FORD AND LINCOLN OUTPUT BOOSTED George Dunton, local Ford and Lincoln agent, has issued this bulletin: LINCOLN—Speeding up production and expect to reach 30 per day by March 15. From this point production will be increased. The company will add plants to manufacture parts now bought, and may manufacture its own bodies. FORD—is employing 40,000 men on part time, equivalent to 32,000 men on full time. Built about 72,000 cars in January, which is about 70 per cent normal. Ford production record for 1921 follows: American plants in 1921 turned out 928,750 cars and trucks; Canadian plants 42,348 and foreign plants 42,860, a total of 1,013,958. Tractor production totaled 36,782. August with production of 118,100 cars and trucks, was the largest month in the company's history. Largest single day was July 14 when 4,461 cars and trucks were built. Kearney, N. Y., plant assembled 93,409 cars and trucks, establishing a record among American plants. Detroit was second with some 4,000 less. The past year exceeded by 104,000 the record for retail sales of cars and trucks in the United States. Production, however, for American and foreign plants was some 14,000 behind 1920, the difference representing cars on hand at the first of year 1920 but sold during 1921. Fordson Tractor Company has reopened, starting with 200 men. Its reduction in price of the tractor to $395 is said to be far below the cost, and the company claims to have received large orders. This price cut of Ford brought about a price war in the tractor field, and International, Case and several more made material cuts. LINCOLN—When Henry Ford purchased this company for $8,000,-000, he at once took hold and added 200 men to the 400 still employed, and will add men steadily. There is indication that in addition to the existing Lincoln organization VESTA DISTRIBUTORS CELEBRATE SUCCESS Claude H. West and Floyd G. West, proprietors of The Auto Electric Maintenance Co., with headquarters in Anaheim, Orange county distributors for the Vesta battery, motored to Los Angeles to attend the annual state convention of the Vesta Battery Distributors of California. The convention was held on March 15-16-17-18th inclusive at the Ambassador Hotel. Ward Perry, president of the Vesta Battery Corporation, and F. S. Armstrong, advertising manager, both from the factory at Chicago, were the principal speakers. The 100 Vesta distributors who came from all over the state were shown a merry time. A banquet of six courses was served at 6:30 on Thursday in the Cocoanut Grove room. Following the dinner the distributors were entertained by the Ambassador Stock Company with music, songs, etc. The Vesta Corporation reports a very prosperous year as well as the Vesta distributors. An increase of fully 100 per cent in new service stations and sales during 1921 was reported. All of the Vesta distributors present reported a gradual increase in the sales of Vesta batteries owing to the fact that Vesta batteries are giving such wonderful service and each one carries a two-year factry guarantee. Each customer is given a written guarantee of two years' service, with no repair expense during this period. The new Allrubber battery with the new Vesta rubber case was on display for the first time, also the New Radio Battery. Durant Delivered Daily This Week A Durant a day is the record of deliveries of James E. Appleby, distributor for Orange-co., during the five working days of this week. Every one of these cars was sold to an Anahelmer, Appleby reports. Durant registrations in California are continuing to climb up the scale. With the first deliveries in November, the sales for that month ranked 32nd. In December, when quantity deliveries started, Durant stepped up to eighth place, which position it held. LINCOLN—When Henry Ford purchased this company for $8,000,000, he at once took hold and added 200 men to the 400 still employed, and will add men steadily. There is indication that in addition to the existing Lincoln organization Ford dealers to the number of 15,000 will market the Lincoln, and they are seemingly anxious to do so as hundreds are rushing to Detroit to secure the agency. The $610,000 back federal taxes have been paid. Announcement has been made that no radical change will be made in the car, and the company will adhere to the policy of not having so-called yearly models. Prices were cut $800 to $1200 with a statement that they are based on larger production and must be maintained for a long time to come. Daily This Week A Durant a day is the record of deliveries of James E. Appleby, distributor for Orange-co., during the five working days of this week. Every one of these cars was sold to an Anahelmer, Appleby reports. Durant registrations in California are continuing to climb up the scale. With the first deliveries in November, the sales for that month ranked 32nd. In December, when quantity deliveries started, Durant stepped up to eighth place, which position it held in January. The February figures just released place the Durant for that month at seventh position. This is a remarkable enough record for a new car, but add to this the fact that deliveries to date have consisted of but one model, the touring car and you have a truly wonderful showing. The other leading makers on which the figures are high consist of complete lines of from four to twelve models. The Durant dealers have many orders for closed models on the four-cylinder chassis, as well as many requests for the six, which will swell the total as soon as these cars are available for delivery. Los Angeles Street ROAD CONDITIONS ARE IMPROVING The Auto Club of So. Calif. has issued this road bulletin: Valley Boulevard—With the exception of the El Monte Bridge that road is now entirely open and free from detours. San Diego Inland Route—Offers boulevard conditions in its entirety, as the unpaved portions of the route in San Diego co are smooth and were not badly affected by recent rains. San Diego Coast Route—Paved the entire distance. Free from bad detours. Coast and Inland Routes North—Both in excellent conditions. Los Angeles to Imperial County—The Touring Bureau of the club gives all motorists a choice between the two main routes connecting Los Angeles with Imperial valley points—one by way of San Diego, the other by way of Beaumont. Impassable between Big Pine or Bishop and Goldfield on account of snow in Westgard Pass. The road is passable up the Owens river valley as far as Bishop and in fairly good shape with the exception of the rough dirt stretches and detours between Lancaster and Mojave. Pacific Highway—Los Angeles to Portland. This route is open the entire distance and subject to heavy travel. No difficulty with road or weather conditions at present over the Siskiyou Mountains in northern California. Mount Wilson Road—Was opened again to travel on March 22nd for touring cars. Big Bear Lake—One of the club's crews attempted to get into Big Bear a few days ago, but on account of snow and melting snow conditions they had a difficult time in reaching the valley proper. Until there has been at least a week of sunshine in the Big Bear valley district the trip will not be advisable. Camp Baldy Road—Open and in good shape. Plenty of snow in Ice House canyon beyond the resort. Idylwlild — Road leading from Hemet to Idylwlild is open and in HORSESHOE TIRE IS YOUR LUCKY CHOICE There are at least half a dozen tires on the market still little known, that their users would declare were the equal of any of the big, well known makes. One of the six is the Horseshoe, for which James, the vulcanizer, of 222 North Los Angeles-st is the local distributor. This tire has one of the best mileages, by reason of its tough tread, of any tire on the market. Slowly sales have been mounting in So. Calif., until now the Horseshoe is a tire to be reckoned with by competitors. Only one price. Re pair work guaranteed. Service, particularly vulcanizing, unexcelled. GABRIEL SNUBBER SELLS FAST HERE The turnovers in three or four weeks! That's the way the Gabriel snubber, of which Nenno & Boek have the exclusive agency, in Anaheim and vicinity, has been received here. It will fit any car at all—just like a pair of tires. The primary object of Gabriel snubbers is to cause the car to ride easily—to give that soft, floating movement to the car body sought by every motorist. The secondary object is to protect the car from vibration, prolong the life of both car and tires and reduce general upkeep expense. Gabriel snubbers have been on the market since 1911 and are the most extensively used shock-preventing device for motor vehicles. They are the only device embodying the true snubbing principle, the application of which is patented. There is no other snubber, the word being our registered trade mark, and stamped on our product for the protection of our customers. More than sixty leading car manufacturers have adopted Gabriel snubbers as standard equipment, or drill the frame for them. PARKING CARS ON ROAD DANGEROUS Don't park your car on the road! this is the official warning of the Auto Club of Orange co officials. WOMEN'S MOTOR IDEALS NOT MEN'S The woman who drives her own car has certain ideals regarding motor car design and construction, that, while they parallel very closely, she demands of men-folk, have certain well defined limits that automobile manufacturers and dealers have come to consider very important. In commenting on these features, Manager L.E. Martin, of Dale Co., local agents, said: "Women motorists, more than men, appreciate the change from the old fashioned quadrant gear shift to the modern "X" index. The easier shifting with such a system and a center control rod located directly over, and connected directly with the internal shifting gears makes for much more pleasure in driving." "Accessibility of 'choker' located on the steering column, rather than REAL SERVICE for your car's Starting, Lighting and Ignition System is offered here." Skilled "trouble shooting" that saves you time and expense, repairs that are made by automobile electricians working with absolute knowledge and precision, and a parts supply that is comprehensive enable us to render a service that is ideal. Big Bear Lake—One of the club's crews attempted to get into Big Bear a few days ago, but on account of snow and melting snow conditions they had a difficult time in reaching the valley proper. "Engineering ad Signposting—the engineering and signposting department has had its most active year. It has successfully maintained its reputation for giving the territory within its jurisdiction the best marked roads in the world. Our highway inspection engineer has inspected the various state highways under construction and has made reports of unusual conditions of failure on state highways already constructed. He has inspected and reported on the Lancaster-Mojave work, the construction thru Gaviota Pass, the Santa Maria-Bakerfield road, the Paso Robles-Dearborn lateral and the work along the Salton Sea. He has made several visits to the test highway at Pittsburg and has kept a detailed record of the progress of the tests. A general survey of the proposed state highways has been made, particular attention having been given to the availability of local materials for use in improving these roads. In September, the highway inspecting engineer, with the field secretary, made a trip from the Grand Canyon through the Navajo Indian reservation, the purpose being to investigate the feasibility of a proposed road extending from the Grand Canyon to Shiprock, New Mexico, through the Navajo reservation, which they found would shorten the distance from the East to Southern California by one hundred and thirty miles. "The signposting department has covered every road in its territory during the par year. It has signposted all W.W. Central Nevada, Bishop to Carson City, Searchlight to Kingman, and has done a great volume of maintenance work." A significant fact is that all cars registering higher than the Durant have been in business eight years or more. PARKING CARS ON ROAD DANGEROUS Don't park your car on the road! this is the official warning of the Auto Club of Orange-co officials in their campaign to secure more careful driving throughout the county and state at large. "No matter what may be the matter with your car," said A. S. Ralph, manager of the local club, "you must always drive your car off the paved highway before you stop to remedy it. The law states very plainly that this must be done, and any one who wilfully disobeys, is liable to arrest and punishment. "It is a very wise law, when you stop to consider it from all sides. On a narrow road, a car stopped on one side can block a considerable portion of traffic and make it necessary for cars traveling in the same direction to turn over to the other side, and forcing them to chance being hit by cars traveling in the opposite direction. "It is just as easy to pull off the road to adjust the carburetor, fix a tire, or make any other repair necessary. Should any other car hit you while you are stopped on the road, it might be considered your fault. "Don't take chances! Protect the other fellow and you will protect yourself every time." GAS”DEMONDS TO JUMP NOW (Continued from Page 1) that have not been thoroughly tried out, the company has established a record of no accidents during the entire three years. The pilots of the fleet are all men of long flying experience each with over a thousand flying hours on their records. Commercial operation of the company is in the hands of men well known in California travel circles. Poster Curry, until recently manager of Camp Curry, in the Yosemite National Park, is actively connected with the direction, and his associate, Wallace B. Curtis, will be resident manager in Los Angeles, J. E. Thompson, well known in local hotel, auto and financial circles, is business manager, and his brother, R. S. Thompson, a flyer of long experience, and for two years a U.S. Army flying instructor, will have charge of pilots, ships and equipment. It will of course be advisable to make reservations in advance for transportation. REAL SERVICE for your car’s Starting, Lighting and Ignition System is offered here. VALLEY FIRED TO GET OIL FROM SHALE SYDNEY, Australia, March 25. An experiment by John Fell in the treatment of kerosene shale in the Wojgan valley, Blue Mountains, New South Wales, has led to a remarkable discovery which will have the effect, it is believed, of revolutionizing present methods of deriving oil from shale. Before the discovery oil was derived from the sale by distillation from retorts, a comparatively costly process. By the new method the shale itself is set fire to, thereby forming a natural retort which drives the oil out of the shale in gushes. In no country in the world has any body of shale been set fire to for treatment purposes before, so that the work done by retorts after great expense in mining will for the future be performed by nature. "Gear shifting always has been a bug-a-bear to women drivers, but in the car of today gears can be shifted while negotiating a hill upward or downward without fighting them, and can be changed from one speed to another under all conditions without going through a third speed. Another detail worthy of notice, and which, I believe, is an exclusive Reo feature, is the accessibility of the side curtains; the fact that they are always kept flat and safe from being broken or torn, while at the same time ever ready to be attached easily, if it starts to rain, or if a hard wind should come up while on a long motor trip. "Easy tire changing, a low set spare tire rack, and extremely flexible throttle control are all features that appeal with special force to the woman motorist." 30x3 $7.85 30x3½ $9.25 Have you been into see us yet?
