Saturday, Feb. 10, 1923 MABEE-PERGANTOS MATCH FAST GOING (By Sargum Spront) Those who braved the cold and the long drive to Riverside to attend the Mabee-Pergantos match last night saw one of the fastest, most hotly contested wrestling bouts ever. Each man succeeded in obtaining one fall, so when the time limit was up, there was nothing to do but to call it a draw. The Y. M. C. A gym was well filled, all seats being taken and a goodly number standing. Herman Strof, John Hackenschmidt and Champion Ad Santel were introduced. Santel was prevailed upon to referee the main bout. There were three good preliminaries. Mabee received a big hand when he came to his corner. It was agreed that the time limit would be an hour and a half, and the Greek and the Farmer lad tangled. They traveled so fast that part of the time we were dizzy. In the first few minutes Mabee secured a toe hold that surely had the Greek in bad, but he finally broke away. Time and again each man was in trouble. Mabee was the first to gain a fall. He clamped on a front body scissors and arm lock that did the trick. The time was 46 minutes. After a ten minute rest, they returned to the mat, and the going was faster than ever. Each man broke an arm key and Makee got away from a series of head scissors only to fall into another. The Greek was displaying his cleverness to good advantage. The second round of head scissors sapped Roy's strength to beat the band but he finally got away and soon had his man in trouble. As the Greek broke away, Roy rolled into a hammer lock and the second fall went to the Greek in 24 minutes. After the rest, with only 20 minutes to go, both men went out with a determination to win. Holds were put on and broken with such rapidity that we lost track of them. Pergantos broke away from an almost sure fall in the last seconds, and both men were on their feet when the time lim- Bathelmess Gives Screen His Greatest Photodrama in "Fury" Perhaps no word in the dictionary has been quite so overworked, misused and abused as "great." It is a word that has been applied indiscriminately to many motion pictures. Once in a great while—and in this instance it is very properly applied—a photoplay justly deserves the appellation. Such a motion picture was "Tol'able David." Now comes Richard Barthelmess in another which impels us to go one step further in superlatives and say "Greater," if not "Greatest." That motion picture is "Fury", the First National attraction which opens tomorrow for three-day run at the California. Replete with human interest, stirring with action, flavored with a heart touch that in one moment draws a tear and the next laugh, this production, filmed under the direction of Henry King, is a chapter out of life itself—life of the rugged sort that stretches from the bounding main to Limehouse, London, and Glasgow, Scotland. In this screen story by Edmund Goulding one sees Richard Barthelmess as "Boy" Leyton, the timid second mate of the "Late Spray," whose rough old father, the captain, hates him for his docile change, however Leyton, learning plated elopement boarding house springs at his façade overjoyed at his courage seizes Captain Leyton stroke and, dying from "Boy" to who has been beaten man she had run must be done beside. The whole nature of "Boy" undergoes a sudden change, however, when old "Dog" Leyton, learning of his son's contemplated elopement with Limehouse boarding house slavey, casts aspersions upon Minnie. The enraged lad springs at his father and the captain, overjoyed at his son's display of courage seizes him to his breast. Captain Leyton suffers a heart stroke and, dying, exacts a promise from "Boy" to avenge his mother, who has been mistreated by the man she had run away with. This must be done before he marries Minnie. Though the news breaks the heart of the girl, "Boy" is determined to carry out his father's wish. He finds his mother in Scotland, then at sea comes the gripping climax with "Boy" and the man. The story has a novel twist that brings it to the happiest of conclusions.
