DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS
No man ever yet asked to be, as the days pass by, more and more noble, and pure, and heavenly-minded—no man ever yet prayed that the evil spirits of hatred, pride and passion, and worldliness might be cast out of his soul, without his petition being granted, and granted to the latter.
—Canon Farrar.

AMERICA GOES TO AID OF THE NEAR EAST
In the daily news may be found two civilizations and two religious systems contrasted strikingly. Over there In Asia Minor and near the gates of Constantinople are hordes of armed Turks, floating over the terrible massacres and unspeakable outrages which they perpetrated in and about Smyrna, and thirsting for blood and pillage and ruin in other quarters. With them there is no thought of mercy; no movement or purpose to relieve distress among refugees who are suffering and dying. They give their devotions to cruel, merciless sword and the cruel precepts of the religion which they espouse. There Mohammedanism is in flower and manifests itself in its true light toward all religions, not allied with it.
Here in Christian America and throughout the Christian world organized efforts are making for the relief of the hundreds of thousands of refugees driven out of Asia Minor by the relentless Turks. Subscriptions will be gathered throughout the United States, and at Constantinople and other points where refugees are gathered or whence they may be reached, the Near East Relief organization will function with characteristic American promptness and energy. There the Christian religion manifests itself. There on that historic ground the two religious systems function in a contrast of blood-thirsty cruelty set over against gentle mercy and life-saving humanitarianism.

Gambling with one's health usually leads to very serious loss. For loss of health is the most lamentable of losses. There is no precious possession under heaven that should be guarded more sedulously than one's health.
Every disastrous fire prevented is just so much saved for the general good. For utter destruction of property by fire constitutes a loss to the whole community as well as to those who wiredly owned the property burned.

In consonance with the beautiful spirit of the typical American home should be physical beauty—beauty of interior decorations; beauty of furnishings; beauty of floor, and wall, and ceiling; beauty of living room furniture and appointments; beauty of dining room, and of bedrooms and bath room. In a word, beauty should reign from front to rear, from basement to roof. Neatness too, should prevail in the home.
Then there is beauty of grounds around the home—a lawn; flowers and shrubbery and all that may be borrowed from nature to make the home property ornate.

WHAT EDITORS ARE SAYING
JUVENILE BOOKS MAY HARM
Santa Ana Register
A monograph on children's books, written by a prominent Swedish authority and translated by the librarian of the Detroit Public Library, says very frankly some things which parents and elders need to know about a class of books now offered to boy and girl readers.
There have been too many so-called children's books in recent years. Some of these have been good, worth reading wholesome and entertaining. In addition to such juvenile volumes there has been a flood of books "banal of tevt and hideous with impossible drawings." The latter serve no good purpose. They merely lower the child's sense of good English, of humor and of correctness of line and color.
Another of the miscellaneous developments noted is the grading of children's books according to age. There can be no arbitrary classification of literature for different juvenile years.
To feed children's minds with petty commonplaces and nick-nacks slank, platitudes and sentimental jingles is to do a permanent injury to discrimination and good taste. Lacking, as many of them are, in beauty, poetry and integrity, they create a narrow point of view, slack minds and an apathetic and listless attitude toward all good reading matter.
Fortunately there are many excellent juvenile books. The old fairy folks lore which have been existed still exist. Librarians, wise and experienced school teachers and thoughtful parents should co-operate in bringing these to general attention.

TOM SIMS SAYS:
NEW YORK, Oct. 12.—It is hard to discourage nature. A living tree is growing on an elevated station platform here in New York in proof of that. Nourished in a small mound of earth swept during many years from elevated trains, it has survived many dry spells and other exigencies of storm and city life. Old-time carmen say the shrub was noticed growing on the pile of dirt several years ago, and car cleaners have steadily added to the mound as the tree flourished.
New York is willing to look far afield for amusement if she sees any signs of it growing about our wide continent. Consequently, the razing and sporting fraternity and—breathe it gently—a considerable number of others of our population are planning to take a trip out to the southwest coast for the opening of the races at Tia Juana, Mexico, on November 30. The rejuvenation of this famous old track was one of the frequent bits of conversation during the recent world series ball games, when the followers of sports from over the country were gathered here. New Yorkers used to go to Tia Juana, but it has deteriorated recently. Now a San Diego company with the attractively Spanish name of Zaragoza, has obtained possession of it, and promises to turn it into a clean health and vacation resort, and the race enthusiasts are rejoicing, accordingly.

He was a most impressive looking man who was selecting an exceedingly dignified hat in a Fifth avenue shop. Middle-aged, "bankerish" looking, he had the attention of three clerks. Finally he chose a hat, and then asked the salesman to "lay it aside until tomorrow, as my wife will have to pass on it before I could wear it." And I would dare many people to try to pass on any of that man's decisions.
Never has New York been so restless in the matter of homes as this fall. The gas company reports that 46,725 families moved in the two or three days covering the first of October, according to the gas meter changes required. This, of course, does not include the thousands who live in residence hotels, or in "quarter-in-the-slot gas meter" apartments. Last year, only 31,242 meters had to be locked and unlocked.
