THE REMORSE OF RAMONA
A Tale of Two Women In Three Parts
(By Earl R. Abbey)
SCENE I
The old girl lay in her dilapidated bunk on the third floor of the A-1 lodging house. She was near death's door; in fact she was next door. Her breathing was a wheeze—she was that near gone. One could see by her chisel-like visage that she had been educated. Not a wrinkle creased her dissipated features; only by her glassy eyes could one tell that she had shimmled jellylike over the floor of time.
The room was as bare as the old girl's life had been dark. A crust of bread leaned lazily against an empty glass streaked with the remnants of a month-old content of milk. On the floor there was nothing but crunched cigarette snips, making the carpet a rich Turkish mixture. Outside all was quiet, but for the occasional passing of the patrol wagon.
SCENE II
Suddenly, whistling "When the Sun Sets in Old Town," the daughter pounded into the death chamber. She would have slammed the door, but there was none. The sufferer wheezed a sigh of relief. She had evidently expected the newcomer. Propping herself upon a sharp elbow, she spoke in a hard elder whisper.
Kate, I gotta tell you all—the secret of my life. I'm about to make eight o'clock." With a scrawny hand she pointed to the left hand corner of the room. "Lift the board up, Katie, and bring the stocking."
This done, she took it tenderly in her hands and stroked its sheeny texture. Tears of salt fell upon it. She seemed to be living that moment in the past.
"It's a thing of years ago, Kate. See the roll at the top? That's the way queens were am then."
Kate gasped with surprise but came back. From the toe of the hose the Old Girl brought forth a frayed and much faded blue book. Slowly she smoothed it out and handed it to Kate.

Rock-a-bye-baby, on the tree top.
When you grow up we'll make you a cop.
Joe Farrell!
Little Baby Wright was told by the nurse that a stork had come in the night and left her a little baby brother, and she was asked if she did not wish to see him.
"I don't care nothing about the baby," she said, "but I would like to see the stork."
Bill Blattner—How do the city people spend their evening, Barney?
Barney Hartfield (Just returned from the city)—Wal, the chorus girls put on a show for the tired business men, and then the business men put on a party for the tired chorus girls.
Girl—Do you know I find it ever

"It’s a thing of years ago, Kate. See the roll at the top? That’s the way queens wore them."
Kate gasped with surprise but came back. From the toe of the hose the Old Girl brought forth a frayed and much faded blue book. Slowly she smoothed it out and handed it to Kate.
"Read," she gurgled. "The end is near." Kate stopped chewing and read in a shrill voice:
"My Dearest Gwendoleen;
'My own sweet tooth, I have not the time to bid you goodbye. Our little love affair must diease. Give me back my plu. I love another.'
Your Has-been.
'SQUIRT.'
SCENE III
The Old Girl was now barely breathing. The end was in sight.
"K—K—K—Kate, I was a charming co-ed years ago, the murmured. 'I loved him. He did me dirt. I have nothing but my education left. Go back for him and give him back his pin.'
She handed Kate a Star chewing tobacco tag; and with a final gurgle, passed into a land forever as fresh as daw on a Dilatle.
Bill Blatter—How do the city people spend their evening, Barney?
Barney Hartfield (Just returned from the city)—Wal, the chorus girls put on a show for the tired business men, and then the business men put on a party for the tired chorus girls.
Girl—Do you know, I find it ever so much colder here than it is back home. There I wore light garments all winter, but since coming here I have to put on heavy flannels. I'm from Arizona; you know.
Clem Staples—Is that so? Well, I'm from Missouri.
There was a young lady named Banker
Who slept while the ship was at anchor;
She awoke in dismay.
When she heard the mate say:
"Now, lift up the top sheet and spanker."
If two red lips were upturned to your own.
With no one to gossip about it,
Would you pray for endurance to let them alone?
Maybe you would, but I doubt it!
Horace Benjamin.
The mystery has been solved. Constable Wood after a life-long subterranean search discovers convincing evidence revealing the high spirits which exist between Harry Ray and one "Jiggs" McFadden.

And said, "Wee little cat."
And they buried his clothes out of pity.
The above verse was written by Joe Wagner.

Dug out of the family closet for the Elk Show message.
