BEAR LAYS DOWN IN MATCH AT SANTA FE
By Sergum Sprout
John Brown the wrestling bear struck in his exhibition at Santa Fe Springs last night. Herman Stroh injured a hand in training and was unable to go on with the bear so Romonoff was substituted. John Brown went good for about five minutes and then just walked off the mat and no amount of persuasion could entice him back.
The two boxing contests made up for the wrestling flipper. The Masked Marvel and Young Lee put on a whale of a battle in the main event which went to a draw. There was a good attendance.
Ted Thye the Portland middle-weight wrestler had an easy time in beating Tony Ajoz at the Los Angeles Athletic club last night. Ted in line for matches with Myers Sandow and Miller. Ted has defeated Meyers and is of the opinion that he can do it again.
Ted Thye weighs 163 pounds or about eight pounds less than Roy Mahee, but Ted is one of the best men of his weight in the game today. A match between he and Roy Mabee would be about the best ever. We'll bet our hat that a go between the two would play to a sold out house in Anaheim. Don't get the idea that Roy would be picking easy money. Thye has wonderful speed and wrestling knowledge. Roy shows better with those not quite so speedy as himself. His two showings against Santel were sensational as Roy had the edge on speed. Roy appeared to be working harder with Perganfos than he did with Santel. Pergantos was just as fast as Roy but has not the strength of Santel. Any way we would go a long way to see a tangle between Thye and Roy.
Roland Todd regained the middle-weight championship of Europe by defeating Ted Lewis in London last night. Todd is coming over to this country and take our middleweight champ, Johnny Wilson, into camp mabee.
Sunday will see another elash between those ancient enemies, Pasadena Merchants and our local merchants. They have staged several battles here before under the Elk banner. This battle is for the class A championship. Manager Ury of Major General Allen, commanding officer of doughboys in company with M. Tirard, French entrained for home.
WHITTIER NO. 1 AND KEEN HAT WINNERS
Whittier No. 1 and the Keen Hat Store teams were the winners in the City Rowling League last night, the former taking two from the Silver Moon Cafe and the latter the same number from the Fanning Candy Co. The latter team showed considerable improvement and with their new line-up should give the leaders plenty of trouble.
Theodore shot high score of the night with 211 and Holmes the best total 546. Tonight Whittier No. 2 vs O'Donnell's Victor Cords. Baby Dolls vs Bill's Cafe.

Sunday will see another elash between those ancient enemies, Pasadena Merchants and our local merchants. They have staged several battles here before under the Elk banner. This battle is for the class A championship. Manager Ury of Pasadena would be happy if he could defeat Anaheim just once in a deciding contest. Manager Billy Knot says that there is nothing doing and that Mr. Ury will have to continue through life unhappy if his happiness depends on Pasadena defeating Anaheim. Anyway its going to be a great game. Anaheim has the edge on ability but you never can tell in a one game match of baseball.

CHANEY MAY MAKE HIT LIKE DUDLEY
Young Dudley, who learned the first steps in the art of flat slinging in the local arena has reached that stage of perfection that he can engage the best man of his weight on the Pacific coast. Dudley was a good fighter but the fans here looked on him as a ham-and-egger. Since going north, he has been a sensation and around Frisco. The Anaheim fans did not realize how good he really was.
Joe Chaney is in the same boat. Joe has never displayed to local fans the hitting power that Dudley did but Joe is a more finished boxer. That left of Joe's is no gentle mossner. Down in San Diego it developed a knockout kick.
A few months hence, if Joe gets to go in the big towns, Anaheim fans are liable to wake up to the fact that they harbored one of the best men in the boxing game for long months. Joe is good and if he comes back with that knock-out punch he will be a greater sensation than Dudley.
Another champion tried a come-back tonight when Pancho Villa up set Frankie Mason. Mason held the flyweight title one time and thought he could knock the Filipino champ of the privileged roost. Mason lasted five rounds and went down and out. History repeats itself, one come-back after another fails.
Johnny Meyers, the middle weight claimant of wrestling honors is having the time of his young life out in the west. First, Sam Sandow of Long Beach held him to a two hour draw and now comes the news that he just barely scratched out a winner in a 12 round go with Mike Yokel in Salt Lake.
Ad Santel says that Johnny's famous stopper hold is nothing new, and pointed out that Roy Mabec used it against Pergantos at Riverside the other evening. Mabec did not break any bones with it, neither did he throw Pergantos with it. With the proper bar, it is just as painful as the toe hold, but like all other holds is hard to secure on a good wrestler.

LARGEST RADIO STATION IN S. AFRICA
CAPETOWN, S. A Feb. 16—South Africa plans to have the largest radio station in the world.
The government has accepted the scheme put forward by the English Marconi Company and it only remains for the sanction of the union parliament to be given for work to be begun at once. South Africa will then take its place in the great imperial radio chain that is being linked around the British empire.
The engineer in charge of the construction of the station arrived in Capetown in December. He said that he was satisfied from the reports of experts who had previously examined many prospective sites throughout South Africa that the possibilities for long-range radio at the Cape were unlimited. The vicinity of Capetown as a site had been thoroughly examined and reported upon favorably.
In addition to the consideration of the city's geographical advantages, exhaustive experiments were made with the wave lengths of American and European stations, and the results of these indicated that Capetown was the best site for reception.
OBSERVATORY SEES UNUSUAL COMET
HARVARD COLLEGE OBSERVATORY, Cambridge, Mass., Feb. 15—A comet's tail 1,000,000 miles in length, pointing toward the sun instead of in the customary opposite direction, is a remarkable phenomenon revealed by observations made at the Yerkes Observatory of a comet now far outside the earth's orbit. This is a peculiar and uncommon circumstance for which science at present can offer no very satisfactory explanation.
The object that exhibits this peculiar tail is called Baade's comet, because of its discovery by Dr. Walter Baade of the Bergedorf Observatory, near Hamburg, Germany, in October, 1922. It is one of three faint comets visible telescopically in the sky at present, and in addition to its extraordinary tail, it is of interest in that this is its first visit to the neighborhood of the sun, while terrestrial in that this is its first visit to have been former visitors.
Ad Santel says that Johnny's famous stopper hold is nothing new, and pointed out that Roy Mabe used against Pergantos at Riverside the other evening. Mabe did not break any bones with it, neither did he throw Pergantos with it. With the proper bar, it is just as painful as the toe hold, but like all other holds is hard to secure on a good wrestler.
RAIL SIGNALMEN DENIED WAGE RAISE
CHICAGO, Feb. 15—Railway signalmen of America, 15,000 in number, are denied a wage increase in a decision made public by the United State Railroad Labor Board, but they are granted the eight-hour day.
There was speculation today as to whether restoration of the eight-hour day to the signalman will be regarded as a precedent from which the maintenance of way men and clerks and freight handlers will benefit.
WINE
Fifty thousand bottles of Chinese wine, seized in New York City by prohibition raiders, are taken out to sea and sunk. The sad sea waves must have had a joyful moment.
This Chinese wine, known as Ng K' Pi or yellow bark brandy, is distilled from wormwood. It is a first cousin of absinthe, and about four times as powerful as the strongest whiskey.
Cellar chemists long since discover vegetable kingdom can be converted into alcohol, but wormwood is a new one to most of them. The ease with which alcohol can be filched from bountine nature is the most difficult of the many prohibition problems.

Morse and son of Fullerton,is scheduled to sail from Bombayfor Egypt on Monday. This would bring the Fullerton folks toEgypt sometime next week, possiblyin time to see the mummy ofPharaoh.
The opening of the tomb of KingTut-Ankh-Amen is considered one ofthe important events in world history.Pharaoh is the term applied toall the kings of Egypt which ruledthat nation for more than 15 centuriesuntil the overthrow of Egyptby the Babylonians and later bythe Persians, and was derived fromthe native legend that Menes, the firstking, was the off-spring of Phra, orRa, the sun-god. The Book of TheDead represents Ra as voyaging uponthe geart flood of waters, and thusMenes is identified with Mizraim, son of Ham, whose father was in theark with Noalt.
