Saturday, November 12, 1921 WAR UPON RUNAWAY MOTOR SMASHERS War to the bitter end will be declared by county authorities throughout So. Calif., on the motorist who smashes into a fellow-driver and then runs away. Officials of the Auto Club of So. Calif. have risen up in arms against the criminal type of auto driver who is becoming too numerous on highways in this section, and the club has instigated action against him wherever possible. Now the time has come, points out the motoring organization, when drastic action must be taken in order to curb the further exploits of the man who runs down an innocent pedestrian or smashes into another car then "hints it away" from the scene of the accident as fast as gasoline will take him. A case in point is cited where a motorist having the right of way at a street intersection was run into by another autolist in the car which was run down there were three women, one of them holding a baby in her arms. The motorist who ran into this car was able to get away for a block, but the other car containing the woman and baby was not so badly damaged but what the driver could start in pursuit. He succeeded in catching the culprit, and now the case is to be prosecuted in Los Angeles to the fullest extent of the law. Section 21, of the State Motor Vehicle Act, makes it a felony for failure to stop after an accident and give an accounting. The punishment for running away is imprisonment in the state penitentiary for a period not to exceed five years, or one year in the county jail or by a fine not to exceed $5000, or both. The same penalty is provided for failure on the part of the offending motorist to give his correct name and address. Jazzy safety slogans to be scattered broadcast throughout the country wherever automobiles are owned and operated have just been drawn up by the recently established safety bureau of the Auto Club of So. Calif. Suggestions ror new slogans, with more "home brew kick" in them than "As the years go by there is an ever increasing demand for the enclosed car," states Frank P. Taggart, local dealer for the Chevrolet, "and while they are recognized as practical for all seasons of the year, their real comforts are best appreciated these camp disagreeable days and nights during the cool, rainy weather of approaching winter. It is true that here in Southern California we have none of the icy blasts of the eastern winters to contend with, but never-the-less, there are many times that it is most agreeable to find ourselves reclining comfortably on the easy cushions within luxurious interior of a sedan or coupe." "The weather of the past few days strongly suggests closed cars and we have received many inquiries regarding these models of the Chevrolet. Both the '490' and the 'FB' closed models represent the very best in the coach builders art, possessing all the features of luxury and individual comfort that is expected in these cars, hese, with the distinctions of mechanical superiority for which the Chevrolet is famed, offer everything that could be desired."
