Pope. There is more religion in gladness than in sadness. Investment in a get-rich-quick scheme brings get-disillusioned-soon results. Children should be brought up in habits of politeness and thoughtful consideration for others. Give your best thought and energy to the work in which you are engaged. That way lies success. Any member of Congress would be for the bonus provided somebody would assume the bonus for increasing taxes. Better 6, 7 or 8 per cent on one's money and safety, than the get-rich-quick promise of fabulous returns on one's investment. It seems impossible to keep the soldiers bonus question out of partisan politics—more's the pity. It should not be made a political issue. ECONOMIC CONFERENCE VIEWED ASKANCE Europe needs an economic concert. It needs a practical, well-defined system of co-operation to bring about economic normality. It needs to bury its prejudices, assuage its war fevers, reduce its armaments and get down to bedrock in retrenchment, then cooperate helpfully in rebuilding its shattered economic structure. The United States cannot do for Europe, as to these things, what Europe manifestly must and should do for itself. This country should not be expected to step into the breach and bear the burdens that a supine Europe would fail to bear for itself. An economic conference in Europe, at the proper time and held in the proper spirit, unquestionably would be beneficial. But serious question has arisen as to whether or not the Genoa conference holds any promise of real, substantial good. The government of the United States does not want to sponsor or to participate in a conference foredoomed to failure because of lack of preparedness or lack of good faith on the part of all or part of the nations taking part in the conference. This is for Europe to work out for itself. The United States, however, is sympathetic toward any bona fide plan that really promises economic betterment for Europe. Abraham Lincoln was the architect of his own character. But God helped him to an immortal career by flinging him into the midst of a great national crisis and imposing upon him superman responsibilities. COMMENTS OF THE PRESS EDITORS ARE SAYING COMMENTS OF THE PRESS EDITORS ARE SAYING CALIFORNIA FIRE LOSSES Riverside (Cal.) Press. A million dollar loss to timber range and grain was California's tribute to the fire demon during the past season, according to the annual fire report issued by the United States forest service and the California state board of forestry. The report states that 2245 fires were handled by the federal government and state organization. Information secured by these bureaus shows that in addition 293 grain fires burned within the state. The alarming and disconcerting fact that 90 per cent of these fires resulted thru carelessness and negligence of men, the officials of these bureaus state, deserves the serious attention of all Californians, particularly when the statistics indicate that 745 of these fires are directly chargeable to campers and smokers. As travel along the highways and in our mountains increases the public must exercise greater care with fire if our resources are not to suffer irreparable loss. The report shows that the losses were made up of the following: Timber $67,851,000; range $367,243,000; improvements $186,738,000; and hay and grain $370,506,000. The fire bill is further augmented by an item of $175,000.00 spent for fighting these fires. Six hundred state and federal offices are engaged in the difficult task of controlling the fires in California's forests and on the watersheds. WOMAN'S RULE A historian says that women ruled the world 2500 years before the birth of Christ. They also have ruled it 1921 years since. —Charleston Gazette. POSTAL SAVINGS BETTERMENT Santa Ana (Cal.) Register The promised plans for improving the postal savings service are well under way, and soon legislation is expected to make the plans effective. Under a bill which has been proposed the interest rate on postal deposits will be increased from two per cent to three. The maximum allowed a single depositor is to be raised to $3000. Depository offices are to be increased; trust and joint accounts accepted. Circulars and notices in foreign languages will acquaint the immigrant population with this form of saving. Interest will be paid on deposits held less than a year, and a finger print system of identification installed for the illiterate. In encouraging postal deposits thru more favorable regulations it is not intended to put the post office in competition with the banks. Mr Hayes explains that the idea is to create new depositors among people not yet educated to trust in private banking institutions. The post office reaches mong citizens to whom banks and banking are little known. It is largely from these ranks that the financial dupes and objects of mean thievery are to be found. In encouraging these people to save and keep their money in safer and more profitable places than the sock, the mattress and the old trunk, the postoffice department can perform a very actual service. Can It Stand More? Motor transportation pays over $300,000,000 in special taxes annually. The Ways and Means Committee bonus tax proposals would add $120,000,000 more in gasoline and horsepower levies. Motor car and motor truck owners are protesting to Washington that they should not be called upon to pay one-third of the bonus cost, which, if voted, should be paid by a general tax bearing equitably upon all. The only medicine that will cure trouble is plain work. One friend in hand is worth dozen acquaintances in the bush. Headaches keep more folks away from church than from the movies." LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE The Plain Dealer: In order that the action taken at the Yorba-Richfield-Anaheim flood control meeting last Friday night be clearly understood I desire to state all interested the following: After a long, earnest discussion of the whole project it was decided by unanimous vote to add to the work previously agreed upon that section lying between the new Golden State bridge and the Santa Fe bridge at Olive. This was done on the recommendation and motion of Mr. Le Roy Lyons, who said the ranchers immediately west of the Santa Fe tracks feared the back water here may rush over or break through the R.R. grade here and especially damage this particular section, as well as flooding all west of them in the proposed district. It was also voted unanimously, excepting one man, to allow $5.00 per acre on the easterly 570 acres, including the land of Mr. Halliday above the bridge, to be expended above the Yorba bridge and cast of the Yorba church. The dissenting voter stated that he would not be bound by the action of the meeting, but after talking it over with the people interested with him, decided to come in, and has subscribed his full quota. I am told. The addition of these two sections of protection will add to the strength of the whole plan and also add a further feeling of security to those living in these certain sections. You have acreage and resources enough in the proposed district to raise the money with which to do all the work. The outlook is very encouraging. Let us go and get the money. A. A. MILLS HITE HIM, SOMEONE Night Owl—"Set the alarm" for two, will you? Room-mate—You and who else?—Business Envelopes. For Citrus Grower (From Citrus Leaves) If you keep an accurate account of your yields in loose and packed boxes, as well as other important items, your bank will be in a position to give you credit when you need it. You must first be thoroughly familiar with your own business before a hard-headed business man is going to extend you banking privileges including loans. Citrus fruit trees stand lots of abuse, but the grower who succeeds is the one who is not afraid to put in a full day's work utilizing what good horse sense the Creator blessed him with. Just cast your eye over the lists of the growers rated as successes and you'll find that they have been hauling fertilizers when their less fortunate neighbor growers were dreaming. Dreaming is necessary for progress, but it never hurts to mix in a little elbow grease and effort. When you need an extra man or so for your picking, packing or general work, keep your attention on the ex-service men and give them a chance. Foreign citrus producing centers are rapidly increasing their output. This means greater competition for American growers, both in domestic and foreign markets. We must develop our hold on the American markets. It is not a matter of legislation, but education. Pure orange and lemon juices will not fulfill their part in the citrus industry until we secure legislation compelling synthetic juice producers to be so labeled as to inform the public that such concoctions are merely substitutes. During the last legislature a bill directed towards this end met ignominious defeat by being shelved with the committee on public morals. How long will we permit foreign capital to come in under our very eyes and take away the profits from this potentially lucrative end of the industry? Village Gossip The penny weighing machine owners has run up the white flag. George McPhee, county sealer of weights and measures has captured their forts and has run up the banner of victory. These facts became known here today when McPhee exhibited a letter from George W. Pierson; manager of the Pacific Peerless Weighing Machine corporation, Los Angeles. "I thought it might be well to drop you a line to say that if you desire, Mr. Anderson can come to Santa Ana any time now, to go over the scales with you," read Pierson's letter. "Will say," the communication continued, "that Mr. Daniels is due to make his regular trip through Orange county the latter part of February and will at that time, of course, see that all our scales are weighing correctly." "We will, of course, suit your pleasure in the matter." The letter closes with "kindest regards." "My, what changes time does bring," McPhee murmured, reminiscently as he perused the letter, which he received late last week. The remark was not without reason, considering that it was at no very remote date that the Pacific Peerless Weighing Machine corporation arose in its wrath to crush the Orange county official who dared hang a red condemnation tag upon its penny weighers. The letter not only recalls the spirited campaign which McPhee conducted in establishing a new precedent, that of classing the penny weighing machines as commercial scales and requiring them to give accurate weight, but also denotes the complete success of his fight. It was a new idea, never before suggested in the state, that McPhee introduced when he started out on an inspection of the penny machines and condemned six out of seven as inaccurate on his first day's work. There was a storm of protest from commodity, namely weight, they were a commercial scale; and since they collected money for weight they should give weight. He had found that many of the machines were inaccurate to the extent of 8 or 10 pounds. He continued condemning inaccurate machines and was upheld by the state department. Consequently the changed tone of the letter above quoted. Similar letters have been received from other concerns that build and operate such scales. ODD AND INTERESTING In New York City there are more Jews than there are in Asia, Africa, South America, Australia, and Great Britain combined. The Leaning Buddha is a Chinese rival of the tower of Pisa. This twelfth-century pagoda, near Nanking, is 100 feet high, of 13 stories, and inclines 12 feet from the perpendicular. As a result of recent earthquakes in Chili, large mountains in the Andes range sank an average of 160 feet, a sufficient distance to disclose peaks beyond that had been hidden from sight. Whaleskin is so thick that it can be split into several layers, each as stout as ox-hide, and it is excellent for making boots, bags, harness, or belting. The usefulness of the whale in this respect is not confined to his outer skin. The stomach furnishes a leather as soft and as strong as the best kid. Another important thing about the whale is that the whole of his skin is good. The skins of cows, horses, and other land animals furnishes a comparatively small quantity of leather, for only certain portions of the hide are of the right quality.
