MOB THREAT AFTER TEACHER'S SUICIDE
ELGIN, Ill., May 31.—Mob spirit of Elgin, aroused by the suicide of Mary E. Long, discharged by the school trustees, after she had served 27 years as a teacher, "quieted down today."
Announcement by school trustees following a midnight conference with a citizen's committee that dismissed 14 other teachers with Misa Long had been rescinded norved to calm the public.
The citizens committee was appointed at a mass meeting attended by many of Miss Long's former pupils, where recurrent mands that the school trustees be "starred and feathered" were heard. Word of the threats were carried to the trustees by the committee.
New of Miss Long's death brought through the city like wildfire. Telephones jangled all over the city telling of the "protest" meeting. A large crowd gathered for the inquest at which the aged mother, Mrs. Jenie Long, was the only witness.
She told the jury that despondency following her daughter's dismissal resulted in her suicide. Miss Long soon could have retired on a pension.
She thought her life was wasted and there was nothing left to live for," said the mother.
When the jury returned a verdict of "suicide due to school troubles," the crowd proceeded to a larger auditorium where immediate action in reinstating other dismissed school teachers was demanded.
"Let's show the board they can't cause the death of any more or our school teachers," one speaker demanded.
"Tar and feathers is what they need," another shouted.
