THE ORANGE
E. SCHUMACHER CO.
OPENS LARGE REAL
ESTATE QUARTERS
Anaheim's phenomenal growth is indicated by the opening of the largest and most completely equipped reality firm in the county, headed by J. E. Schumaker.
This company will handle everything in real estate. The office, which is located at 212 W. Center street is furnished throughout in mahogany and consists of nine divisions. Departmental organization is such as to afford completeness of service and efficiency. "Everything in Real Estate" ought to be the slogan of the company as it has a separate and distinct department for everything in the reality line. The departments are: House and Lot Department., Grove Dept., Ranch Dept., Northern Land Dept., Business Property and Business Dept., Northern and Eastern Property Exchange Dept., Loan and Insurance Dept., Rental and Collection Dept. Each department will be headed by a specialist in that particular branch.
Mr. Schumaker will be general manager; Mr. W. C. Carle, assistant manager; Mr. R. E. Sargent, late of Providence, R. I., secretary.
Mr. Schumaker is widely known here where he has spent 20 years here. He has had vast experience with groves and ranches in Orange and Kern Counties, in each of which he has large holdings. He organized the So. Cal. Fence Construction Co., now the greatest fencing concern in California. Later he was manager of the Anaheim Truck & Transfer Co., for a period. About one year ago he started the J. E. Schumaker Hay & Grain Co., for the purpose of selling the products of his San Joaquin Valley holdings.
Now, as he is about to subdivide his northern lands into small ranches and sell them, he will dispose of his hay and grain business and confine his activities and attention to real estate. Mr. Schumacher has been successful in everything he has undertaken. He is very versatile, and a man of the utmost intergrity who has done much

KEEN HAT STORE
ALREADY ENLARGED
Nothing more definitely shows the growth of a town than necessarily enlarging its stores. The Keen Hat Store, 175 West Center, which is doing a larger business than anticipated three months ago when opened, is adding 15 feet floor space, installing four large clothing sections and two three-foot, full length mirrors that customers may see exactly how the garment looks to the other person.
We respectfully suggest to the legislature that a tax on bandits would raise more revenue than a tax on gasoline.
How To Figure Depreciation On Inco
By Rex. B. Goddcell
Collector of Internal Revenue
Depreciation is that inevitable lesening in value which is inherent in any building, machine, or other fixed asset used in a business.
It makes no difference how thorou and complete the repairs and replacements may be, the fact remains that the value and efficiency of such assets are gradually diminishing. Depreciation is caused by actual use in which tends to wear out. If a building or machine is allowed to remain unused or idle, age will cause depreciation. So bear in mind that depreciation is a most important item in computing your income tax.
The factors to be considered in determining the amount of depreciation to be charged off are, first the original cost of the asset, including all expense incurred in connection with placing it in a position to return you rent or other value; second, the probability life of the asset which gives an idea as to what portion of cost should be charged off each year.

RECORD CROWD AT BIG TABERNACLE
One of the biggest crowds of the season attended the tabernacle last night. The song services was the best of the meetings so far. Each person may have a song book, as there are plenty of them. Mr. Brotherton has a faculty of getting the audience and chorus to do their best in singing.
A big delegation attended from Orange, headed by their minister, Harry J. Hill. Ine other ministers were present, among them were C. C. Root of Van Nuys and L. B. Meyers from Orange.
Many people have marveled at the Bible knowledge of evangelist Vawter. He rarely read the evening lesson but quotes it, simply holding the Bible in his hand.
Last night was "The Wedding Ceremony." Evangelist Vawter delt with his subject in an unique way. The text was Ephesians 5:22-33. At first reading it appeared that the wife was commanded to obey the husband in all things, but it was really seen that Paul was not speaking the relationship of husband and wife but of the relationship of Christ and his Church. And in this relationship absolute obedience is commanded. God commanded marriage and left us to regulate it; God has commanded us to accept Christ and has told us how to do it. To ignore the marriage ceremony is to be considered sinful but it is more sinful to ignore Christ's commands for obedience.
To illustrate this Evangelist Vawter traced the courtship and marriage of a young couple he once married. He called them Bernard Jones and Alvira Smith. They kept company for twelve long years until finally one of them proposed but she was still Miss Smith. His folk was willing and her folk was willing but that did not make her Mrs. Jones. Bernard procured a license showing the state was willing but she was still Miss Smith. Bernard came to the parsonage and arranged the wedding with the minister but she remains Miss Smith. The day of the wedding came. The couple came to the parsonage and the wedding came.

"Ebb Tide" Pearl Fisheries Stories

Preciation On Income Tax
Yes, there are a few rates of depreciation which through long use have become more or less standardized. They are: Machinery, 10 percent; furniture and fixtures 10 to 15 percent; autos and trucks, 2 to 25 percent; per cent frame buildings 3½ to 5 percent; brick buildings, 2½ to 3½ percent; concrete and wood buildings 2 percent; concrete and iron buildings 1 percent.
A Los Angeles taxpayer in 1921 a house and lot for $20,000; the value of the house exclusive of the lot was $15,000; it was 5 years old when he acquired it and is in all probability good for 20 years yet. What depreciation may the taxpayer claim for 1922? The probable life of this house being 20 years, he may claim 1-20 or 5 percent of $15,000 or a deduction of $750.00 from his 1922 income. No, he may not claim depreciation on his residence, nor on his automobile, unless the latter is actually used in his business.
A few days ago, a taxpayer told me that he had purchased in 1914 a lot and frame house for $5000, which he has rented ever since. The value of the house when purchased was $2500. In 1922, he sold it for $9000. One of the hardest things I ever tried to do was to make that man see where he should, return a profit of $4800 instead of $4000. Now, you will all agree $5000 is his capital invested, or purchase price; but there is another fact to be given consideration. He had charged depreciation on that house at the rate of $100 a year for 8 years, or $800. We assume then that he had received $800 in depreciation prior to time of the sale. I could not make him understand that this $800 returned to him in depreciation must be deducted from the original cost of the house, which leaves $4200 to be deducted from $9000, giving a profit of $4800 on which he must pay tax.

Have you ever seen pearl divers at work? Comparatively few persons have. You may experience the next best thing when you see the operations of the pearl divers in "Ebb Tide" George Melford's latest Paramount production, which is now showing at the California Theater for a two day's run.
The scene of the operations is an island in the South Seas, controlled by the cruelest man in that part of the world. One may see the divers at work gathering the pearls, many of which are shown in the picture, and the possession of which involved not only one but several tragedies.
"Ebb Tide," adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne's story, is a gripping, thrilling and fascinating picture. It runs the gamut of human emotion, with the play of the strong passions predominating. Assuring it as a really big and worth while picture, "Ebb Tide" has one of the most impressive casts in screen history, featuring, as it does, Lilla Lee, James Kirkwood, Noah Beery, George Fawcett, Robert Hatton and Jacqueline Logan.
A NEW SENSE
"Bill," said a sailor, looking up from his writing, "do you spell 'sense' with a 'c' or an 's'?" That depends," replied his friend. "Do you refer to money or brains?"
Why, what I want to say is, I ain't seem him sense."—Western Christian Advocate.

Two thousand performances! This will be the record of the Mission Play at Old San Gabriel Washington's Birthday. It is the world's record. No other play in the history of the drama anywhere in the world has equalled it.
There will be a huge crowd at San Gabriel on this historic occasion, and it will be something to remember. People from all parts of So. Calif. will motor to the old Mission town if only to be able to say that they were present at the performance which broke the world's record.
The Mission Play is now in its twelfth year and is being attended by the largest audiences in its history. It grows more attractive and appealing with the passage of time, and it is more beautiful now in every way than it ever was before.
