Wednesday, September 7, 1921 Society: Clubs : Lodges : Churches PLANO PUPILS ENJOY PARTY The opening event of the musical season for the piano pupils of Miss Betella A. Schwentker was given in the form of a most enjoyable party at the Guild hall yesterday afternoon. Each pupil had the privilege of bringing one guest and a large number were present to participate in the good time planned for them. Various games were played and all were kept busy, especially in the turtle race. The winners of each set tried out for the finals and Ervin Schwentker was the successful one to win the prize. Patricia Wood won the prize of another exciting game called "Musical Fright." Another special event was a group of readings given by Evelyn Magnahan, a pupil of Miss Schwentker and also an elocution pupil of Miss Paye Kern. Her readings were of a humorous nature and were greatly enjoyed by all. The regular contest prizes for the best work done during three months were given to William Heger, first, and Gladys Thayer, second. A special summer contest was held and Olive Tozier was the winner of this prize. Special plans are made for the new contest and all are going to strive to be the lucky ones, so an interesting season's work is looked forward to. Late in the afternoon after refreshments were served and more games enjoyed, the pupils reluctantly left for their homes. More recitals and parties will be given regularly during this term. HOSTESS TO MERRY FEW At her pretty home on West-st, Miss Valle Pember was the delightful hostess to the members of the ferry Few club. Sweet summer blossoms were used throughout the rooms for decorations. The time was quickly passed as the guests were busily sewing. The hostess served refreshments of sherbet and cake. The members present were feeddames Norbert Anderson, Edgar Black and son, Ed Campbell andaughter, Gus Prescott, Wilson, Blanche Hickson and the hostess, Valle Pember. Mrs. Ed Pember was guest of the club. GUESTS AT L. A. WEDDING Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Shear and Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Shear will go to Los Angeles this evening where they will be guests at the wedding of Miss Phyllis Ford to Mr. Samuel Stewart, the ceremony being performed at 8 o'clock in the Episcopal church, Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Shinn are also invited guests. Miss Ford was teacher in Centralia school last year and made many friends during her residence in that community, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Shinn. With Mr. Stewart, Miss Ford visited here friends here several times since leaving at the close of school. PRETTY GARDEN PARTY Another of the pretty social affairs with which Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Dlerker favor their friends was given last evening when they enjoyed a garden party. Light was given in Japanese effect, with festoons of the pretty, gaily-colored lanterns, and bright zenias nodded their heads in approval from many large clusters about the scene. Dinner was baked in the out-of-door oven, in the pergola, and the table was placed on the lawn, centered with Japanese flowers. The menu consisted of a beefsteak bake, Mr. Dlerker and C. O. IMPORTANT AID MEETING The Ladies' Aid of the Christian church will hold a very important meeting at the church tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. Every member of the church is requested to be present. LOYAL WOMEN MEET FRIDAY The Loyal Women's class of the christian church will meet at the home of Mrs. H. Bowen at 410 So. Melrose-st, Friday, Sept. 9, with Mrs. R. L. Bowen as hostess. This will be a business meeting and all members are asked to be in attendance. The ladies of this class are holding a cooked food sale at Stroup's meat market on No. Los Angeles-st. Everyone come prepared to buy one of the goodies that are to be sold Saturday. A goodly sum was realized by the class at the sale held Labor day, sandy, pie, and other goodies were old. The ladies wish to thank all those who supported them in their undertaking. WAHS" HERE FOR HOLIDAYS The "Wahs," a society composed eight girls from Redlands university, were entertained by three Anaheim girls over the holidays. Slummer parties were held at the home Miss Frieda Heineman, whileinner parties were given at the homes of Misses Hedstrom and Helena Marburger. Saturday evening,the "Wahs" motored to Long Beach and had a delightful beach party. The out-of-town girls enjoying this treat were Misses Vivian Cox, Alta Wisdom, Elizabeth Van Grupling,atherine Edwards, Virginia Jones and the home girls, Frieda Heineman, Grace Hedstrom and Helen Marburger. Light refreshments of ice cream and cake were served. ESUME "MIKADO" REHEARSAL Rehearsal for "Mikado," the pre-theater which will be produced by members of the Orange-co Choral Society, in Santa Ana on a date in the not far distant future, will be assumed this evening. Chorus members have been meeting occasionally around the summer for singing practice, but real work will be started and continued with energy until time for production. Several singers from Anaheim will take part in the opera, either principals or in chorus work. SUNDAY DINNER GUESTS Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Rainey had as their dinner guests on Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lewis and two sons Roddy and Walter Jr., Mrs. Stewart of Colorado and Mr. and Mrs. Claron Morgan of Los Angeles. IN WELLMAN PIANO STUDIO Miss Bess Bennett of Los Angeles will have the piano studio of Missuna Wellman during the latter's absence in New York. Miss Bennett is a graduate of Dennison University, Tranville, Ohio, having studied music in the conservatory there. After coming to Los Angeles she had further musical training at the College of Music, U. S. C., where she is now member of the faculty. She has had special training in harmony under Miss Carolyn Atchin, and in children's work under Miss Adelaide Crowbridge. Miss Bennett will be in the Wellman studio, 114 South Philadelphia street, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and will be available for interviews on Friday evening. DELIGHTFUL SURPRISE PARTY A delightful surprise party took place last night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. P. McCabe. The occasion was in honor of their 37th wedding anniversary. The self-invited guests brot refreshments and these were enjoyed by all. Numerous games were played thus bringing the delightful evening to a close. There were about 35 guests present. HICKS-HENDRICKSON NUPTIALS Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Geissinger were in Los Angeles yesterday where Dr. Geissinger officiated at the marriage of Miss Florence Hicks to Mr. Carl Edward Hendrickson of Minneapolis, instructor in educational psychology in the University of Minnesota. Miss Hicks is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Hicks, West Adams street; Mr. Hicks is known in Anaheim for his financial connections with development of citrus lands in the community being associated with several local men. The Hicks family were members of Dr. Geissinger's church during his pastorate for six years of University Methodist church. The bridal pair was accompanied by six couples, all of them sorority sisters and fraternity men. The couple left for a honeymoon trip through the Canadian Rockies, after which they will go to Minneapolis to reside. BOOK LOVERS' CLUB MEETS Meeting for te first time after vacation season the Book Lovers' club met with Mrs. J. P. Brastad yesterday afternoon, all members except three present. Luncheon was served at 12:30, the table being pretty ornamented with cut flowers from Mrs. Brastad's garden. Covers were laid for nine guests. The afternoon was passed in study of John Burroughs, his life and works, and was conducted in form of a quiz, making the lesson a most interesting one. Members for the new season are the following ladies: Mesdames J. H. Swan, J. L. Havener, L. C. Deming, H. M. Adams, Loonard Evans, E. A. Johnston, H. L. Sears, G. M. Simpson, L. B. Easton, H. D. Newkirk, J. P. Brastad and Arthur Hargraves, of Ontario. THEATRE PARTY COMPLIMENT To compliment Miss Betty Brus, Mrs. C. J. Sweeters was hostess to a theatre party feel night at the Fairyland Following the show the kuechle Venue at the Cherrr Blossom where a delightful two course luncheon was enjoyed. The guests of the evening were Mesdames J. Dillon, L. Z. Kroeger, Al Erickson, W. H. Martenet, F. Tausch, J. E. Baker, E. Brus, the honoree, Miss Betty Brus, and the hostess, Mrs. C. J. Sweeters. AUXILIARY PLANS BAZAAR The meeting yesterday of the Auxiliary of the American Legion was an interesting one, as plans were discussed for a bazaar which the ladies will hold in a few weeks. During the meeting many of the members had their needlework and occupied their fingers on articles which later will be for sale. An interesting talk was given by H. J. Wilson, field representative of the southern California division of the civilian branch of the Salvation Army, who made an appeal for assistance in raising the $2000 budget required for the rolloff fund in northern Orange county. Mr. Wilson will launch a campaign the latter part of the month, and the American Legion and Auxiliary will be his strong supporters and assistants. PLAN LAWN FETE AND SOCIAL All the plans are complied for the lawn fete and social to be held on the Mrs. J. D. Delmsen lawn, by the guild of St. Michael's church, tomorrow afternoon and evening. All kinds of useful and decorative articles will be on sale, and cooked foods, cold drinks and home made candy will be for sale. A program has been arranged which will add to the pleasure of the occasion. CHISPA CHAPTER TO ORGANIZE Chispa Chapter, O. E.
