Local Red Cross Gets Publicity
The following is taken from the Red Cross Courier, official organ of the American Red Cross, published at Washington, D.C.:
The Public Health Department at Anaheim, Cal., is less than a year old, but is a lusty youngster, with cooperative backing from the Red Cross, the City Trustees, the School District, the Parent-Teachers' Association, and all of the philanthropic groups in the city. Several of the groups, including the Chapter and the Shop, contribute to the salary of the public health nurse.
The advent of the public health nurse was welcomed as a community asset by Anaheim, a prosperous town in the citrus belt of southern California, and her value increased in public opinion, as the public health program developed. At a big community fair in which a Baby Welfare Tent was featured, a prominent citizen told the story:
"We thought that there was no poverty, no helplessness in our town, and prided ourselves upon the care we give all of our citizens. When our nurse began making her rounds she unearthed welfare problems that lay hidden, and now we must get busy and provide a way to raise funds to finance the work we see is necessary for the welfare of our town."
The vision and organizing power of the public health nurse, linked with the "community mind" is responsible for the success of the Public Health Service in Anaheim. It started with every evidence of united interest, not the least being that of the newspapers of the town. The support of the nurse is shared by the Chapter, the schools and the city, the major part from the Red Cross. This enables the Chapter to share in the direction of the work and insures adequate supervision of the nurse's services by the Division supervisory staff.
Miss Margaret Kuehl, the Public Health nurse, calls the school children her "advance agents," in campaign of health work in the school. She says:
"The Board of Education on account of the lack of funds can support no physician and only a part-time nurse; therefore the work has been rather slow. Yet this delay has given the opportunity of gaining confidence of the children, paving the way for more successful follow-up work. In every case, where the school child has been my advance agent," one might say, I have been welcomed into the home. Through the interest and cooperation of the Superintendent of the grammar schools, we have secured a new frame building for the Mexican children close to the largest Mexican camps. It is outside the city limits but with transportation is easily reached."

These were planted on the 4th of July, 1844, and in 30 days began to sprout. Now these peas had been buried perhaps 3000 years and seemed to be dead, yet they were made to rise to new life.
