BUICK SERVICE MEANING DEFINED What Buick service means is told at some length by E. T. Strong, general sales manager of the company, who says: "Buick service is classified under the following headings: 1. Parts manufacture and distribution. 2. Efficient mechanical service on the part of the dealer. 3. The spirit of the organization. These are the three general phases in any organization serving the owner—of any organization endeavoring to insure an adequate return on the owner's investment. Let us consider each briefly in connection with the Buick plan. Buick parts for cars of other than current models are manufactured in a special plant, built to the same specifications and of the same material as the originals, and with the same machinery, jigs and fixtures used in factory production. These parts of standard quality pass to the service department, where they are carefully packed and shipped to the Buick branches and distributors. The parts are then forwarded to dealers. Parts requirements are scientifically checked. Special travelers are in constant touch with dealers, inspecting parts stocks and suggesting methods of handling and ordering. The best and latest systems devised are adopted to make it possible for the dealer to supply a needed part in good condition and quickly. As for mechanical service, the department under the supervision of men having wide and varied experiences particularly fitting them for the work, is responsible for the knowledge and facilities of the dealer for handling repair and replacement work in a manner that would pass the rigid Buick factory inspection. For many operations special tools and machines are required. The department works with the dealer to see that he is equipped proportionate to his anticipated needs. 3,000 TIRES SOLD; NO REPLACEMENTS Three thousand Bell tires have been put out in Los Angeles and Orange counties since Nov. 21, and not a replacement has been asked, according to Bob Brunner, general manager of the Bell Tire & Rubber Co., of Los Angeles, who was here this week on a tour of agencies. The Reliable Tire Co. is local distributor. During the same period 5,000 tubes have been sold. The manufacturers attribute their success, says Brunner, to the fact of their 10 years' experience, which enabled them to detect and now avail the defects of other tires. The tire was tried out for a year on the Pacific slope before it was marketed in quantity. Distribution is directly from factory to consumer. George T. Bell, the president, is interested also in the eastern factory. The tire carries a 10,000-mile guarantee. Franklin Pioneer In Air-Cooled Field "The great favor with which air-cooling is being received by the American public today is looked upon by officials of the Franklin Automobile Company as evidence of public recognition of the correctness of the standards which they set up for themselves over twenty years ago, when the production of the Franklin car was first begun," says A. G. Mancy, Vice-President for the Franklin Company, according to the Bob White Company, local agents. "Low grade fuels of the present day require a high degree of heat in order to use them with any degree of efficiency. The air-cooled motor operates successfully at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, as compared with the limit of 212 degrees (the boiling point of water) in the water-cooled car. There are many other advantages to be gained from the use of an air-cooled motor—less parts, therefore, less weight, and a complete freedom from the numerous troubles which water-cooling invites. "It is not beyond the realm of possibilities that having followed the Franklin into the air-cooled field, some manufacturers may gradually turn to other principles of construction which have served to make the Franklin automobile famous." Franklin was a pioneer in the air- "As for mechanical service, the department under the supervision of men having wide and varied experiences particularly fitting them for the work, is responsible for the knowledge and facilities of the dealer for handling repair and replacement work in a manner that would pass the rigid Buick factory inspection. For many operations special tools and machines are required. The department works with the dealer to see that he is equipped proportionate to his anticipated needs. And in much the same way the factory department, directly and indirectly, shows a close interest in the spirit of Buick service stations and their employees. Mainly because of the caliber of dealers, Buick service has been characterized by courtesy, willingness, thoughtfulness, co-operation all of the things that make it a pleasure for an owner to deal with an Authorized Buick Service station." Bishop, Inc., of Shreveport, La., who was impressed by the way the cars stood up in the Louisiana oil fields. Dodge Bros. have purchased the film and are showing it at their agencies, says Charles H. Mann, local agent. Says the Shreveport Times of this film: “All who ever traveled over the roads of North Louisiana, leading through the oil fields,” said the Times, speaking of the producers’ plans to make the film, “know that a venture of this nature warrants application in advance for a life insurance policy.” Later, referring to one of the numerous trips required to complete the picture, the Times said: “Mr. Bishop and his fellow adventurer selected the third day of the three-day rainy period for one of the trips. “Signals had gone forth: ‘Roads impassable. No chance to get to Haynesville, to the Caddo oil fields or any other place where wealth comes from the soil in back stream.’ ‘But Mr. Bishop and Mr. Morgan said nothing is impossible in this day of modern transportation in a closed car. They started on their venture. The trail led from Shreveport to Haynesville. Throughout the trip the rain poured down in torrents. The roads were practically impassable. Swirling eddies in the water-glazed mire might even have caused the hardened mariner to hesitate. Their sedan, however, went forward steadily. They reached their destination.’ Again, speaking of later trips, the same paper says: “Running up the steep slope of a hill, they permitted the car to fall on its side. There is no camouflage about the stunt. It is real. It happened as filmed. “The car falls on its side, the woman watching the picture gasps and utters a short exclamation of fear for the safety of the two intrepid autoists. Even the hardest man has his doubts and there is a queer feeling all may not be well. “Suddenly a form emerges through the window opening. It is Mr. Bishop, Mr. Morgan follows.
