DRILLING CENTERS
IN NEWER FIELDS
According to reports of oil field development operations filed with R. E. Collom, state oil and gas supervisor, drilling is actively concentrated in the new oil fields of the state whereas development of the older fields has been slowed down and production shut in so as to make way for the high grade flush production of the new fields which together with small consumption is forcing large quantities of oil into storage. Fifty per cent of the new drilling reported since Jan. 1, has been for the four new fields, as follows: Long Beach, 80 wells; Huntington Beach, 73 wells; Santa Fe Springs, 56 wells; and Elk Hills, 41 wells. The combined production of these fields from the 250 producing wells is about 75,000 barrels daily, which is one-fourth of the present daily consumption of crude and 7000 barrels per day more than the present daily surplus of production over consumption.
Apparently realizing the necessity of bringing about a more equitable relationship between production and consumption of petroleum in spite of the over production brought about by the rapid drilling of new fields the larger companies have shut in about 20,000 barrels of oil daily. This was accomplished by shutting down 580 producing wells in the older fields of the San Joaquin Valley and Santa Maria districts.
Union Oil Co. of Calif., the successful discoverer of the valuable production at Santa Fe Springs oil fields, on May 22 shut down over 100 wells, being all but its line wells, on eleven properties in the Santa Maria district. A number of producing wells were shut down in Coalinga. Shell Co. of Calif., discoverer of Long Beach oil fields with a daily production of about 6000 barrels in that field, has shut down approximately 100 wells in the Coalinga field with an estimated average daily production of 5000 barrels. Standard Oil Co. has about 30 wells shut in Kern-co. representing 4,000 barrels daily. Pacific Oil Co. has shut in the daily production of 3-

Long Beach steps to the front with something distinctly new in an oil lease. A strip of land 30 feet wide and a couple of hundred yards long has been leased and will be developed for oil. The land is properly a roadway and was exempt from development until one property holder gave a right of way to get into it. The 30 foot strip will be developed by the Progressive Oil Syndicate, a group of Long Beach business men. Fodgers-Edwards have taken the drilling contract for the first wells. The wells will have to be lined up, the production tanks being placed between the rigs.
Taking the property away from a field of high priced and spirited bidders the Transport Oil Co. secured the 2½ acre school property lease at Long Beach. The property is considered the choice in the field and for it the Transport gives a royalty of 47½ per cent and a cash bonus of $6300. One offer made was a bonus of 400 per cent royalty and a cash bonus of $40,000. The Transport is under obligation to begin drilling at once, and is getting the material on the ground for the rig. The lease calls for two wells.
The Shell Co. added another big well to the field by bringing in Dobyns No.1 at $500 barrels. The well has set up in 2345 acres and is on eleven properties in the Santa Maria district. A number of producing wells were shut down in Coalinga, Shell Co. of Calif., discoverer of Long Beach oil fields with a daily production of about 6000 barrels in that field, has shut down approximately 100 wells in the Coalinga field with an estimated average daily production of 5000 barrels. Standard Oil Co. has about 30 wells shut in Kern-co. representing 4,000 barrels daily. Pacific Oil Co. has shut in the daily production of 3,500 barrels from 170 wells in the Coalinga and Midway fields. General Petroleum Corporation has about 150 wells shut in which normally produce about 2000 barrels of oil daily.
Approximately 2,000,000 barrels of crude oil was run to storage during April, 1922, increasing the state's storage to a total of almost 37,000,000 barrels. Field storage facilities of the state can hold about 78,000,000 barrels of oil. Ninety per cent of these facilities are owned by the three large marketing companies: Associated, Standard and Union Oil. At least 4,000,000 barrels should be deducted from total storage in considering quantities available for the market. This represents the oil which lies below outlets in reservoir and tank bottoms and therefore is not available for the market. At the present rate of consumption, about 270,000 barrels daily, there is a four months' supply of oil in storage. At the present rate between production and consumption the remaining storage space will be filled in twenty-months.
