OIL MAKES BIGGEST DIFFERENCE IN CAR
Very often you hear of startling differences between cars of the same make, the same model, and purchased at practically the same time. And, as often as such a case comes to your attention, you will most likely be given to understand that So-and-so "got a lemon."
In nine cases out of ten, however, if the full truth were known, it would be discovered that the lemon in the case was really the outcome of poor treatment on the part of the owner or driver. To be more specific, the trouble with most cars that grow old before their time is largely due to poor or improper lubrication.
California's largest automobile distributor recently made the statement that it has been his experience that the cars that come to grief are, in the majority of cases, the victims of misuse in regard to lubrication.
Motor car dealers are recommending Pennzoil in the 10-gallon Handitank to their patrons because this pure Pennsylvania parafine-base product means actual protection to every car they sell and the Handitank insures a proper grade of oil at the start of every trip.
The Pennzoil people introduced the Handitank because, after considerable experimenting, they found that the ten-gallon capacity insured a year's supply of lubrication for the majority of car owners and, besides, the quantity was large enough to permit a bulk price per gallon that was greatly below the cost when bought a quart at a time.
Automobile distributors and agencies all over the Southwest supply Pennzoil in the Handitank in the exact grade best suited to the car they sell. They are actively combating the creation of "lemons" by safeguarding their customers' lubrication.

GERMANY THINKS 'WE SHOULD WORRY'
WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 — Germany, stripped off her own armaments, is worrying little as to whether or not the Washington disarmament conference succeeds in striping other nations of theirs.
That is to say, the man in the street knows little about the conference, for the German daily press has carried only brief, unclear notice of the preparations for this momentous session, and he fails to realize just where the meeting can affect him.
On the otter hand, thinking men of Germany welcome the conference, for they feel that it can perhaps reach some agreement whereby Germany will not be under the oppressive and disturbing influence of French militarism. Such men contend that Germany would be able better to pay her obligations if she were not constantly threatened with new penalties by an army to the west whose upbuilding has been considerable in the past two years.
ENCLOSED MOTORS ARE MORE POPULAR
It used to be considered a mark of old age, invalidism or riches, to own an enclosed motor car, but according to Harry D. Riley, local distributor of the Studebaker line, this idea has been shuffled into the discard for now everybody is doing it.
It used to take a lot of big round iron men to own a coupe or a sendan and limousines were reserved for oil magnates, chorus girls and movie queens, but today you will find hundreds of traveling salesmen spinning along the highways in closed motor carriages.
The adoption of the closed car idea by business and professional men was a recognition of the added comfort that such cars give in all kinds of weather. Automobile dealers have known this desirable feature of closed cars for years but it took quite a while for the motoring public to become fully alive to their advantages.
Now closed cars sell all of the year round when it used to be that the
FRANKLIN TOURING
LIMOUSINE READY
The Franklin factory certainly steps along when it comes to hurling bombshells. Here is the latest—the Franklin touring limousine. This is a four-door enclosed car with either one or two compartments and adaptable for either owner or chauffeur driving. When the car is chafer driven the seclusion of passengers is made quite complete by the glass partition at the back of the front seat, and for communication with the driver a speaking tube is provided.
The partition is conveniently arranged for the comfort of the front seat passengers; the panel can be pushed to one side, making relations of all passengers quite companionable. On the other hand, the wide window panels can be removed if desired, making the body into one compartment suitable for family parties. This change, facilitated by practically ratite-proof partition locks can be made in a few moments.
Unusual roominess has also been provided by the design of the super-body, and while care has been taken to provide ample head room, the root rail is attractively low. The car is finished in the fashionable Franklin gray with black enamel fenders.
The touring limousine is admirably suited for either city driving or long country tours. It is airy, well ventilated and has a fine outlook. It embodies the same fundamental Franklin principles of light weight and flexibility as other Franklin types and accordingly has the comfort and road-going and road-holding qualities which have distinguished other Franklin enclosed cars.
Members of the Bob White Co., local dealers are certainly pleased with the latest addition to the Franklin line to reduce the repair work prices 20 per cent.
"As battery repair work is done almost entirely on contract, the ignition men have been able to make a reduction by reason of lower costs of materials," state the Weits.
NASH ENDS LAST
MONTH OVERSOLD
As a reflection of business conditions nationally the Nash Motors Co. has again ended last month in an oversold condition, according to advice received here by A. A. May, of the May Motor Co., Orange county dealer.
The demand for Nash cars followed immediately the price reduction recently and has continued since that magnates, chorus girls and movie queens, but today you will find hundreds of traveling salesmen spinning along the highways in closed motor carriages.
The adoption of the closed car idea by business and professional men was a recognition of the added comfort that such cars give in all kinds of weather. Automobile dealers have known this desirable feature of closed cars for years but it took quite a while for the motoring public to become fully alive to their advantages.
Now closed cars sell all of the year round when it used to be that the eastern states sold them in the winter months in limited quantities with a few sold in California for such persons as have been mentioned above.
The super-critical motorist who wants quietness and smoothness, has fought shy of closed cars for the only models that tempted him were of the highest priced class and beyond the means of all but a limited number, but now with improved engineering a moderate priced carriage can be had that has all of the smoothness and quietness desired.
In commenting on the largely increased demand for Studebaker enclosed cars, Harry D. Riley said that the popularity of the Studebaker was due, not alone to fine coach work, but largely to the fact that the famous Studebaker "L" head motor was so quiet and smooth in operation that there was no noise for the enclosed body to magnify. This rare combination in a car of moderate price is the reason he gives for Studebaker popularity.

As a reflection of business conditions nationally the Nash Motors Co. has again ended last month in an oversold condition, according to advice received here by A. A. May, of the May Motor Co., Orange county dealer.
The demand for Nash cars followed immediately the price reduction recently and has continued since that time. Both the Milwaukee and Kenosha plants of the company are making every effort consistent with high standards to catch up to the demand, but orders on the books are 50 per cent in excess of production, indications point to an unusually busy fall season, not only with the Troy Motor Sales Co., but at practically all Nash distributing points.
“There is just one reason, in my opinion, for the demand for Nash cars in its present proportions,” said May. “The buying public in a market such as this naturally turns to that product in which it has confidence. I am stating no secret when say that since the very day it was established the Nash Motors Co. set out deliberately to win confidence in itself and its product.”

The members of the Priscilla club conducted their regular business meeting at the home of Mrs. J. Hill yesterday afternoon. A special luncheon had been planned, but as their president, Mrs. E. T. MAKE REDUCTION ON BATTERY REPAIRS
The West Bros., of the Auto Electric Maintenance Co., Orange-co dealers for the Vesta battery, announce a general reduction of prices on battery repair work and today battery owners can have such work done for 20-pet. less than they had to pay prior to Nov. 1. The reduction is effective only on battery repairs and does not apply to magneto and other ignition work.

It doesn't sound reasonable, but it actually happened! Here's Charley Tharsing, veteran salesman for the Howard Auto Co., demonstrating that a 1922 Buick can be shifted from low to high, and back again, with a number two silk thread tied to the shift lever.
That the Buick has the easiest gear shift in the world has long been the claim of Wm. Goodrum, manager of the Anaheim Auto Co., local dealers, and recent tests made by the Howard Auto Co., seem to conclusively prove this contention.
Charley Tharsing, one of the veteran Buick salesmen, has taken a thin silk thread, tied one end of it to the gear shift lever and with a gentle tug without breaking the thread, shifted the gears.
Inasmuch as it does not take very much of a strain to break a number two silk thread this is a very striking demonstration of the ease with which Buick gears can be shifted on the new models, and would seem to exceed the Buick's claim that they have what has been termed a "one finger" gear shift, meaning, of course, that the Buick gears can be shifted thru the different speeds with only one finger on the lever.
The gear shift on the new Buicks is virtually an integral part of the transmission, and is part of the unit which includes the Buick double shell universal joint, which is oiled automatically from the transmission.
The importance of easy gear shifting in conjunction with a smooth acting clutch cannot be over estimated. In fact, difficulty in gear shifting has been the cause of many persons who otherwise could handle an automobile with ease, refraining from attempting to drive.
Buick engineers, recognizing this fact, expended many months of research work and thousands of dollars in perfecting this latest type of clutch and transmission. Since the arrival of the new Buicks equipped with these latest features, the Howard Auto Co. has conducted a series of experiments conceived to demonstrate just how easy it is to operate the new cars.
This silk thread stunt is certainly

Hundreds of Essex owners report service upward of with incredibly small repair costs, and with a long further reliable service. Performances as its four-time conquest of the trans-ord, and the 50-hour record of 3037 miles signify that both design and construction never before right car field.

Cost with such quality appeal to judicious buyers, are considering a car slightly less in cost, or have Essex quality in some much higher-priced car?

PRICE CUT BOOSTS
HUPMOBILE DEMAND
The great influx of orders that
followed the slashing reduction in
the price of the Hupmobile has practically cleaned up the entire stock of
all models that are on hand, and until another large shipment reaches
Southern California, all orders are
being taken subject to delays.
"The big price reduction has opladed to the popularity of the Hupmobile with all classes of motorists,
who know what is built into it and
who appreciate what a wonderful
value it is at the new figures now
quoted on it," said L. F. Pomeroy,
local distributor.
"It is now an ordinary occurrence

made long trips, particularly from
the middle west, and who have given
their car the hardest sort of grief, to

Word from the factory also tells of heavy Hupp buying in the east, which is usually not the case there at this time of the year.
