VOL. XXVI—NO. 150
TAX ON GAS BACKED BY A.C.S.C.
The Automobile Club of Southern California, while it has not endorsed the proposed cent a gallon tax on gasoline, is backing it, according to a semi-official statement yesterday. Neither the club, nor any otherponent of the bill wants to be considered in the position of fighting concerns which operate heavy trucks on the boulevards, because such companies are fulfilling an essential service. But they do think that the gasoline tax will put the burden of highway upkeep more nearly where it belongs. The same thing is true for the large vehicle as opposed to the small, altho here justice is,not so nearly met.
Senator A. B. Johnson who introduced the act providing for the one-cent tax, a bill supplementary to his act amending the motor vehicle law so as to change the fees charged, may change it in favor of a two-cent tax is said. The tax will not apply bona fide sales for purposes of sale or retail, nor for the purposes of cleaning, using in stationary gasoline engines, etc.
In his amending measure Johnson provides for a flat fee of $2.00 for registration of every motorcycle, auto or other vehicle or trailer. For the registration of vehicles owned by or under the control of manufacturer, dealer, etc. $01 will be asked for the first set of plates and $1 for each additional set; and $5 for each set for a motorcycle and $1 additional.

CLUB HANDS OUT CAMPING ADVICE
It is never too early to think of your spring or summer camping trip in Southern California, because warm weather pops up at any time and it is well to be prepared, says the outing bureau of the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Motorists who are picnic or camp hounds will find much of interest in the latest report issued by this bureau of the auto club. It is well to remember, declares the report, that a good night's sleep is one of the prime essentials of a comfortable and pleasant outing journey. Therefore, be sure to provide a good sleeping bag or mattress.
Many campers, it is pointed out, start out with only a roll of blankets, having the idea of cutting fir bows or gathering pine needles each night for their bed. This sounds fine, and might look good in a book, but fir bows are scarce in California and furthermore the forest ranger is very liable to ride up and say a few choice words about cutting them. It is not hard to find ready made beds of comfort.
Another essential of a pleasant camping trip, says the club, is "going light." That is to peel the camping outfit down to necessities, but not jeopardize the comfort of a party.

TIRE CHIEFS HERE LAUD CITY AS PRETTIEST SEEN
Anaheim had some distinguished visitors in the tire game here this week, when William O'Neil, president and general manager, A. B. Stiller, advertising manager and Howard Smith, sales manager of the General Tire Company of Akron, O., were in the city. They called on W. H. Sears, local distributor, while here.
President O'Neil voiced his admiration of Anaheim, which he said was the prettiest city in So. Calif. that he yet had visited.
The three are on their way to San Francisco, where, on Feb. 14 and 15, a distributors' conference of all California will be held. Sears will leave here on Tuesday to attend it.
NON-SKID QUALITY IN RUBBER ITSELF
The non-skid qualities of a tire do not lie in the form of the tread alone, says F. S. Dunlap of the NuWay Tire company, but in the consistency of the rubber. English makes of tires, for example, owe their non-skid characteristics very largely to the rubber itself.
Dunlap this week got in a supply of the best re-tread rubber, etc., that money can buy and is still keeping to the old prices, despite the advance in these and other materials. He has built up quite a trade in rebuilt tires for those who want a good DON'T RUN DOWN CATTLE ON ROADS
Motorists of Southern California are asked to have a heart when they ocme face to face with herds of live stock moving along the highways of this part of the state.
According to officials of the Auto Club of So. Calif., much consternation has been caused among cattle men by the thoughtless actions of auto drivers.
In fact, the Auto club has received a communication from the California Cattlemens's Ass'n., asking the organization to bring to the attention of the motoring public some word of caution in regard to the situation which confronts the Southern counties of California at this time. It is said that much serious loss of time is occasioned stock raisers who find it necessary to move cattle over the highways by the carelessness of motorists plowing through the moving herds at a high rate of speed or with a lot of unnecessary noise.
As the cattlemen explain in the letter to the Auto club, they are not using the highways as a matter of choice, but as a matter of necessity and they are only asking for consideration on the part of the motor-ing public. Club officials suggest that motorists coming upon cattle or sheep herds on the roads either slow down very materially or stop at the side of the road until the herd has passed as the danger is soon over and little loss of time will be caused.

The new Jordan sedan in blue devil blue has just arrived. The first closed car to come out with this attractive color. The instruments on the dash are all enclosed in glass and the car is built lower, with graceful lines, making it one of the finest finished closed cars ever produced.
The color and finish are the same as those of the famous Jordan Blue boy. One has got to see this job to fully appreciate it, and the J. E. Walter Co., will remain open at nights until nine o'clock the coming week to give every one an opportunity to view the new and latest models in their show rooms. They also have on display the Jordan Blue Boy in Crane simplex gray, which is one of the first models to come out in this color.
CAR ASSET NOW, NOT LIABILITY
"What do the people do with all the autos?" is a question often asked of an automobile dealer and its answer contains food for a lot of thought," says George Dunton, Ford, Fordson and Lincoln distributor.
There are more than ten and a half millions of cars now running in the United States. Between one and two million are trucks or commercial vehicles used for merchandise haulage exclusively. More than a million are taxicabs, busses and public passenger carriers. Between one and two million are working for bus companies.

IN RUBBER ITSELF

He has built up quite a trade in re-built tires for those who want a good article, but don't feel like paying some of the prices asked.
Dunlap is specializing on the Norwalk tire, for which he has the exclusive agency. He maintains that the Norwalk has the non-skid quality in the rubber already referred to. The tubes, also, are equal to any on the market, he declares.
Improvements Many Upon New Nash Six
Bob White, Nash and Franklin distributor, has been selling a Nash every two or three days lately. Among the purchasers have been Ed Steele of Fullerton, Walter L. Pierce of LaHabra, D. V. Beckett of Fullerton, R. E. D., and J. F. Klein, all of whom bought Nash six touring cars, and Albert Nelson of Fullerton, a Nash Cabriolet.
Others who purchased cars of White recently were B. F. Allshouse of Anaheim and Herman Helt of Tustin.
This new Nash has so many new features—new without being grotesque or putting previous models out of date—that Nash fans generally are enthusiastic over it.
The Nash brake drum has 54 per cent more power than those of previous models, and provides for more brakage per 100 pounds than that of any other car made in America, says White. Other improvements are the new carburetor and manifold, oil kipp plunger, brake equalizer, steering wheel, and clutch, which is one of the easiest to operate made.

NOT LIABILITY
"What do the people do with all the autos? is a question often asked of an automobile dealer and its answer contains food for a lot of thought," says George Dunton, Ford, Fordsdn and Lincoln distributor.
There are more than ten and a half millions of cars now running in the United States. Between one and two million are trucks or commercial vehicles used for merchandise haulage exclusively. More than a million are taxicabs, busses and public passenger carriers. Between one and two million are working for business and professional men who consider the car as part of their office equipment. The remainder are not exactly classified, but the probability is that they are serving both occupational and social necessities of their owners.
"The automobile is not restricted to any class of income. Owners range from the humble laborer to the richest man in town. Ownership of cars by people of small mans indicates that the car is a source of profit. Many a car has earned its cost in a year in various ways."
For these reasons, all authorities agree that there is no limit to be put upon the ability of America to buy and use cars. And these facts also explain the fact that in spite of the increasing monthly production of cars by automobile factories, the demand keeps ahead of the supply.

CADILLAC PARTS
AT CATALOG PRICES
Cadillac owners can now buy replacement parts through the United States at a uniform catalog price and without paying war tax, freight or handling charges, according to a statement by M. B. Lacy, the Cadillac Motor garage company.
"In connection with this innovation no increases have been made in cat-olog prices," declares Lacy. "In fact, during the past year, prices have been reduced on all parts most generally called for, so that the absorption of the war tax and shipping charges by the factory represents a clear reduc- tion and a substantial saving to Cadillac owners.
"The new plan conforms with the whole trend of the automotive industry toward reduced and standardized repair charges. That cost of maintenance has a direct effect upon future sales is now generally realized.
"We have endeavored to recognize this relation between sales and cost of maintenance by producing a car of the very highest grade, one which soldom needs replacement parts. Records show Cadillacs running today after 500,000 miles of service. When, thru accident, unusual conditions or long life, replacements are needed, it has been our aim to make cost low.
"The lowest possible price for parts has been occupied with educational work for service men. Our technical school for this purpose is the oldest in the industry and has been teaching service men effective and economical methods for the past 13 years."
