATE NEW ACTS The Northern Division of the State Auto Trade Assn will meet at Oakland on Monday and Tuesday, and a lively session is expected, with members of the southern division present in numbers. Various new acts affecting motor vehicles have been introduced at the present session of the state legislature, and not all of these have met the fancy of the trade. The legislative committee will present its report and the action taken on its findings will determine the attitude of the trade to a large extent. Already there is a sharp fight between the proponents and opponents of the proposed tax of two cents per gallon on gasoline. The heavy vehicles are hit by this tax considerably more than the light pleasure cars. Walter Faweett, vice president of the association and legislative representative, will take an active part in the debates. RACES LOS ANGELES, Feb. 24.—Tomor row the 183-cubic inch speed carls will sing their "swan song" at the Los Angeles Speedway, for indications point to the displacement of this size of racing motor in favor of the smaller 122-cubic inch models in all future events during 1923. But before they are ended more world's records are expected to be broken. The 183-inch cars have now been performing since the spring of 1920 and have shown a wonderful development in the way of speed. Their first appearance here in Los Angeles in the fall of 1920 resulted in the running of a 250-mile race on the Deverly course at an average speed of 103.2 miles an hour. From that day on the average speed has been climbing and in the final race of the 1922 season, also held on the Los Angeles bowl, the average was 114.6 for the distance, a new world's record for speedway racing. Since that memorable event in December the cars have all been tuned and thoroughly overhauled and experts are confident that the finish of Sunday's event will witness the establishment of another world's record with an average higher than 115 miles an hour. The entry list for Sunday's big race is perhaps the most wonderful assembly of sped pilots ever gathered together on the Coast.
