Nash Holds Up Well In Varied Cal. Roads The strenuous travel on desert roads, mountain grades and altitudes from below sea level to seven or eight thousand feet of Southern California is the kind that eastern automotive engineers consider ideal for really testing out their cars. In several cases factory engineers have spent months and even a year or two out here driving cars hard over this varied country in an effort to pick out the so-called "bugs" that nearly always trouble a manufacturer in the bringing out of a new car, says Bob White, Orange county distributor for Franklin and Nash cars. Southern California, with its great variety of road conditions, its long stretches of paved boulevards, rough mountain roads and steep grades, is considered ideal for the proper testing out of an automobile from the factory standpoint. If there are any so-called "bugs" in its makeup they are sure to develop under the conditions present here, and factory engineers are thus able to report back to the factory with their recommendations for eliminating the trouble. It is such severe testing as this that has contributed very largely to the high quality of the present model Nash Six. Earlier faults, that may have shown up here and there in the models of two or more years ago have been discovered through CAR OF MAXWELLS HAS REACHED HERE The Louisiana floods delayed the new Maxwells of Turton & Lumsdon, a carload of which arrived this week. The firm has been expecting the cars for the past two weeks. Apparently the cars came over most of the country before arrival, said a member of the firm. Following its policy of first come, first serve, those who put in their orders early will get the benefit of the early deliveries. Satisfied Buyer Studebaker Aim The Studebaker is not a cut price car. This is the temper of the publicity, says Harry D. Riley, northern Orange-co distributor, being put out by the manufacturers, who while emphasizing the extraordinary sales of the car, whose earnings it is predicted will be reflected in increased stock dividends, point out that quality and a satisfied customer are the things first in their minds. The makers declare, in fact, that enlistment of every purchaser as a booster of the machine is one of the biggest factors in their success. Much of the company's new business, they say, is due to the silent recommendation of patrons, who themselves are confirmed users. Example is better than precept, but Studebaker owners back their car in both ways. In this way, a bond of confidence between owners and distributors, as between distributors and manufacturers, is built up that has been found invaluable on all sides. Service, stock ownership and car ownership repeatedly have been found to go together with the Studebaker. All this has gone to give the manufacturers' name "Studebaker" a significance that it could possess in no other way. Quality, reliability, up-to-dateness, mechanical perfection—these are some of the things associated with the Studebaker—and there are many others. In addition to these record trips in which comparatively high speed was maintained there have been such strenuous tours as that taken recently by C. C. Lamb of Anaheim, who recently completed a trip thru the Imperial Valley and return in his new 1922 Nash Six. Lamb says his previous Nash Six was a dandy, but this new job is sure a BEAR. She too the entire stretch of mountain grades between San Diego and El Centro in high gear and always plenty of reserve power to pass somebody up if necessary. The sturdiness of the Nash construction—in springs, frame, steering gear, motor, transmission and differential—were shown up to excellent advantage on this trip and Lamb declares the Nash is capable of making any such rough trips at high speed if necessary, regardless of weather or road conditions—and Lamb has had years of experience in just such travel with many makes of motor cars. Naturally, if you bought this battery and the servi station that sold same to you told you that it was guaranteed for a period of time, you would, no doubt go to this party and tell him your troubles. Practically ALL batteries are sold on an insurance basis, and in case of a PROSPERITY HERE, SAYS WALTER CO. Has real prosperity returned, or is this just a spring rise? That's the question everybody is asking. The answer will be revealed to any man who will make a flying trip from Maine to California, or from the Great Lakes to the Gulf, says the J. E. Walter Co., Jordan and Cleveland Distributors. Real prosperity is just over the hill. The automobile business is going great guns. As Well As Price Automobile owners, as a rule, have reason for being pleased with the outlook for better service department facilities and a resultant greater satisfaction in owning and driving a car. It is evident that manufacturers are placing more and more emphasis on this phase of their business, not because it is being demanded by the car owners, but because it has been demonstrated by the few who have insister upon good service from the very outset, that it pays in dollars and cents to keep a customer satisfied. Charley Mann, the Dodge Brothers dealers here, is one who knows what it means to represent a factory that is extremely particular about the sort of service its dealers provide. "The factor has been steadfast and consistent in its service policy ever since the manufacture of Dodge Brothers cars began," he said. "Keeping pace with the recommendations coming from headquarters, we have steadily developed our own facilities. Among the comparatively recent innovations of importance to the car owner is the flat rate system, which enables him to tell in advance just how much it can possibly cost him to have his car adjusted or repaired. A specified maximum time allowed for each operation and he can see it all in black and white before the work is started." "With more than 700,000 cars already sold, it is not difficult to see why Dodge Brothers are so insistent on good service. The annual replacements among these 700,000 alone call for a production as large as the total output of many factories." The dealer's comments on Dodge Brothers service policies are borne out by a recent article by Samuel Hopkins Adams, in Leslie's Weekly. "Where the 1922 purchasing public is going to profit chiefly is not by buying cheaper," says Mr. Adams, "but in increased utility at lower expense." "That the initial cost of a car is not the principal item, is a lesson which has been hammered at the public in a series of highly effective advertisements. This principle of economical upkeep, the Dodge and Ford companies have adopted as a fundamental principle. "The new service scheme represents the rare phenomenon of a three-way profit; to the factory on the sale of its equipment, to the service station in its augmented earnings, and to the owner in an unprecedented reduction of his bills." DESERT ROAD OPEN TO BIG BEAR LAKE The Auto Club of Southern California has issued this bulletin: Desert Road to Big Bear open and in excellent shape, absolutely dry and no skid chains necessary. Mill Creek and Rim of the World Routes (Clark's Grade) are expected to be open between May fifteenth and June twenty-fifth. YEARS GUARANTEE Have you ever given the matter a thought? Just what do a guarantee as "so-called" by many manufacturers of storage batteries mean to the motorist today? If the battery in your car should "quit" today or tomorrow what would be necessary for you to do? Naturally, if you bought this battery and the servi: station that sold same to you told you that it was guaranteed for a period of time, you would, no doubt go to this party and tell him your troubles. Practically ALL batteries are sold on an insurance basis, and in case of a battery proving defective, and after inspection the battery dealer should find same to be beyond repair he would allow you a certain amount from your battery providing you gave it the proper care and attention since the day of purchase. THE VESTA BATTERY IS NOT SOLD IN THIS WAY but on an ABSOLUTE GUARANTEE OF 2 YEARS. E. Hauser of The Frank P. Taggart Co. "The man who owns a car knows that wherever the car may be, his investment does not depreciate as long as the car is giving him satisfactory service. He is not interested in any fluctuation in price. "He knows that if he wants a new car, or a different car, the value of his car as a 'trade-in' is not in any degree affected by the price of the new car. So the season's automobile owner is happily indifferent to the matter of price, which seems sometimes to the new buyer to be an item of solemn importance. "I believe that an understanding of this is becoming more general among the army of prospects who are postponing from day to day the acquisition of the automobile which they have long desired to own, and I am confident that as soon as a clear understanding of this principle of automobile merchandising reaches the public generally, no one will hesitate to buy an automobile. "As a matte rof fact, it seems impossible to conceive of any further..."
