LEADING NEW
VOL. XXVI—NO. 12
COAST ROUTE IS NEARLY COMPLETE
Only Eight Miles of Dirt Road Left From S. F. to Mexico
There is a great and unusual stir of motor car travel throughout America at this time and So. Cal. is largely the center of activity.
This report is just issued by the shipping department of the Automobile Clug of So. Cal., which keeps an accurate check on the movement of motor vehicles all over the United States.
Although thousands of motorists more than ever before, are traveling across the continent in their own machines, other thousands are taking long distance jumps by rail, but shipping their own cars with them, particularly for touring in So. Cal.
Groups of motorists who wish to ship their cars to California or to other lands are organized by the club through its shipping department, so that freight rates may be secured as low as possible and to the greatest advantage of the motorists.
By tabulating the movement of these motoring groups, the club is thus able to keep a finger on the

Groups of motorists who wish to ship their cars to California or to other lands are organized by the club into its shipping department so that weight rates may be secured as low as possible and to the greatest advantage of the motorists.
By tabulating the movement of these motoring groups, the club is thus able to keep a finger on the pulse of motoring activity and it is declared by its officials that the actual use of automobiles is in a great state of flux at this time, due in a large sense to the attraction of So. Cal. as a touring field.
Motorists in the central and southern counties are shipping cars in large numbers to Hawaii, South America, India and even to Japan. Shipments are also being made at this time to practically every eastern state for short tours. But the heaviest noted travel is toward this part of California, it is reported.
STUDEBAKER SALES
Harry D. Riley reports the sale of a Studebaker special six touring car to W. L. Chastian of Orange. Others who have purchased cars are W. W. Wilkinson of Los Angeles, H. C. Grant of Orange, J. J. Seale of Anaheim and Ben Yorba of Anaheim.

EXHIBIT OF FORDSONS IN L.A.
Industrial Tractor Show to be Feature of Pageant of Progress
The Fordson Industrial Tractor Show, which has been held in the principal cities of the United States since early in May, is scheduled to make its initial appearance on the Pacific coast during the Pageant of Progress at Exposition Park, Los Angeles, Aug. 26 to Sept. 9, according to word just received by George Dunton, local Ford., Fordson and Lincoln dealer.
“This exposition, which is educational in nature and devoted to demonstrating the industrial as well as the agricultural possibilities of the tractor in every day use, follows exactly the lines of the great exhibition just closed in Chicago, where the Fordson industrial exhibit was the outstanding feature of the immense Pageant of Progress program, covering a period of two weeks,” says Mr. Dunton.
“Elaborate preparations have been made for the housing of this exhibit, which will include some 50 displays of industrial and agricultural uses of the Fordson tractor. An immense space has been reserved in Exposi-

In Past 12 Years
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 26—Motorists can find consolation and a silver lining to the high price cloud by comparing the tire costs of 1910 with those of today, according to H. A. Price, the local Goodyear branch manager.
"Are you skeptical? Well, run your doubting eyes over these two price lists, showing the comparative costs of four of the most popular tire sizes in 1910 and 1922:
1910 1922
30x3 $18.40 $9.20
30x3½ 21.30 10.05
33x4 51.85 25.25

NEW CLEVELAND MODELS ARE HERE
Here's some more news that is now from the J. E. Walter Co., distributors of the Jordan, Chandler and Cleveland. The first Cleveland sport model ever put out by the manufacturers has arrived, and it's a knock-out, the same as the Jordan and other new models of recent date. It has a trunk rack, five wire wheels, Spanish leather upholstery (khaki top and all the "fizin'" that belong to a first class, completely equipped sport car. It is painted a handsome olive gray, and has enough nickel to make it a real sport. If costs $1460 delivered here.
Then there's a Cleveland coupe."

"USED CAR SCHEME"
DIDN'T WORK HERE
Anaheim didn't prove to be a fertile field for one J. A. Haring, who came here with a used car sale scheme. He came two or three months ago, if salesmen of H. L. Grove, local branch manager for Townsend & Medbury, Hudson and Essex distributors, remember correctly, and he didn't stay long.
If he should come back here the following copy of a letter just received here, will explain his method. The letter was forwarded by the T. C. Power Motor Car Co. of Helena, Mont., Hudson and Essex distributors to the manufacturers, who are distributing it:
"Several days ago there was a party through here by the name of J. A. Haring, of Grand Rapids, Mich. He claimed to be the greatest little used car salesman on earth and conducted a two-day sale here which was generally speaking, a rank failure. Purtehrmore, Mr. Haring misrepresented considerably as to advertising and bill that he intended to do. The sale was in no way a success and we are writing this to monstrating the industrial as well as the agricultural possibility of the tractor in every day use, follows exactly the lines of the great exposition just closed in Chicago, where the Fordson industrial exhibit was the outstanding feature of the immense Pageant of Progress program, covering a period of two weeks," says Mr. Dunton.
"Elaborate preparations have been made for the housing of this exhibit, which will include some 50 displays of industrial and agricultural uses of the Fordson tractor. An immense space has been reserved in Exposition Park, adjacent to the stadium, and two huge tents will be erected. One being 70x240 feet, used as the main exposition tent, and the other a dark tent in which there will be given a daily program of motion pictures."

"His method is to go to the Automobile Dealers' Ass'n, where there is one and get them to have all the dealers pledge from two to ten cars at $10 each on the promise he will do a lot of advertising and billing, not only in the city, but the territory tributary to the city in which he operates. As a matter of fact he ran four very small ads and his hand billing was only partially done in the city."
NASH CARRIALE IS ATTRACTING NOTICE
The public is becoming more and more interested in closed cars as the season advances, according to the Bob White Co., Franklin and Nash distributors, whose Nash carriole at its low price has been attracting much attention in Orange-co.
This is a five-passenger car, of and really a new type of model. It sold at $1,595 delivered here.
The body is of metal, the lines are graceful and the car's length striking. Individual front seats with anaisle between our oshrd lou ououaisle between may be folded forward, the driver's seat being close against the steering wheel, the other under the cowl.
The upholstery throughout the interior is of fine grade wool cloth and the trimmings of the same material. A dome light illuminates the interior at night.
The body design is adapted to quantity production, and this accounts for rth low price asked.

TWENTY-SEVENTH YEAR
RILEY ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR COUNTY AUTO SHOW
Plans for the automobile show which will be given in connection with the Orange County Fair at Santa Ana were announced today by Harry D. Riley, chairman of the special committee of the Orange County Auto Trades Ass'n, which has agreed to take over this department of the exposition.
The show will occupy a separate tent with 18,000 square feet of floor space, and exhibits will be as comprehensive and varied as at the auto show of the Valencia Orange show. Practically all of the dealers and accessories men in the county will show their cars and goods, and all the latest models—including some of 1923—will be shown.
The tent will be nicely decorated for the occasion, and various surprise features are anticipated as at the Orange Show here.
The committee consists besides Riley of L. P. Damewood of Orange, Otto Haan, J. E. Livesey, Jr., and John L. Wheeler of Santa Ana.
That the county organization would take over the show only became known Thursday night at the monthly meeting in Cherry Blossom Inn, Santa Ana.
Commercial exhibits from concerns of national or semi-national repute represented in Los Angeles are expected.
NEW 1923 BUICK FINEST BUICK YET
Bill Goodrum has received the first of the new 1923 Buicks, and it's all that was expected of it. No previous six five-passenger touring has been quite so fine a Buick.
In the first place it's a handsomer car than ever, with low, graceful body and top lines, heavy one-piece crowned fenders, drum head lamps and parking lamps and nickeled beading where cowl meets hood.
The front half of the car with its room provides greater comfort and driving convenience than ever before. The steering wheel is positioned at the right angle for steering, the control levers are longer and the instrument board is within easy reach.
The low, comfortable seat in the rear compartment invites relaxation and the passenger has every convenience at hand.

The 1923 Four Cylinder Roadster
Smart, sturdy—you won't find another two-passenger four cylinder roadster that compares with this new Buick in quality or in price.
Inspect it from any angle—snug, beautifully tailored top; long, low body lines; heavy one-piece crown fenders; lots of room for two people and two compartments for their luggage.
A big steering wheel that comes up to you, a shifting lever that operates without bending forward, a transmission lock and improvements which give all 1923 Buicks a Class "A" fire insurance rating.
And, below the surface, the famous Buick Valve-in-Head motor and chassis with refinements throughout which set a new standard of quality and performance in automobiles.
These are just a few of the many distinctive features that make this new roadster a car without an equal in its class.
We'll be glad to give you a demonstration any time.
