Probation by courts, an instrument of mercy and character-saving if discreetly applied, may become an encouragement of criminality. It frequently is charged—with much evidence that the charge is merited—that the granting of probations is abused in this state and that the public is victimized oftentimes by persons let out on probation.
The world war put this state and the nation back fully ten years in housing accommodations. For, while building construction was halted for five years, population steadily was increasing and the needs of housing were growing. So with the slackness of building operations in the period since the Armistice, there is an accumulated deficiency in housing which is startling indeed. The shortage in housing applies not alone to residences, but to schools and even to business blocks. With all the building that possibly can be done everywhere, for an indefinite number of years to come, there can be no overbuilding.
Chicago's fake beggars ride in taxicabs. Those who impersonate crippled world war veterans gather in the greatest sums. This reflects the splendid generosity of "the man in the street" who, unfortunately does not take the time or trouble to look into the credentials of those who importune him for alms. It reflects, on the other hand, the most despicable and depraved form of fraudulence on the part of the beggars. That monstrous swindling should be broken up and the perpetrators should go to prison on stiff sentences.
RACE PROBLEM HAS MANY ANGLES IN U. S.
President Harding's frank discussion of the problems of the relations of the white and black races in this country has brought this question prominently before the people at this time. It always is a live question. It frequently crops out, in some form. As the negro advances in enlightenment and in capability for useful effort, and as the white man better understands the true nature of the negro race and the great struggles that negroes have had to make—and which they have made with credit to themselves—there is a more hopeful attitude between the thinking element of both races—an attitude that gives rise to the expectation that a better understanding may be effected, so that the two races may live side by side, each respecting the other and both working together in harmonious, co-operative spirit.
There never can be and never should be intermixture of races—and this applies as between the white race and other races than the negro. Amalgamation, racially, would be bad for both races thus attempting to blend.
There will be sympathetic interests among thoughtful, tolerant, humane white persons in the proposals set forth, from time to time, to encourage the negro in his efforts to better himself in education and in economic achievements. For neither race lives to itself alone. The white race is essential, in this country, to the welfare of the negro. And the negro, on his part, contributes vastly to the material progress of the Nation. The material interests of the two races interlock. Therefore, it is to the interest of each to promote the economic weal of the other.

LETTERS FROM PEOPLE—BOX HD ... MODERN WARS
The Plain Dealer;
During a life including much foreign travel I have observed that most people everywhere have a kindly feeling toward the peoples of other countries. But I have observed how propaganda—often of the most subtle description—has sometimes been directed against other nations and then suspicion is created toward other lands. Each nation next commences to emphasize the unjust actions of the other and forgets its own moral and political weaknesses. A hostile spirit is thus created.
It is openly known and charged from the most responsible European sources that these influences originate with men whose interests in some way or other are enhanced by promulgating international fears. We must expect this because both "preparedness" and war result in the hard-earned assets of the many going into the coffers of the few. The opinion once having been created that war is inevitable the rest is easy. Under such conditions governments yield to the pressure brot upon them. Real motives for the prospective conflict are hidden behind plausible excuses because nowadays you must have your great moral slogans to justify war. Next, "leaders of public opinion," who possibly had not approved of the threatened struggle but who do not wish to seem unpatriotic, join in the call to arms. Other citizens who had seen a better way are silenced. The governments, if strong enough, next apply conscription with its freedom destroying corollaries of espionage and censorship. The people, often for political reasons, are kept in the dark whilst their wealth and their boys—the best of the breed—are destroyed. Who gets the plums? Members of the noisy minority, and few others, get the plums. These plum-securing folks meanwhile are mostly safe in their offices or homes whilst "the boys" are sent to the slaughter. When the war is over and the moral and material effects are counted, mighty few people are satisfied. How worse than foolish we are!
What is a remedy? Knowledge is not sufficient. The only practical solution is obedience to the plain teachings of Christianity. And the peoples must let their respective governments know what they want. Now is our time. Write to the president!

CHRISTIANITY FINAL RELIGION FOR MAN
Yesterday morning at the Methodist White Temple, Dr. J. A. Geislinger spoke upon Hebrews 7:25, his subject being "He Is Able." He said in part:
"The epistle to the Hebrews is difficult for a modern man to understand. And that is due to the form of the argument the apostle was compelled to make.
"His fundamental position is that Christianity opens up a new and living way of fellowship with God through Christ. And that is modern enough.
"But this contention made it necessary for him to argue that Christianity was superior to every other religion including Judaism. So we read his words about Christ being superior to Aaron and Moses and the angels and take his argument as a matter of course. Not so his first readers. He was retiring the whole of Judaism — altars, priests, sacrifices, tabernacles, and temples. That was surely radical from the Jews' point of view and must have been altogether disturbing. Think what it would mean today if a man was to come among us and say that he believed in God and wanted everyone else to believe in God but to do so they would have to do away with churches and all of the machinery and institutionalism of Christianity. It would stir us considerably.
"And yet the apostle was right. Christianity is the supreme and final religion for it does bring men to God and that is what religions all have sought to do.
"No one can read the epistle to the Hebrews or this text without realizing that the author had come under the liberating power of Christianity. The New Testament makes it clear that Christ greatly moved the hearts of men and women when he was here upon earth. The sick, the lame, the ignorant, the poor, the sinful found in Him a Savior. Men who had felt that their lives were useless suddenly were stirred to hope and dared great things without hope and without God.
"But he did not come to remind people that they were lost but to help them to become saved. 'God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself.' John 3:16 gives us the gospel in epitome and it shows that Christ was here for but one purpose and that was to save men. He shall be called Jesus because He shall save His people from sin."
"Christianity is interested in everything human. So it cares for the bodies of man and builds hospitals. It is interested in music and literature and builds schools. It starts reforms and seeks to make the world a liveable place. But its great objective is sin. Its aim is to bring men back to God in patience and faith, obedience, salvation is its greatest word.
"What does salvation mean? What is it to be saved? It is to be reconciled to God and to be able to take up our lives as the children of God, delivered from the guilt and power of sin. It is to be lifted from the servility in which so many live into lordship over self and the world, mastery. The apostle says yet farther it is rest—the ability to live without care and anxiety in the comfort of faith. There remaineth a rest to the people of God.' Some do not enter into this rest but it is for every Christian. And finally, he says to be saved to be set free from the fear of death.
"But the apostle makes his statement most vigorously. Christ is able to save to the uttermost salvation? Much more than we can put in a few words. But at least a radical experience by which a man is made a new creature in Christ Jesus—his ambitions, purposes, desires, thots, hopes all dominated by Christ. It means a re-constitution of the inner life thru and thru. It means also that a man shall be saved all along the way so that he shall not be taken unawares or tempted above what he is able to bear. It means that he will be saved from his pet sin, whatever that is. Peter was afraid of people but God took that fear out of his heart and enabled him to face councils and courts and kings."

fluence of friends and by all manners of gentle and severe proferences. He ever seeketh those who shall come unto Him.
And the other words the appear places at the front of the text: He is able.' The abundant sufficiency of Christ for every humbrain strait.' Wherefore He is able at to save them to the uttermost come to God by Him, seeing ever liveth to make intercession them.'
No one can read the epistle to the Hebrews or this text without realizing that the author had come under the liberating power of Christianity. The New Testament makes it clear that Christ greatly moved the hearts of men and women when he was here upon earth. The sick, the lame, the ignorant, the poor, the sinful found in Him a Savior. Men who had felt that their lives were useless suddenly were stirred to hope and dared great things. Then His death on the cross at the time of the great feast when multitudes were in Jerusalem the capital of religion, created a great comotion. What must it have been when it became known that He was alive, had arisen and been seen by many? Then He went in and out among men for 40 days teaching and comforting them and organizing them for work. Pentecost shows how they had been moved. Three thousand joined the new movement in a body at one time. The apostle has felt this liberating power and is writing about it.
"What is his theme? What is the theme of Christianity? I answer—Salvation. Christianity knows no rich and poor, learned and unlearned, black and white but simply the lost and saved. If you read Luke 15 you will see that Jesus is trying to say that men and women get lost in all kinds of ways. He was impressed with the fact that few had any real faith in God and that the multitudes wandered about at least a radical experience by which a man is made a new creature in Christ Jesus — his ambitions, purposes, desires, thots, hopes all dominated by Christ. It means a re-constitution of the inner life thru and thru. It means also that a man shall be saved all along the way so that he shall not be taken unawares or tempted above what he is able to bear. It means that he will be saved from his pet sin, whatever that is. Peter was afraid of people but God took that fear out of his heart and enabled him to face councils and courts and kings. You may be stingy. God can save you from avarice. You may have a nasty tongue. Salvation is for tongues, also. You may have an unruly tongue. Christ can bridle that for you, too. You may have an unclean mind. But you can be made clean every whit. You may be dying of littleness and not be able to see any good in others but salvation will open your eyes and quicken your power of appreciation. But salvation is not a matter of now and of this life only but is for eternity. Are we not all born to die? And must not any true religion have a word for the hour and article of death?
There are two other words in this great text that throw light upon this uttermost salvation which is by Faith in Christ. Our salvation is assured because He ever mketh intercession for us. He is working this morning by making you recall your mother's prayers for you; by reminding you of the little one you have given back to Him; by the in-

HAPPILY MARRIED
REWARDS MINISTER
MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 31—If you are happily married, did it ever occur to you that the preacher who performed the ceremony should receive a little credit for "tying the knot securely?"
No doubt a Minneapolis man believes this to be true, according to a letter and $20 that the Rev. R. N. McKaig received the other day.
Just twenty years ago Mr. McKaig performed a simple wedding ceremony in Minneapolis. He had forgotten all about the couple until he received the letter. Then he had to search his records to make sure the letter and draft were not sent him by mistake.
The letter says that after twenty years of cruising on the sea of matrimony, the writer finds that his wife is more wonderful and a better woman than he ever dreamed she could be. For this the writer is thankful and upon the twentieth anniversary of their wedding the husband penned a letter to the Rev. Mr. McKraig and sent a dollar for each year of wedded life.

Studebaker experience in carriage building goes back for seventy years. The accumulated experience of hundreds of skilled workmen is available to Studebaker in building fine enclosed motor cars.
It would be a mistake to choose an enclosed motor carriage with a body of such quality as the Studebaker unless it is mounted on a chassis as reliable, as satisfactory in performance and as long-lived as the Studebaker Six.
We anticipated the usual winter shortage of fine enclosed cars and ordered early so we are able to make immediate delivery on some of the models, reasonably soon on others.
May we suggest that you can insure yourself comfortable travel in all kinds of weather if you will select one of the six enclosed models which Studebaker builds on SIX-cylinder chassis only.
