SOME CONFUSIONS ABOUT CONVERSION "Current Confusions Concerning Conversion," was the sermon topic of Dr. James Allen Geislinger at the White Temple Sunday morning, Mat. 18:1-4. He said in part: The aim of Christianity is the regeneration and sanctification of human life by the power of God's spirit upon it. It seeks to completely convert life from selfishness to a devotion to God and man. It deals with the heart, the inner spirit of man and the entire re-constitution of his life. No other religion, no philosophy or cult is so radical, too many of these latter do turn the seeker into an adherent. But wherever we find genuine Christianity we find it bringing about resurrections and inner revolutions, whether it is working in the heart of Augustine, Luther, Wesley, Booth, Phillips Brooks or Henry M. Stanley. Jesus says: "Except ye be converted and become as little children ye shall not enter the kingdom of heaven." He saw men lost and set out to save them. To give direction to their lives, to bring them into usefulness and to lift them to higher levels of life. No man is what he ought to be until he takes up his life as a child of God and lives in the filial spirit. The record of change with Zaccheus, the Samaritan Woman, Nicodemus, Saul of Tarsus or Simon Peter is always the same. Now if we do not fail to preach this doctrine of conversion we are very likely at least to get ourselves confused about it and render it of little avail by our blundering. We are dealing here with mystery that transcends the power of the reason to comprehend but there is no more mystery than there is about any kind of life and there is no occasion for confusion. Conversion has its human and its divine side. On the human side we are to repent of our sins, that is put them away, repudiate them utterly and turn to Christ with the humility, sincerity and teachableness of a little child. We are to commit our lives to his keeping. We go to him with a faith that centures all upon his power to save. That is all we can do. But this is by no means all of Christianity. When we come to Christ in this spirit we are changed by the power of God upon our lives. A religion that we cannot discover and that our friends cannot discover is not worth having. We may not comprehend just how our lives are changed but we may know and shall know that they are changed. We turn a button and the lamp burns. We know that an electrical current is working. HARRY E. MAY ABANDON ALL PHILIPPINE DEFENSE WASHINGTON, Feb. 20—Passage of the recent treaty at Washington may result in the abandonment of all defenses in the Philippines even before the ratification of the treaty, it is said here. WORLD'S COAL PRODUCTION The world's production of coal in 1921 was 1,100,000,000 metric tons, or 200,000,000 tons less than in 1920. Center, Phone Ananeim, 239. We know that an electrical current is working and sending forth its blazing light. We may know when God's love is transfiguring a life even tho we may not be able to explain all the mystery of the divine power at work. Now there are several practical truths that emerge at once. There are those who say as soon as conversion is mentioned: "I cannot recall the time or place where I was converted." There is nothing strange about that. You cannot recall the time and place of physical birth. The thing you can know is whether or not your heart is set resolutely to obey and love God. Many of the noblest saints who have ever served in the kingdom of God never could tell when or where they began the life. That is not important. It is important to know whether or not now you are living the life. We ask about our children: "Must they too be converted?" They must give their hearts to Christ in full and complete trustfulness. Did Jesus mean, when he spoke WORLD'S COAL PRODUCTION The world's production of coal in 1921 was 1,100,000,000 metric tons, or 200,000,000 tons less than in 1920. France and Germany are the only nations showing an increased production. with Nicodemus that all men must be born again? Yes, no man can live his life apart from the help of God.* He may eke out an existence but not live as a son. Should we any longer believe in sudden and definite conversions? Yes and expect them. They are occurring right along. We do not expect them enough. Any ministry that is not blessed with sudden and radical changes for the better on the part of those waiting upon it is a deficient ministry and it is folly to question these swift changes. On the other hand it is equally foolish for people with these definite and dramatic experiences to question those who have not had them. We read that Saul was smitten down instantly and changed utterly on the road to Damascus. We have no such record of John. But these definite conversions are not to be valued above all others nor are thy to-be discredited. Th supreme need is that our hearts shall be before God as the heart of a little child that he may work the miracle of his transforming grace in us. High School News The student body had the privilege this morning of listening to an address by Mr. Walton, of the anti-ci-garet society. Mr. Walton gave an urgent appeal for boys of the grammar and high school ages to not smoke. He also stated that if the big boys must smoke to go behind the fence so the little fellow can't see him, Mr. Walton is a well-known lecturer and is familiar to Anaheim upper classmen.
