TIRE INSURANCE IS LATEST HERE
A prospective policy to assure consumers maximum service from auto tires is the latest, according to Tompkins & Donley of No. Los Angeles-st. The Tire Replacement Corporation of California, with headquarters in Los Angeles, has been recently organized for the purpose of issuing protection policies to protect consumers of tires against accidents, negligence, defects, cuts, blow-outs, rim-ess, under-inflation, and in fact any road hazard which may reader the tire useless, for a period of one year from date of purchase.
The Los Angeles Tire Co., who have the exclusive agency in Anaheim for this service, as an added service to their patrons, will give a certificate of protection free, with each tire sold by them. Also, purchasers of new cars may protect the tires on their new cars by calling and paying one dollar per tire, providing they have not run over 1000 miles. If, within one month from date of purchase, any road hazard should render the tire useless, a new tire may be purchased for one-twelfth of the original price; within two months, for one-sixth three months one-fourth and so on.
Many hundreds of tires monthly, are rendered useless from the above causes, and these policies will save the motorists, thousands of dollars annually, according to Ed M. Shuffin, manager of the Tire Replacement Corp. of Calif., who placed the exclusive agency with Tompkins and Donley.
GRIFFIN HAS SOLD SEVERAL HUDSONS
G. C. Griffin, new branch manager here for Townsend & Medberry, Hudson and Essex dealers, already has sold several cars in the week or 10 days he has been in the city. Griffin formerly was associated with a prominent Santa Ana distributor. One of the local purchasers this week was Mrs. Thomas Sutton, wife of one of the Reliable Tire Company proprietors.
Griffin soon will open a good service department in the rear of the showrooms on S. Los Angeles-st. Service plus a square deal is his motto, he said.
MIDNIGHT CALLER MAKES WISE CHOICE
If the light fingered gentleman who appropriated part of a Pletcher motometer lock cap from the Anaheim Windshield Co. will call, Joc Nichols will present him with the remainder of the accessory, Joe announced today. "The man probably realized there is no better lock cap to be had," said Nichols, "and it is now and always has been our motto not to permit anyone to leave our establishment unless he is perfectly satisfied. We cannot refrain from complimenting the visitor on his unusual good judgment in selecting goods of known merit."
VESTA BATTERY IN SERVICE SIX YEARS
A. L. Mitchell of Des Moines, Ia., stopped into the local Vesta battery station the past week for a battery test and a little distilled water. This gentleman stated to West Bros. that the Vesta battery in his car was purchased in Des Moines, March 2, 1917. During this period it was re-insulated once at a cost of $7.50. This is the only repairs that have been made since Mitchell purchased his battery. He stated also that the original purchase price was $32.75, and together with the repair expense the total would be $40.25 paid out for battery purchase and upkeep during this period. This would figure less than two cents per day.
Mr. Motorist, have you ever figured out the expense upon your battery the past six years or for any certain length of time? The average life of batteries is about one year. We believe that the above mentioned battery is good for some time to come as it apparently has plenty of pep and energy, said F. G. West. Mitchell also stated that his car has never failed to start since this battery was installed and "It sure gets cold back there, too," he added. West Bros. have many statements letters, etc., from Vesta Battery users that have been given them without solicitation telling about the wonderful performance of this battery. The patented isolator that absolutely "locks the plates apart" preventing warping or buckling of the plates is the big feature of the Vesta. Each Vesta carries an absolute two-year guarantee in writing. You can see it on page 1.

ESSEX TRIP HEARD
"ROUND THE WORLD"
The driver of a stock model Essex touring, carrying U.S. mail, from San Francisco to New York in four days, 14 hours and 43 minutes, while it made America sit up, astounded England, according to reports received by the Essex manufacturers, says G. HOW STUDEBAKER WON BIG RUN TOLD
For the third year in succession the honor of being first to enter the Yosemite valley has been won by Studebaker.
The honors were conferred on a Studebaker big six at the office of the chief ranger in Yosemite Village. A studebaker special six got second permit.
Both cars smashed all previous speed records, making the run over the snowclad Sierra in two days, whereas the time required in the past ranged from three days to several weeks.
It was one a.m. when H. M. Gregory and W. L. Stockinger, of San Francisco, appeared at the office of Chief Ranger Forrest S. Townsley in Yosemite village. In behalf of the Studebaker big six outside, they sought the initial permit of the year awarded to the car that first enters the valley under its own power over any of the reads from the coast. Hardly had the coveted document been handed over when William J. Silva, of Modesto, Cal., and his party drove up in another Studebaker, a special six touring car, and also requested a permit. He was given the second one of the year.
No sleds or tackle of any description were used and the cars battered they way through the snow under their own power. The method followed was to open the throttle to its limit and buck into the snow until progress was stopped. Then it was a case of backing away and charging into the snow like a battering ram. This performance was repeated time after time, hour after hour, until the valley was reached, the cars being forced to show tremendous power and stamina in battling their way through the drifts.

Comfortable Car Economical Also
A car that rides comfortably is at least to that extent an economical car, says Branch Manager Cromer of Dale & Company. Packard and Reo distributors. A car which isn't a unit, which pulls apart and joins this way and that, slowly destroys itself.
The new Packard single six is a revelation of both ease of control and riding comfort. Its longer wheelbase, wider and deeper seats, and resilient semi-elliptical springs, all contribute to that delightful sensation of riding ease for which the Single-Six is noted.
About town, over the boulevards, it affords that soft, velvety ride demanded in urban service; yet it can be driven at high speed over rough roads without the slightest discomfort to the passengers, and without side-swa or pitching.

NO EXPENSES FOR DODGE ON LONG TRIP
Here's a 1918 Dodge not overhaul-ed in 18 months or longer, that was driven 1335 miles over all sorts of roads without a cent of expense for repairs. Charley Mann hereby introduces W. W. Bartlett of his service force, who made his wedding trip by car. Needless to say, the trip was not premeditated with any view of publicity purposes.
Bartlett drove for a distance 75 miles north of Santa Rosa over the coast route, then eastward to Callisoga and on to Sacramento: There was rain while he was crossing the mountains, and the roads weren't all they should be. The only time the hood was raised during the entire trip was to put in oil. Bartlett used six quarts for the 1335 miles and averaged more than 24 miles per gallon of gasoline.

Now that the dream has been realized, says Appleby, the trade and the public knows that Durant again has put over an astonishing achievement second only to that of the Durant car itself.
Other models of cars at still different price levels are also in process of fulfillment by Durant.
Maxwell’s Flat Rate Service Plan Popular
The flat rate service system which the Maxwell management was one of the first to introduce, is doing wonders in bringing Maxwell owners back when they seek new cars and in creating confidence. In the Maxwell, says a bulletin reaching Turton & Lumsdon, Maxwell and Chalmers distributors.
"The real cost of a motor car is but not so many eyes on 'em."
Bartlett drove for a distance 75 miles north of Santa Rosa over the coast route, then eastward to Calistoga and on to Sacramento; There was rain while he was crossing the mountains, and the roads weren't all they should be. The only time the hood was raised during the entire trip was to put in oil. Bartlett used six quarts for the 1335 miles and averaged more than 24 miles per gallon of gasoline.
only determined after an owner has added to the purchase price the cost of replacements, service station labor and fuel during the entire ownership period," says the director of service of the company. The first and most important thing may be the service which the manufacturer himself has built into his car, but it is not the only thing.
The company declares it has put service upon a merchandising or commodity basis.
