WALLIE REID WINS FIGHT WITH BLANKS Can blank cartridges win a battle? They can if we are to take seriously one of the comedy scenes in "The Dictator," a new Paramount feature starring Wallace Reid. This scene seems to be convincing proof that morale and confidence more than bullets are the important factors in action. In this scene from the picture, centered on the play by the late Richard Harding Davis, Mr. Reid and a army of rebels of a pseudo-South American country charge the loot, firing volleys of blank cartridges from their guns and turn a scar defeat into victory. The government troops don't know the shells they are firing are blanks, but, thinking them real bullets, they fire with courage and make a victorious charge. This is only one of the many big spectacular scenes in this new picture, which was filmed under the direction of James Cruze. More than 1,600 persons were used in this battle scene. Lila Lee is the heroine, playing the daughter of the rebel leader, Dr. Rivas, portrayed by Theodore Kosloff. Others in the cast are Walter Long, Alan Hale and Kalla Pasha. "The Dictator" is exhibited at the California Theater Friday and Saturday. GARDEN GROVE GARDEN GROVE, Sept. 1. It's a Long Beach Everything is rapidly getting into shape for the opening of the Garden Grove Union H. S. Sept. 11th. The three bungalows are being moved over from the grammar school grounds this week, making a group of sight temporary buildings, class rooms and two dressing rooms. The lecture room of the Baptist Church has been secured for the temporary use of the music department. To take the place of Mrs. Grace Fine, whose name appears in the manual, Miss Ellen Dodson has been secured. Miss Dodson has a Master's degree from Stanford, and has been teaching in Mills college. There is already assurance of a large junior class and several seniors. Before the Garden Grove U. H. S. was organized there were about 140 students in the district, all of whom found it necessary to go elsewhere for their high school training. Last year there were 93 such students, in outside high schools. This year the number will be reduced below 50, and by another year we should be able to care for all. Students may register any time after 8 o'clock, Friday, Sept. 8th. Mrs. Bernice Phelps of San Dimas, Mrs. Bertha Harvey of Porterrville, Mrs. Beulah Urwick of Pomona, spent Saturday and Sunday at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Niles. Pollins of Cleveland, Ohio, and Miss Minnie Pollins of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, departed Friday for their homes, after a two weeks' visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Pollins. Holt and daughter, Miss Loya, accompanied by Mrs. Geo Barnes and Miss Mae Wiley, enjoyed a trip to Forest Home Monday. While there they witnessed a real old-fashioned hall storm. E. M. Dozier and family arrived Thursday from a 10 weeks' trip to various points of interest in the northern part of the state including BIG OPPORTUNITY AT BALBOA PALISADES A seaside residence district, where those who desire the sports of the ocean front without all the noise and traffic of a typical resort community. That is the project announced today by the William Wilson Co. of Los Angeles and Pasadena, which has taken over Corona del Mar and renamed It Baboa Palisades. The William Wilson Company is the same firm which developed Fliatridge into a famous country estate tract and also the same firm which brought out Oak Knoll as one of the most fashionable districts of Pasadena. In the plans for the development of Balboa Palisades the purpose is to create home sites for families of all means, yet restrict and safeguard them so that Balboa Palisades will retain its character as a family place rather than a seaside resort. This spot, by the way, takes in one of the few remaining stretches of desirable beach property still available in So Cal. It lies along the new state highway and offers both deep water sports and the sports of more sheltered inland waters. Although at the opening of the tract, Sunday, the prices of lots will range from a few hundred up, announcement is made now that a substantial advance will take place after Sept. 15. Usual provisions have been made, in offering these lots, for modern conveniences. Those who desire to make trips of inspection to the tract Sunday will find the trip an easy one. Either they can take the P. E trains to the ferry at Balboa and go from there by boat to the ferry landing at Balboa Palisades, or they can drive out by auto. Motorists will find the most direct route through Santa Ana. Go south on Main-street through the town and cross the So.Pac.tracks about four miles beyond. Then drive 4.5 miles until a conspicuous sign,"Balboa Palisades" greets the eye Turn there and follow the arrows toward the beach.
