ONGE-CO HARBOR
SEEKING TONNAGE
With the possibility of Orange-co harbor at Newport Beach being open to water traffic by the first of next May or June, the Orange-co Harbor Assn. is taking energetic steps to develop business for the seaport and has a number of industrial projects under consideration, R. L. Blisby, secretary of the association, stated today.
Development of tonnage for vessels plying in and out of the harbor is one of the first essentials to success of the enterprise, in that it will attract attention of congress to the point of offering financial assistance in increasing the facilities and enlarging the channel and anchorage, in the opinion of Bisby, and D. Eymann Huff, president of the association.
The association embraces in its membership some of the most active-of public spirited men in Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The enthusiasm of Riverside and San Bernardino men of big affairs over the prospects of developing a big Orange county and Southern California asset at Newport being one of the most encouraging features in connection with the development of the seaport.
"We are in correspondence with a number of firms that are interested in the institution of industrials at the harbor," said Bisby. "We hope to be successful in our endeavors, and believe we will be. I believe that we can show manufacturing concerns many features at Newport that do not obtain in other harbors, features that offer great advantages and make the site attractive."

RED CROSS AIDS IN RESTORING CHILD
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 24.—Little Helen Magwell, six year old daughter of Fred Maxwell, who lost his life in the World War, is being sought by her mother, Mrs. Maxwell, better known as Madame Olga, a Brazilian fortune teller. During a period of illness in Salt Lake City, Utah, last June, Mrs. Maxwell sent her little daughter with her brother, George Stero, and his wife who were camping along the way to California. Since then, Mrs. Maxwell has not been able to locate either her child or her brother, and she called upon the Red Cross for assistance.
Anyone knowing of a gypsy camp would do a favor to the mother by carrying a message of her inquiry to it. Information concerning the missing child may be sent to Pacific Division headquarters of the American Red Cross, Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, Calif., and it will be forwarded to the mother.

Rattling of loose automobile tire chains can be prevented by recently patented coiled springs to take up their slack.
of construction work that has been done in Orange county in recent years was the creation of the Santa Ana river drainage outlet between Newport and Huntington Beach, according to a statement today by J. A. Beek, harbor master at Newport Beach. Beek, who has been a close observer of the results of the storm which started Saturday, declared that Newport has profited unnecessarily by this improvement.
"Heretofore Newport Bay had received an enormous amount of debris from the Santa Ana river," said Beek, "and I have seen the time when the harbor was almost completely filled with rubbish," he said.

TOO EXPENSIVE TO GET MAN FROM N. Y.
Too expensive.
These two words tell the reason why Fred McMorris, arrested some time ago at Woodbury, N. J., will not be brought back to So. Calif. to face prosecution for transactions of an asserted shady nature in bank drafts; transactions which involved a sum of $1200.
The words express a policy of the district attorney's office not to expend public money in a wild goose chase. It applies not only to the case of McMorris—in fact might not apply at all to his case—but to all cases where a prosecution might be considered doubtful of success and the expenditure wasted.
As a notable example, stands the case of B. Thorsen, arrested some weeks ago at Seattle after a Fullerton bank had accused him of embezzling an automobile left in his custody as bailiee. In the opinion of District Attorney Nelson there was strong doubt of successful prosecution and he decided not to send for Thorsen. The man, who was prepared vigorously to contest the charge, is now at liberty on a writ of habaes corpus secured by his attorneys in Seattle.
In a case where the proof seems conclusive the policy does not apply, but otherwise the county's money will not be used in providing transportation for prisoners who would probably go free. It would not be fair—either to the county or to the accused, Nelson believes.
The matter of guilt or innocence in the case of McMorris does not enter so much into the situation as the matter of expense, which would be prohibitive. In this connection, the authorities believe that McMorris purposely arranged his operations with that idea in mind.

MAKING VINEGAR FROM CULL FRUIT
Here's a story with a little bitterness in it, so to speak.
Why?
Because it concerns vinegar—orange vinegar.
Is there such a thing as orange vinegar, you ask?
Certainly. It is turned out at San Dimas, at the plant of the Exchange Products company, a citrus growers' organization, formed for the purpose of working out ways and means of saving the lower grade oranges and otherwise unsalable sizes of oranges.
C. H. Ripple, secretary of the company, who was a visitor here the other day, told all about it.
Of seven or eight distinctly orange products now being developed, one is orange vinegar.
The method of manufacturing this product was carefully worked out by the United States department of agriculture in its research laboratory. Los Angeles.
The government formula is the one that the San Dimas plant is using. The plant turns out the vinegar in about five days from the time the juice is extracted from the oranges.
"In point of cleanliness, orange vinegar is particularly outstanding." Ripple explained. "It would be quite difficult to make vinegar from other low grade fruits that would compare favorably in cleanliness with orange vinegar, and, further, on account of the fact that oranges contain about one per cent of citric acid, which goes through the vinegar process unchanged, approximately 20 per cent of the total acidity in orange vinegar is citric acid, which is the acid found in oranges and lemons."
"This gives orange vinegar its own peculiar flavor which makes it highly desirable as a salad vinegar. The product is meeting with very great favor for that purpose."
"It would seem that all orange growers would be interested in this product, not only because of its actual merit but because it is made from their own fruit and because the success of its sale will help solve the problem of saving the lower grades which have in the past been lost. Orange vinegar can be obtained from any retailer for it is now possible."

PARIS STREET NAMES MAY BE REVISED
PARIS, Dec. 27.—If certain municipal councillors have their way a committee will be intrusted with the herculean task of finding new names for about 6,000 streets and avenues.
There are many street names nearly alike, causing much confusion and loss of time.
Taxi drivers are constantly taking people to the Rue Blot and instead of the Rue Buot, for instance or to the Rue Bardinet instead of the Rue Cardinet.
It is most annoying to look for the Quai d'Orleans in the semi-suburban quarter of Montrouge, where the well known Avenue d'Orleans is, and find that the qual of that name is more than two mile away.
SCIENTIST BRAULEY SCORNS PENSION
PARIS, Dec. 27.—Prof. Edouard Branly, the venerable savant, has refused the French government's offer to make him an annual allowance of 20,000 francs, which would have assured him a living and helped to meet his heavy expenses in connection with his laborator research work.
He explains that to accept the subvention would make it seem that he considers himself an equal of such men as Pasteur or Lamartine, whereas he aspires to be only an humble disciple and searcher.
Despite his great age (his first scientific work was published in 1869), besides experimental work in the Catholic institute laboratores, M. Branly lectures there daily and gives medical services free to many poor patients.
