Did the Government pay 9 per cent on the war savings stamps, redenption of which began Tuesday at postoffice all over the country? Whether or not it permitted any such "get-rich quick" scheme, one could get that much interest, according to Postmaster J. F. Ahlborn. One could buy the stamps on the last day of any month, give notice of intent to redeem them next day and in 10 days get the money. The interest was four per cent compounded semiannually if the stamps were held to maturity, or three per cent if withdrawn before maturity. But the stamps increased in value on the first of each calendar month. Thru the local postoffice $139,500 worth of these stamps of the issues of 1918-19-29-21 were out. The interest ceased after Jan. 1. The stamps may be exchanged now for Treasury Savings Certificates in denominations of $25, $100 and $1,000. One pays for the first $20.50, for the second -82.00 and for the third $820. Exactly five years from date of purchase they are redeemable. The interest is the same as on the stamps plus 40 cents per $100.00. One can receive for the stamps $18.00 per $100.00 and value for value in certificates, if exchanged. Ahlborn said he expected to deliver five $1,000 certificates. The certificates cannot be cashed within from date of purchase and quet and program.
