FRENCH GOVERNMENT SHOWS BIG DEFICIT
PARIS, Nov. 24—France is planning to spend in 1923 nearly four billion francs more than the treasury will take in, a report of the finance committee on the general budget today showed.
Expenditures for next year are put down at 23,180,000,000 francs with estimated receipts at 19,255,000,000.
The report points out that there is uncertainty regarding the "financial future," because it is not known how much France will receive from Germany, how France will pay her foreign debt, or what ba the exchange value of the money received, and paid out in this way.
The report states that Frand's military expenses now are $8 per cent

"BLACK BEAUTY"
SOLD FOR $100
"Black Beauty," the most successful animal classic ever written, was sold by the writer, Anna Sewell, for less than $100, says Vincent Starrett in the Mentor Magazine.
In America alone the book has achieved a circulation to date of more than 3,000,000 copies, yet the Quaker girl who wrote it on her sick bed, and whose life was one of remarkable bravery and cheerfulness under the most depressing of circumstances is practically unknown to fame. She was born in Yarmouth, England, March 30, 1820 and died in 1877, one year after the book was published.

FIRE PUMP "KICKS OFF" LIGHT SWITCH
A fire alarm called the department to the home of E. L. Anderson, 524 E. Adele-st at 7:30 p.m. Thursday where considerable smoke but no blaze originated in the attic, either from electric wire or flue. Firemen soon extinguished it.
The city was left in darkness for two brief periods when the fire pump was started, the turning of the juice into the pump motor "kicking off" the power into the plant.
