INSPECTS CARS AND BOATS FOR CITRUS FRUIT PARASITES The Bureau of Quarantine of the State Dept. of Agr. is not discouraged over the cut in appropriations by the state administration, L. A. Strong, chief of the bureau, said in Santa Ana today. Strong, who was calling on A. A. Brock, county horticultural commissioner, voiced his confidence that Gov. Friend W. Richardson was trying to do the best he could by the department. With Strong was A. P. Messenger, quarantine officer at San Pedro. Messenger inspects fruit etc., on incoming vessels that might be suspected of bringing in noxious pests. Ask whether the citrus industry was concerned over the matter of inspections of autos, boats, etc., Strong said the industry should be deeply concerned. And not only the citrus fruit industry, but truck producers. Inspections of autos entering the state along the southern border steadily are increasing. Strong and Messenger are touring the principal citrus growing centers of the South among other points. They go next t o Riverside and San Bernardino. The star, called by artists “the camoe girl,” is supported by Rod La Rocque Warner Richmond, De Sacia Moores, Frank Norcross and Jane Jennings. The title fits the picture perfectly and has a psychological bearing on the plot. It concerns two men and a girl. The girl is hostess at a hotel in the mountains and both men are in love with her. One is an artist, the other a banker, jealous, dangerous. It is largely his conflicting impulses that give “The Challenge” its title. Knowing that the girl prefers the artist, the banker is tempted in many ways to gain the upper hand at the expense of his rival. In his soul sounds the challenge of hate when it lies within his power to send the artist to his death while they are in a lonely mountain pass. The challenge of reason is uppermost when he decides to play safe and allow the young fellow to return unharmed. And other challenges confront him—the challenge of curiosity, of revenge and so on. GOVT. BLD’GS ASKED FOR SCORE OF CITIES LOS ANGELES, Feb. 9.—Recommendation that a new $3,000,000 postoffice and federal building be constructed in Los Angeles Angeles was made to congress today by Postmaster General Wark and Secretary of the Treasury Mellon. Two cabinet members also recommended that new federal buildings be authorized in nearly a score of principal cities. They pointed out that lack of adequate facilities of handling government business had forced the postoffice department to rent hundreds of structures. TO EXPLAIN AGREEMENT WASHINGTON, Feb. 9.—Secretary of the Treasury Mellon will be called before the senate finance committee tomorrow to talk about the challenge. INSPIRING MUSIC AT BIG TABERNACLE The music at the Tabernacle last night was inspiring. George Elder, minister of the Christian church at Whittier, and Mrs. Elder attended. Last night’s sermon was a continuation of Wednesday night’s. The three propositions stated Wednesday night were (1) God Almighty does a God’s work and a God’s work only, (2) He uses human agency when it is in the realm of human achievement, (3) God needs help. The first two propositions were proven Wednesday night and the third one last night. Evangelist Vawter said, “When I say God needs help, I mean body, Trinity. This is itself seems to be a paradox: self contradictory, that God needs help. To me, God is Almighty, I am not an evolutionist. I believe that he spoke the stars into their places. He is almighty unless he limits himself. To make the matter clear, Mr. Vawter then used several simple illustrations. He said that when a woman sews all she needs is a needle, thread and thimble. This is a very simple equipment. Suppose it please the woman to use a sewing machine. She must have treadle, wheels, bands, shuttle and everything it takes to up a machine. If she loses one part the work stops. The evangelist then asked how many men ever did any sowing. He said that in the mountains all they needed was a sack thrown over the shoulder containing wheat. In other parts of the country they have a better plan. If it pleases the farmer to use a drill he mutts have all the parts of the machinery and the horses and harness. It is a better plan than cold one but the farmer must have all the intricate parts of the machinery. God is powerful and all wise so he chose a plan for the saving of the world. It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save the world. So faith cometh by hearing by the word of God. Remans 10:17. The evangelist asserted that he was not throwing bouquets at the ministry as we usually term the ministry. The Bible called it preach- TO EXPLAIN AGREEMENT WASHINGTON, Feb. 9.—Secretary of the Treasury Mellon will be called before the senate finance committee tomorrow to explain the terms of the Anglo-American debt agreement. An unusual feature was a visit from the K.K.K., five of whom came with quiet, deliberate tread up the stile, presenting a letter to Brother Smith, enclosing a generous donation in token of their appreciation of his efforts to lift our community onto a higher moral plane. He read the letter aloud making appropriate comments on the donors.—Longview (Tex.) Leader. Payne, Prop. 138 E. Center God is powerful and all wise so he chose a plan for the saving of the world. It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save the world. So faith cometh by hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17. The evangelist asserted that he was not throwing bouquets at the ministry as we usually term the minister. The Bible called it preaching when any Christian told the story of Christ to others, as when Philip, Stayman, went to the Eunuch and preached unto him Jesus. The Christian can preach Christ in the store, in the factory, on the street or wherever he is. God has limited himself and He has no other way of saving the world. The Gospel is the power of God until salvation unto every one who believeth. God is Almighty but he cannot save your boy unless someone tells him of Jesus." There will be baptizing at the beginning of the services tonight.
