DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS The world is a great dance, in which we find The good and bad have various turns assigned; But when they've ended the great masquerade, One goes to glory, the other to a shade. —Crowninshield. Why not have a "Catch a Criminal" week? The better one grows oneself, the better one thinks the world is becoming. Some men can go out and catch fish, where others catch only prevarications. Europe wants Uncle Sam's interest, and Uncle Sam, on his part, wants his interest from Europe. Vacations should be real vacations, with all care and worry, and thought of the day's work left behind. This much is to be said to the credit of President Obregon: He has brought peace to Mexico that is really peace. Reduced freights should greatly increase the volume of shipping. The railroads, in the long run, should be better off because of the reductions. If the political bee entered Francisco Villa's bonnet, it must have stung him. Nothing has been heard recently of his political aspirations. If there were more homes with the right kind of atmosphere for AID OF AMERICA SOUGHT BY EUROPE Russia is the rock upon which the conference at Genoa is splitting. All hope is not lost, however. The conference is not broken off sheer, with an impasse. There is to be a reconvening later, to discuss Russian questions, according to present plans. While Great Britain and France have not been able, up to the present, to reach agreement as to Russia, yet they have not broken away from the conference, in angry estrangement. Negotiations will proceed privately, no doubt, in efforts to reconcile differences. But the outstanding development of the situation is the insistent call of Europe for the United States to participate in the conference, particularly as to the fate of Russia. This country, of course, is deeply and directly interested in efforts to bring about economic stability in Russia and to open the channels of commerce with that country again. But whether or not conditions can be and will be made such as to permit of American participation in future conferences as to Russia remains to be demonstrated. This country refused the invitation to be represented at Genoa because the government at Washington considered the program as being more political than economic. The United States steadfastly refuses to be dragged into Europ's political quagmires. This is wise and salutary, and always should be the attitude of this country. FOREST PROTECTION IN MEXICO SOON Forests in Mexico are to be protected by the federal government, in brought peace to Mexico that is really peace. Reduced freights should greatly increase the volume of shipping. The railroads, in the long run, should be better off because of the reductions. If the political bee entered Francisco Villa's bonnet, it must have stung him. Nothing has been heard recently of his political aspirations. If there were more homes with the right kind of atmosphere for boys and girls, there would be fewer criminals and vicious men and women a few years hence. Self-help is infinitely better than outside help. The person who is able to help himself or herself, is pauperized in spirit if he or she takes outside assistance. The city or state that does not advertise itself suffers the same rate as the unadvertised business. The way to build up a community, and to make it prosper is to advertise it. Learn some good lesson daily, whether you be 8 or 80 years old. Age has nothing to do with one's capacity to learn—at least, it should have nothing to do with it. When one ceases to learn, one ceases to live. The king of home-runs in baseball this year may not be named Ruth, at all. From present indications, his name will be Ken Williams. There are many enthusiasts who would be greatly pleased to see him bear off the honors. FOREST PROTECTION IN MEXICO SOON Forests in Mexico are to be protected by the federal government, in much the same manner that protection is given woodlands in the United States. A forestry service is being organized, down there, and the country has been divided into forestry zones to carry on the work with system. The people are to be educated as to the importance of preserving forests against fire. All countries, sooner or later, must take practical steps to safeguard their forested areas. It is gratifying for Americans to know that the sister republic south of the Rio Grande is taking up this conservation movement in earnest, before the valuable timber of that region has been ruined. The United States Forestry Service is patterned after by the Mexican government, which is an unspoken, but nevertheless eloquent compliment to the efficiency and success of the American federal system of forest protection. Safety in traffic must be the first consideration with all. Those who will not voluntarily make it the first consideration must be compelled to do so, for the welfare of the public. Reckless driving is a menace that cannot be tolerated. FISK CORD TIRES CORD TIRES Time to Ke-tireT (Buy Fisk) All over the country today men are talking about the service Fisk Tires give. Well, the best thing for you to do is confess." "I know, but she won't let me read the letter, and I don't know what to confess." BIG GIGGLES COMING New York Letter by Leonard Price NEW YORK, May 31.—The world belongs to youth, and so do its jails and its policemen and all the power of running things. At least that is the decision of Cornellus Fitzpatrick, 82 Jefferson-st, Hoboken. Last Sunday, his daughter Margaret, 18 years of age had a beau. Mr. Fitzpatrick walked in to the parlor and not very cordially interrupted their conversation. What did Margaret do? Weep at the parental wrath and weepingly say "Goodbye" to her suitor? Not she. She telephone for the police, and they declared Cornellius was disturbing the peace unwarrantedly, and took him off to jail, while Margaret returned to the parlor and talked to her young man in peace. We are already working on the "crime wave of 1932," here in New York having grown somewhat discouraged in trying to do anything about that of '22. The Henry Street Settlement has made that its specific goal in its extensive campaign to do away with boys gangs. The gangs are made up of school boys, Miss Lillian Wald, settlement head, explained, whose love of excitement leads them to make heroes of the gunmen and bandits operating in the city. The careers of budding geniuses or just ordinary boys and girls of real talent, are taken considerably more seriously by their families than they used to be, believe. Today, instead of hearing stories of tyrannical parents locking a boy up to keep him from his violin, we hear of them packing up all their household goods and moving to an art centre where he can study to best advantage, changing their own lives for the sake of his gift. I was tremendously impressed with that the other day, when I was talking to some students at the Institute of Musical Art here in New York. I expressed surprise that so many of them lived in New York—and that their families lived here. I had thought of that school as being a cosmopolitan place, one of the musical gathering places of the country. If so, you had a laugh at the peculiar clothing styles and solemn expressions on the faces of former generations. Did it ever occur to you that our photographs are also going to get "the merry ha-ha" when future generations discover them in some obscure nook of the air-ship houses that will be in use 75 or 100 years from now? It is hard for us to believe this. That has always been the way. Vanity being eternal, each generation—while laughing at the past—is cooksure that the present is "the real thing." I expressed surprise that so many of them lived in New York—and that their families lived here. I had thought of school as being a cosmopolitan place, one of the musical gathering places of the country and the world. "But don't you understand?" cried one of the girls. "Our families live here just because of us. Of course we have come from all over. We are from all parts of this country and a few of us from Europe, but our families understand the hard work we will be doing here, and that it means solid devotion for three or four years, anyway, so they come with us to give us homes while we work. You see those of us who come here, come with the idea of becoming real artists or exceptional teachers. It is a serious thing. We don't come unless we have definite talent, which our families and ourselves take with tremendous seriousness. It is big enough to become the great family interest, so our families as well as ourselves are dedicated to the work during our studentship." One of our best known public statues in New York is that of Nathan Hale, down in City Hall Park. The Revolutionary hero stands with his hands tied behind his back, and victorious surrender on his face. The story is going the rounds this week of a present city official who was walking through the park with one of his commissioners. As they passed the statue, the commissioner said, "Mr. Official, don't you think that statue of Nathan Hale is a beautiful piece of work?" "Hale, Nathan Hale?" said the official with a puzzled tone. "Why, I thought that was a statue of Houdini!" The first American gun to fire a shot in the World War was carried through the city streets the other day as the centre of a mounted artillery parade. One battery of the Provisional Sixth Field Artillery of the First Division, the battery that fired the first shot across the lines, made up the parade, which opened the intensive drive for enrollment in the Pattsburgh Citizen's Military Training Comps. From the topline vaudeville attraction to the cinema feature, it is one of the finest balanced and well constructed shows that has ever been seen here. The acts too are out of the ordinary. The headline feature is none other than the famous Cortez Sisters, noted globe trotters and vaudeville artists who have appeared in the largest剧院 in the country. Only recently, they were presented at one of Los Angeles' largest vaudeville palaces. Their program of extraordinary songs and dances are marvels to say, the least. Another act of importance will be the celebrated Stanley company, presenting "fun in silhouettes." Here is an act that is unique in that there is not another act of its kind before the public today. Then Kinkaide and Kinkaide offer a splendid novelty entitled "Love Never Dies." It is dandy entertainment. Leonard and Germaine, those dancers extraordinary present a snappy melange of terpish-chorean art which at once pleases mightily. On the same bill will be a surprise act. The cinema offering will be beautiful Elains Hammerstein in her latest cinema success entitled "Why Announce Your Marriage?" This is a wonderful picture. The entire combination of offerings are high above par, and together with Organist Reese at the huge Murlitzer, a complete program is assured. CALIFORNIA Wednesday, May 31, 1922 Comments of the Press What Editors Are Saying AUTO-SUGGESTION AS CURATIVE Sacramento Bee M. Coue, the famous Frenchman who aims to effect "cures" through mental suggestion, as recently told in press dispatches from England, is given much serious attention in the London Illustrated News, a long-established and conservative publication, of the highest standing. It has two pages of pictures showing the manner in which patients are mentally influenced or self-controlled in his public demonstrations. The underlying principle of his method seems to be that of the power of the imagination, even when opposed by the will. He contends that, as between the two, the imagination or subconscious force will prevail, if it be physically possible. Coue tells his followers to repeat to themselves twenty times, on going to bed and when awakening in the morning, these words: "Day by day, in all respects, I grow better and better." Let this be done with confidence and faith, he instructs, and "the greater the conviction the more certain will be the results." That is an example of auto-suggestion; in other words of influencing one's self from within by faith and repetition, in any direction desired. It is not a new idea, but one that psychologists long have been familiar with. And it is undeniable that faith and confidence often give excellent results, not merely with relation to bodily alliments, whether real or fanciful but in the practical affairs of life. In fact, it may be said that success or failure often depends upon the confidence with which any calling or project is undertaken. But, of course so far as application to any actual and serious disease is concerned the idea of auto-suggestion may be carried to a ridiculous extreme.
