Monday, October 31, 1921 SPORTING EVENTS Anaheim Elks Defeat Gene Murphy’s 4 to 3 Anaheim Elks’ baseball team defeated the fast Gene Murphy’s of Los Angeles 4 to 2 yesterday afternoon at Commonwealth park in the last game of the season the athletes will play under the attired herd’s title. If there are other games, they will be independent of the Elks. The feature of the contest was the patching of McDonald of the Irish team who held the locals to four scattered hits. It wasn’t his fault that Anaheim won. On the few occasions his teams were required to field the ball, they didn’t know what to do with it. Three times they overthrew bases and failed to catch Anaheim runners. They did this twice in succession In the seventh inning, which with two walks, a sacrifice and a timely hit by Glenn Callan put three runs over. McDonald is a regular Ichabod Crane of the more pronounced Kentucky Wonder Bean variety, but for all his altitude he is as smooth in operation as Bobby Meusel. He sure had the locals swinging where they weren’t. Salveson, who started for the locals, kept the visitors hits well scattered until the fifth which ran something like this. Rose singled but was forced at second by Finley. Cummings was hit on the skin. Young fanned. McDonald intent on winning his own guee, got his second hit, a two-bagger, scoring Finley and Cummings. McDonald was hot home by Arviza’s single. Arviza was caught at second trying to stretch it. It was hot weather for baseball here and there were not many fans on hand indicating: SANTA ANA DEFEATS FULLERTON 7 TO 0 Santa Ana defeated Fullerton in the 1. It mustn’t be quite so warm if baseball is to prosper here. 2. The interest lags when there isn’t a league. If a local team was lined up with a snappy league, winter baseball would prove popular.
