DON'T BE CARELESS WITH YOUR BATTERY
"A properly made automobile storage battery will give good service either in the tropics or the Polar regions if accorded a little attention, says Mr. Cecil of the Automotive Electric Co. USL Service Station representative for this district. In calling attention to the carlessness of the average motorist with the battery on his car, he adds:
"Many car owners habitually pass up the service station, preferring to wait until something goes radically wrong with the storage battery. This is not the best policy to follow because, in many cases, the battery is liable to get out of commission while the car is touring afar in the country.
My experience is a USL Service man is that the great majority of automobile owners are profoundly careless with their batteries. They do not even know what's inside them. Their knowledge begins with keeping the plates covered by adding distilled water and ends with that. They haven't much more than a casual knowledge of the battery plates. How the plates work and how they are affected for good or ill by conditions existing not only inside the battery but also at outside points in the electrical system age things in which the owners could profitably interest themselves.
Another iconoclast has arisen, sardonically to question: Is there a Santa Claus? The answer is this: If there is a good, generous, happiness dismensing impulse in the world, yes, there is a Santa Claus!

AMAL. WILL ADD 3 PRODUCERS SHORTLY
Huntington Beach
The Amalgamated Oil Company has three wells that will be added to the list of producers in a few days. Preparations are being made to bring in Huntington 2-A drilled to 2690 feet. Border No. 2 is drilling out and that means that it will be producing soon. This well was cemented at 3246. Pearce No. 1 has stood the required time and is being opened up for a water test at 3653. Powler No. 1 and Huntington No. 3 are both flowing better than 300 barrels daily. Huntington No. 1-A is still held up with sand and is cleaning out.
The Argonaut Oil Company's Turley No. 1 is now one of the settled producers of the Huntington Beach field and is making 200 barrels daily. The Argonaut expects to start two new wells drilling this week. Riggling up work is completed on Turley No. 2 and Wilson No. 1. Johnson No. 1 is a rig.
Geo E. Cloud has an oil well. It only remains to get the rods and tubing in now and a gage on the tank to tell how much the new producer will do. Drilled to 2315 feet Cloud No. 1 appears to be as clean as a whistle and judging from the way the well is acting it will not be amiss to predict a three-or four hundred barrel producer.
On the Ashton lease the Eddistone Oil Corp. brought in No. 1 a 1000 barrel well several months ago. This producer settled to 250 barrels. A few weeks ago Ashton No. 2 came in and now is making within a few barrels of the same amount. The wells are 3500 feet deep. Ashton No. 33 is building rig. Huff No. 1 is drilling at 33450 in brown shale.
The Federal Consolidated No. 1 drilling at 2200 is in hard shale and builders and is showing some nice colors. Correlations with Miley No. 1 and Fidelity No. 1 are checking up nicely.
The General Petroleum's Community No. 1 cemented at 2930 failed to get a shut off and has been cemented.
E. J. Miley's No. 1 proved the eye open side of the field, getting a few days ago after it can come back Sand still menaces that till it can be thoroughly cleaned out no big problem expected, Miley No. 2 for the rotary.
That Miley-Keck right kind of a well tilt on by the fact that figures show gradually week ago this well was dredged barrels. It is no hundred and twenty-rigging up the rotator drilling at 2600 feet.No. 4 stands cemented at 2550 centering rigging up to spud in Petitfills Syndicate washing out and clearing past week and is now to production.Altho still bothers the well a couple hundred barry oil.

The Federal Consolidated No. 1 drilling at 2200 is in hard shale and boulders and is showing some nice colors. Correlations with Miley No. 1 and Fidelity No. 1 are checking up nicely.
The General Petroleum’s Community No. 1 cemented at 2930 failed to get a shut off and has been re-cemented.
Cemented at 2770 the Golden Dome Oil Company drilled out late last week and found that the water had not been shut off. The well is now being re-cemented.
With No. 2 recommended at 2315 and showing some $5 feet of oil sand the Gypsy Syndicate have hopes of entering the production list of Huntington Beach soon. No. 1 will be re-cemented at 2300 and it should be on production inside of a month. Nos. 3 and 4 are located in the vicinity of the big Miley well and much can now be expected from these wells on completion. No. 5 is staked near the General Petroleum’s Community No. 1.
Actual rigging up work is under way at the Huntington Midway Crude’s No. 1 to drill out the cement and bring the well in. The first cementing did not hold. Much development work is being held awaiting the outcome of the Huntington Midway Crude.
The Huntington Union Oil Company is building a rig for well No. 2. No. 1 is now drilling at 3125. The formation is brown shale with streaks of sand. On the whole the outlook for this well now appears rather good.
The cement was drilled out at Invadera No. 1 and it was found that the water had not been shut off. A second cementing will be made at once. The ten-inch was cemented at 2848.
The Sun Oil Co., is financed and persistent in producing well out to 2275 the well face account of sand. It down and washed with like it will have to be no. 1 stands cemented producing about 75 lbs.
The Standard Oil Co.’s record for new work at the beach port shows three wells the Huntington lease is started drilling. On a production estuary production is varying cleaning out at 2970 are standing cemented 2800 feet of hole. A-1900, and A-14 at 940.
On the Huntington 2 is bailing for a test B-4 at 2575. Hunting cleaning out at 2664 been located. E-1 is at 2525. E-2 is drilling the Bolsa property N-2570. Bolsa N-4 spills drilling. Jones Company been re-cemented. Suing up to start drill No. 1 is bailing for N-2745. Torrance No. 1 ed at 1455. Farmwork property to be dev standard, has been done.
An effort to make a regular producer hired for more than a result. It looks as the necessary to go a bit this one to make a bid.

E. J. Miley's No. 1, the well that proved the eye opener for the east side of the field, got up to 725 barrels a few days ago and proved that it can come back most any time. Sand still menaces the well and until it can be thoroughly washed and cleaned out no big production can be expected. Miley No. 2 is rigging up for the rotary.
That Miley-Keck No. 2 is the right kind of a well to have proven by the fact that the production figures show gradual increases. A week ago this well was doing a hundred barrels. It is now making a hundred and twenty-five. No. 1 is rigging up the rotary to resume drilling at 2600 feet. No. 3 is a rig. No. 4 stands cemented at 3575. No. 6 stands at 2550 cemented. No. 7 is rigging up to spud in the rotary.
Petitfills Syndicate No. 1 has been washing out and cleaning up for the past week and is now getting down to production. Although the sand still bothers the well looks good for a couple hundred barrels of 16 gravity oil.
The Petroleum Midway's Bray No. 1 drilled to 2800 feet started off a 75 barrel well and has increased its production to a hundred barrels. Columbia 2-1 stands cemented at 3113. Towers No. 1 is drilling in hard sand at 2200. Vollmer-Meyer No. 1 is drilling in shale at 3300 and No. 4 is standing cemented at 3275, 10, High School No. 1 is standing with the cement setting at 2347. Smythe No. 1 shows 2250 feet in sandy shale.
Rhodes Oil No. 2 drilled to 2370 feet, came in a 300 barrel well. No. 1 is drilling out the cement preparatory to making a water test. No. 3 (Eden) is drilling at 2200 feet and is in shale.
The Sun Oil Co. is making a continued and persistent effort to make a producing well out of No. 4. Drilled to 2275 the well failed to start on account of sand. It has been bailed down and washed with oil, and looks like it will have to be pumped. Sun No. 1 stands cemented and No..3 is producing about 75 barrels.
The Standard Oil Co.'s still holds the record for new development work at the beach. This week's report shows three wells starting. On the Huntington lease No. 14 and No. 15 started drilling. Huntington A-4 is on a production est at 3138 and the highest gravity well in the field is flowing through a Lorraine trap. The trap has steadied the flow of the well and is saving all the gas.
The United States Oil Corp. has drilled its No. 1 to 2660 and is running a core drill to prospect and test out for the appearance of an oil sand.
Development work on the Union Oil Co.'s Huntington Beach properties now include three wells. On the Newlands No. 2 is drilling at 700 feet. Copeland No. 3 is at 3300 trying for circulation. No. 5 Copeland is drilling in the shale at 3400 feet. Copeland No. 1 continues to make 200 barrels daily.

Union Seeking More Time
WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 — Organized labor is mobilizing its energies for a fight against the so-called American plan of the open shop employers.
The federation will plunge into an effort to get 1,000,000 new members as protest against wage cutting. Directed by Pres.Gompers, it will throw into the field a trained force of 5000 organizers to establish new unions.
Gompers, touring the country will attack wage-cutting employers and proponents of the open shop plan as the "autocrats of the industrial world," seeking to Prussianize American democracy. Enlistment of women workers in large numbers is one of the objects of the recruiting campaign.
Rare Water Sight
YOSEMITE, Sept. 16 — Visitors to Yosemite national park are viewing one of the rare sights to be seen here and nowhere else in the world—a waterfall blown backward and upward by the wind until the spray hangs above the edge of the cataract like a cloud.
This phenomenon can be seen at Bridal Veil falls on the way from the rail terminus at El Portal to Yosemite valley any afternoon, when a lively breeze is blowing. In spring the volume of water is too great, but in Indian summer the fall has that exquisite lace quality from which it took its American name, and the thin stream is vaporized before it has fallen many feet, the vapor being carried above the lip of the cataract until a change of wind sends it swirling downward again.

The Standard Oil Co. still holds the record for new development work at the beach. This week's report shows three wells starting. On the Huntington lease No. 14 and No. 15 started drilling. Huntington A-4 is on production est at 3138 and the production is varying widely. A-5 is cleaning out at 2970, A-7 and A-9 are standing cemented. A-12 shows 2800 feet of hole. A-13 is drilling at 2900, and A-14 at 945.
On the Huntington B-3 lease No. 2 is balling for a test at 3975, also B-4 at 2575. Huntington D-1 is cleaning out at 2664 and No. 2 has been located. E-1 is testing for water at 2525, E-2 is drilling at 2345. On the Bolsa property No. 3 stands at 2570. Bolsa No. 4 spudded in and is drilling. Jones Community No. 1 has been re-cemented. Surf No. 2 is rigging up to start drilling. Thompson No. 1 is balling for a water test at 2745. Torrance No. 1 stands cemented at 4155. Farmsworth, No. 1, a new property to be developed by the Standard, has been located.
An effort so make the Talbert well a regular producer has been continued for more than a week with little results. It looks as though it will be necessary to go a little deeper on this one to make a big well out of it.
The Texas Holding Company’s remarkable well has settled down to a regular flow of 500 barrels daily.

U.S. Has Heavy Salt Reserve
WASHINGTON, Sept. 16. — The U.S. produced sufficient salt in 1920 to allow 130 pounds for every person in the country, according to figures just made public by the geological survey here. Actually, it is stated, the average person consumes only a few pounds yearly for seasoning; the remainder of this vast allowance being used for packing meat, curing fish; tanning, refrigerating, dairying and for chemical purposes.
John Harrison, the inventor of the marine chronometer, received a reward of twenty thousand pounds from the British government for his invention.
