RECORD MAY BE BROKEN IN L.A.
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 17. — Trials under way promise new records when the conclave of speed artists gather before the starting flag for 1923's opening motor race, teh 250-mile event scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 25.
An all star cast: the cream of America's racing talent and the greatest collection of real stars of the motor pastime that the fans have ever been treated to have signed entry blanks and are busy keeping the mile and a quarter board speed-way here bilatering hot with terrific bursts of speed.
Jimmy Murphy's record for the distance is threatened. Everybody is out to set that mark up higher, for this is to be the last of the 183's in Southern California. With all of the characteristics of a grand finale, the speed kings will treat a record breaking crowd to rare sport in the drill of speed. The passing of the larger motor cars will probably mean the passing of the terrible bursts of speed; for the 183 cubic-inch motors have developed greater NO LEAKING OIL FROM NEW PACKARD
Leaking of oil from the differential housing in the rear axle, a disagreeable feature that has bothered motor car drivers since the first automobile was built has been eliminated by a change in design of the rear axle of the Packard single-six, although the change itself is so simple motorists might well wonder why it never had been thought of before says C. W. Cromer, local branch manager of Dale Co.
This leaking, which is from several different causes, allows oil to get on the brakes and the rear tires. Often the oil is thrown out by centrifugal force when the car is rounding corners, or flows by gravity when driving on a heavily crowned road and often is forced out by expansion as the result of the oil being warmed by friction of gears and bearings.
Ordinarily a series of felt washers is pressed over the shaft, and although while these are new they are effective, they depreciate rapidly and must be replaced. In the new Packard rear axle, regular gland or stuffing box construction is used, permitting an adjustment being made in a few minutes, the packing being compressed around the shaft in the same manner as is done on the conventional water pump shaft. This holds the oil and permits of an adjustment being made in a few minutes.

FITTING UP OFFICE
Roy Mendoza, in the intervals between selling tires and advising patrons on their income tax returns, is erecting some fetchy compartments in the front part of his new quarters on South Los Angeles street. Hereafter he and Tom Sutton, his partner in the Reliable Tire Co., will have something approaching private offices.
The Paru-Bell and Apex tires, of which the firm has the exclusive distribution here, continue to sell well. An extensive servicing business also is being done.
and faster records than have ever been known to competitive racing.
Rario Resta, in his first trials, has handled his car like a veteran, and in a manner that indicates he will be a dangerous contender for victory. The fame have not forgotten Resta here. His career on the Pacific Coast in 1915 and 1916 when he was speedway champion, will leave him forever in the motoring Hall of Fame.
His practice sprints have proved he can come back, but his teammate, Murphy, as well as others on the Durant team, are out to win over him; and he has dangerous competition in Tommy Milton, Benny Hill, Ralph DePalma, as well as a group of other entrants.

RADIO FAN HERE
“GETS” HONOLULU
Most radio fans don't know that the elaborate aerial rigged above the house now may be dispensed with entirely. A Bevillard, local distributor, is showing at the Anaheim Ignition Depot on South Los Angeles-st, a De Forest set, the "aserial" of which consists of a fan-shaped contrivance about a foot square suspended above the machine. This set, which sells at a very moderate price, was placed in the heavy vault of a well known banking house in Los Angeles, the magnavox attached, San Francisco connected up and a message received so loud as to be uncomfortable.
The past week Bevillard installed a Kennedy universal receiver, said to be the only one between Los Angeles and San Diego, and already has caught code messages between Honolulu and Tokyo. He can tune in on any message from any station on earth. Expensive at the outset, this set costs almost nothing in upkeep, because it has devices which recharge the batteries, loud speakers, etc.
local Speed Limits
Legal on All Bridges
How fast can motorists travel over bridges in the state or California? Have you ever had any trouble with bridge speed regulations, asks the Automobile Club of Southern California.
If so, you will be interested to know that there has been a change in speed regulations over bridges thruout California. No longer can arbitrary speed limits be specified on bridges or anything that looks like bridges by any body of people other than the law as contained in the State Motor Vehicle Act.
This law says that the speed of automobiles over bridges should be governed by the speed limit in the district where the bridge is located. That is, if the bridge is in a 30 mile speed limit on a county road or state highway, the speed over that bridge will be the same as it is on the highway. If the speed limit on the high-way where the bridge is located is 15 miles an hour, as provided in the State Motor Vehicle Act in congested districts and certain localities, then you must not go over 15 miles an hour over the bridge.
ONLY ONE ROAD TO MEXICO CITY NOW
General road conditions throut out the West for motorists have just been reported upon by the touring bureau of the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Hundreds of inquiries have been received at the club offices in regard to condition of highways leading to Mexico City and various points in Mexico from the United States. And the touring bureau quotes a report submitted by the American consulate at Guymas which says that it is not possible to reach Mexico City by automobile from any point along the border of Southern California, Arizona or New Mexico. It is possible, however, to drive to Mexico City by entering Mexico at Laredo, Texas. The trip over that route is not an inviting one, especially to those who are not familiar with the country. Taken as a whole the report, which is on file at auto club office, shows that Mexican roads at present are nothing to boast about.
The bulk of transcontinental travel coming to California over the National Old Trail road is favoring the extreme southern route via Tucson, Lorisburg and Deming to Mesilla Park, thence north via Socorro thru Albuquerque. The roads will be passable between Albuquerque and Denver to Kansas the balance of the winter between storms. No trouble should be encountered in traveling over the Raton Pass as the road has been recently improved.
"I Want Milk"
BEAR DRY BATTERY AGENCY HERE NOW
W. E. Altnow has bought out his junior partner, V. W. Baden, in the Independent Battery Station and is going it alone. The new building, with its wash rack recently installed, is one of the most convenient and best shipped in the country.
Altnow has taken on the Bear dry battery, guaranteed for two years. Here is a battery which, according to Altnow, rarely needs recharging, provided the owner sees that it is properly serviced. It is guaranteed for two years—really guaranteed.
The photo is hand-pasted, the battery contains a special electrolyte and, with internal resistance eliminated, the Bear dry will deliver twice the amount of power in the same space of time as the wet type. The spark is produced hotter, the light provided in brighter and the starting power is more reliable.
It costs a little more, but the value more than makes up for it, says Altnow.

showrooms of dealers throughout the
south. Bob White, local Nash and
Franklin distributor, has received a
touring car with Franklin written all over it.
The hood is higher and more pronounced than ever, giving an extraordinary exposure to prevent engine
overheating. The car is one of the
largest ever put out by the company,

some. Never has the company constructed a car which was so commadious and easy to enter.
All of the seven new bodies have lower top lines, and increased length and greater width above the body tail. From the almost vertical grille to the fashionable flare of the cowl, the lines are the cleanest of the clean.
Both the driver's compartment and the tonneau have more room than ever. The seats also have been low-ered and tilt at a more restful angle.
Six of the seven new bodies will be for enclosed cars—sedan, brougham, touring-limousine, demi-sedan, coupe and four-door sedan.
The slot machines are legal because they vend chewing gum, the proprietors argue.
POOLED USED CAR MARKET OPENS
With room for 150 cars at one time, Anaheim’s Orange County Certified Motor Car Market officially opened today at Chestnut and South Los Angeles streets. Similar markets are planned for Fullerton and Santa Ana.
The location chosen is as convenent as any in the city. It is central—only a block from Center and Los Angeles; it has an ample covered space for cars too good to be exposed to the elements—room for 65 cars; and it has been fixed up attractively.
C. P. Hamm, who is in charge,
comes here from the Howard Automobile Company, Los Angeles, where he was assistant manager of one of the used car departments. Hamm has been in California continually since 1913, connected with the Chevrolet factory, the Durant interests etc. At the outset at least he will be head salesman among other things. H. C.
