BOXER IS BROKEN
Joe Chaney, crack 125-pound boxer of the local club, was going a long as pretty as you please in his bout with Spud Murphy at San Diego Wed. night when he started to put over the final one about the end of the second round when it landed rather high on Murphy's head and the result was that Joe sustained a broken mitt. It also cost him the fight for the San Diego boy was thereby able to forge ahead with enough points for the balance of the bout to get himself a draw. There was no question but that Chaney would have won hands down in another moment or so.
Joe had established himself in the good graces of the southern town fans as a knockerout and it was in trying to live up to reputation that he suffered the accident.
Chaney has been promised a main event as soon as his injured hand mends sufficiently.
In the main go Frankie Monroe won over Kid Moha on points, after a fast setto.
Two other local boxers made a good impression with San Diego fans by their classy performances. Young Terry put over the k.o. on Phil Yorko of San Diego in the second round while Tobby Montoya beat Kid Aguirre in four rounds of interesting milling.
In the other bout Frankie Jerome beat Kid Mex all the way in four rounds. It appears that Anaheim boxers are getting to be a drawing card with other out of town clubs for not only San Diego and San Bernardino are drawing on their services, but now a call from the Covina club has been sent in for the show next week.
Tonight on the Urbita Athletic club's program at San Bernardino, Darnley has Tony Ross boxing Benny Jordan in the semi-windup; Charley Dememt mixes with Young Berman; Johnny Nandes, who is popular with Gate City fight fans, tangles with Sailor Waitman in a return

The greatest race for many moons is now being staged. It is the Clara Phillips handicap. The stakes are $2000 against the liberty of the much heard of Clara. This race is over a rough course from the wilds of Mexico to the land of rice and Chinks. Clara so far has had so long a lead that the nearest runner-up has not been able to get in her dust.
Suzanne Longen, the queen of tennis players, displayed to the world at Nice, France, Jan. 3, that she is still the wonderful player who defeated Mrs. Mallory a few months ago. Suzanne defeated the English star, Miss Howett, very early in straight sets. Suzanne has taken on some weight and displayed more power to her driving.
Gar Wood's speed boats, Miss America and Miss Detorit IV, defeated all the speed boats in this neck of the woods. The east proved too much for the west in this particular branch of sport. But there is another year coming and the west will have new boats. You can not keep a man down when he keeps on trying and some day the west will breast the waters ahead of the east in speed boating.
The fastest growing and largest producing crops known is the common "bootleg," "home brew," or "hootch." You plant a little hop in a bed of mash and fertilize it with a portion of wood alcohol and presto you can begin to reap the harvest. The quickest the crop grows the greater the 'kick.' sometimes the fruit of a good "brew plant" kills you, which is not as bad, other times it blinds you for life or paralyzes you and such little things that make you really pay for your—well, somebody said there was one born every minute, but it is beginning to appear as if they come in swarms.
