DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS Grant me new faith and courage for the morrow; Let me not shrink from any unknown way; And from Thy loving promise, let me borrow New strength and blessing for the unfried day—Neil Leslie. Hunting Pharaoh mummies is becoming a rare pastime in Egypt. These little incidents are but paragraphs in history. Caesar once occupied the Ruhr. After all, it's better to be alive and healthy day laborer than a mum-fled Pharaoh. Grand opera is a grand bore to many who, for form's sake rave over it with flattering adjectives. They are photographing sound. The small boy's wall when he can't go play must look decidedly blue on the film. One of the best ways to appreciate California properly is to become thoroughly conversant with the salient facts about this state. Knowledge of its greatness in varied things gives ground for pride and exultation. Cleaner methods and higher standards in journalism are becoming more common. The unquestionably is in response to the demand of the people for a better grade of journalism than that given by the safron press. Party leaders are shaping issues and considering candidacies for the 1924 Presidential campaign. Politicians plan and scheme, but the people no longer are programmed in politics. The ear of independent voting is at hand. Make tourists feel welcome here. The hearty hand of hospitality should be extended them. Strangers PUT UNIFORMITY INTO TRAFFIC RULES Traffic perils are here, and here to stay, and to grow more aggravated as the number of machines and vehicles on public thoroughfares increases. The dangers and hazards are not confined alone to the large centers of population. The smaller cities and towns, and even rural roadways, are confronted with the menace. Consideration of traffic problems; therefore, directly concerns every locality. In working out solutions to the problem, particular attention should be given to permency of regulation, and also to uniformity. Municipalities should co-operate in establishing identical rules and requirements; in making speed limits uniform; and also in establishing uniform and rigorous penalties for violations of traffic ordinances. It would be better from the standpoint of those who enforce laws, to have this uniformity. And it would make conditions simpler for and more readily understood by conscientious autoists who desire to obey laws and ordinances. BE MERCIFUL TO SPEECH EMPLOYED Some men and women are quite humans and considerate toward those persons whom they employ. And yet as employers in another direction, they are cruel and merciless. They employ the graceful, beautiful, refined, felicitous Mother Tongue—a gracious and benignant mater—and treat the good mother outrageously. They be-labor her with slang. They pelt her with jazzy caligurities. They min-use her personal pronouns, heartlessly split up her infinites, bewilderingly muss up her tenses, and atrociously abuse her moods. They divorce her verb from her nouns, and use her adjectives adverbially, and her adverbe adjectively. They work her superlatives overtime. A week is dedicate to "Better English." Carefully, prayerfully, this week should be observed by those Party leaders are shaping issues and considering candidacies for the 1924 Presidential campaign. Politicians plan and scheme, but the people no longer are programmed in politics. The ear of independent voting is at hand. Make tourists feel welcome here. The hearty hand of hospitality should be extended them. Strangers should be greeted with sincere courtey and consideration. A reputation for cordiality and hospitality is worth a vast deal to this state. California's growth and development are steady and healthy. This state moves forward with sturdy strides, not spectacularly, but surely and substantially. There is that about this state's progress which is convincing and which inspires confidence. You can say one thing for Bol-shevism. It does away with the annoyance of hunting. A few politicians think they are public servants; but most of them think they are public opion. It is easier for nations to get together if they don't live too close together. Only a few men in America have the true look of greatness, and most of them are traffic copes. No wonder the Turk eschews liquor. He doesn't need it. He is born that way. You can estimate the length of time the wife has been away by the number of sardine cans on the kitchen cabinet. The radio eliminates distance. But it still is too imperfect to eliminate platitudes from the speeches. If Sir Oliver Lodge isn't busy, he might page Bismarck and get an interesting opinion of the French policy. Some races are superior, of course, but it isn't probable that any one tongue is spoken exclusively in hell. Nations are unlucky, at that. When a collector appears, they can't send the children to say they are not in. Some sayings just naturally suggest fiction. For instance, "pieces of eight," and "Christian nations."
