THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER An Independent Newspaper, Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday R. W. ERNEST, Manager PAUL W. HESTER, Editor Subscription rate—In No. Orange-co: Per year $2; six months $1.25 Entered at the Postoffice at Anaheim, Caitl, as second class matter. GIGANTIC FRAUDS POINT STRONG MORAL Chicago's swindling gang, startling epouse of whose operations has just been made seems to have reached a new high water mark in its flood of frauds. The operations included "wild-cat" speculation of the most untamable sort, "frenzied finance" schemes kiting of checks and other unholy forms of unlawfulness and recklessness. Appealing to the cupidity of the get-rich-quick tribe, this chain of swindles has ramified throughout the country and brought many to ruin. Among others, who suffer are a number of persons innocent of any intention to indulge in frenzied speculation. Swindles would not flourish if there were more caution among those who have money to invest, and if there were less of the hunger for quick fortune. MARRIAGES ARE MANY IN CALIFORNIA Let the possessors and gloomsters wait as they will, Cupid and his blissful endeavors will not be stayed, and Hymen is collaborating with the little unclead god. Why, here in California, during the merry month of June, weddings bells rang for 4492 couples—the biggest matrimonial record ever rolled up in June in the history of this state. Economic readjustments are having no deterring influence upon matrimonial alliances. Let "hard times" go hang—what is that to the robbled and the loving who value companionship above the mere sordid things of life? Ironical as it is, however, monetary considerations DO enter into the marriage relation. It is too much to say baldly that matrimony is a matter-o-money, but the sagacious, even in the midst of their romancing, must give thought to the wherewithal to appease "the butcher, the baker and the candle-stick-maker." In the dn's news, for illustration, comes intelligence that the romance of Lieut. Lewis A. Kloor Jr. must be broken "because of the small salary which a naval lieutenant receives—$2000 a year." Lieut. Kloor it will be remembered was one of the three naval aviators who came into worldwide notice last December when their balloon was driven by air currents from Far Rockaway up into the wilds of Canada, where after thrilling experiences, they eventually were discovered by an Indian trapper and rescued. Kloor wrote to his fiance, Miss Flowerton, from the wilds, telling of the hardships endured by the trio. And now bread-and-butter consideration—the prosas struggle for existence—are givenas the reason for breaking this engagement and shattering the romance. Poor Cupid! Poor Hymen! Why not start a Cupid & Hymen endowment to cover such cases, so that romance may not wither under the cold blasts of adversity? The coming fall and winter promise good things for California, Many Easterners, from present indications, will come, despite the stringency of the economic situation "back yonder." The demand for homes in California is brisk. Many are coming here from other states, either to buy residences already built or to take over vacant lots and to build thereon. The spirit of home building development is in the California air. MAKING THINGS EASY FOR GANG By Alexander Anderson A few line wells had been brot in and before long the earth sumps at those wells had become uncomfortable full. The divisional foreman asked when everything would be ready for booking. BARDEEN IS STILL TESTING FOR WATER Puente Hills The Bardeen Oil Co.'s No. 1 drilled to 2221 feet is still testing out for water and production. The well has been on the pump for two weeks, and to date there is some water coming with the oil. GANG By Alexander Anderson A few line wells had been brot in and before long the earth sumps at these wells had become uncomfortable full. The divisional foreman asked when everything would be ready for hooking the tail pumps on to pump the oil to the lease shipping tank. The lease foreman said that all the tail pumps were ready but no six-inch pipe had been received for the connection between the six-inch line and the shipping tank. "Dig the trench for it," said the divisional foreman, "and I will have that pipe sent along tomorrow." A gang wont to dig the trench. From a "T" in the six-inch line a trench had to be dug at right angles to the line for 80 feet. This trench ended at the side of the big shipping tank, where an elbow would carry the vertical pipe from which two more elbows and two nipples would complete the job. There was no pipe at hand when the gang arrived to dig, so they had nothing to screw into the "T" to guide them in laying off the direction for the trench, which had to be at right angles to the buried six-inch line. The ground was so hard that digging was no particular fun. How did the gang foreman mark the line for the trench? He did it down to the "T" emwlp ynwap right. He commenced by digging down to the "T"; then no measured off 30 feet along the buried line with a tape and dug gdown to the line at that point. Next he got one of the boys to hold the end of the tape over the center of the pipe at the middle of the "T" and he stretched out the tape towards the shipping tank and held a short piece of stick against the 40-foot mark on the tape. He made about a six-foot scratch on the ground, with the end of the stick at the same time keeping the tape stretched tight. The scratch was a part of a circle with a radius of 40 feet. Now he got the man to hold the end of the tape over the center of the pipe 30 feet from the "T"; at the place he had dug down to. He shifted the stick to the 50-foot mark on the tape and again stretched the tape and made another scratch on the ground. This scratch crossed the first scratch. The point where the two scratches crossed was what he wanted. A trench from that point to the "T" was at right angles to the buried six-inch line. Now as the gang had the job accurately marked off for them, they went ahead and dug a narrow trench. The foreman's tape work had only taken five minutes but it BARDEEN IS STILL TESTING FOR WATER Puente Hills The Bardeen Oil Co.'s No. 1 drilled to 2221 feet is still testing out for water and production. The well has been on the pump for two weeks and to date there is some water coming with the oil. Unless this is exhausted a second cementing will be made. The Chino-Gorona United is having a lot of real trouble in getting its wildcat to make regular production. Drilled to 3678 feet the well has shown considerable oil but on account of sand has failed to make a regular production. A new string of tubing was put in, but faulty collars allowed the tubing to part and that in turn resulted in a fishing job. At 3715 feet the Mahala Oil and Gas Co. set a string of eight-inch pipe. Everything is now in readiness to bring in what has looked for a month or more like a big well. According to the state mining bureau the Mahala has made a state record for drilling with cable tools. The 3715 feet of hole was made in exactly one year. Continued drilling has brot the Pasadena-Puente well down to 1100 feet. The formation is brown shale and the oil showngs that caused the big excitement at 500 and 600 feet have disappeared. After making a 100-foot hole in the hardest formation ever drilled in surface formation the St. Helen's Pet lost the hole and had to redrill. A lot of the hole drilled was so hard that a foot a day was considered good drilling. Complete Menchego No. 2 at 4289 Feet Bren-Olinda Field The Columbia Oil Producing Co. completed Menchego No. at 4289 and put the new well on at a 125 barrels. Menchego No. 1 was drilled to 2225 feet and is standing. Orange No. 7 drilling at 2835 feet is in the oil sand and looks like a big well. The Columbia Oil Co.'s Puente No. LA is drilling at 400 feet in hard shale. The Puente well is drilling in the heart of one of the oldest shallow fields in Cal. The Fullerton Oil Co. is about to complete a deep well on the Orange Hill. At 4250 this well is showing gas and oil in quantity and is expected to make a nice well. The Petroleum Development Co.'s No. 94 drilling at Olinda is in the oil sand at 3038 feet and looks like another two hundred barrel well. All drilling operations on the West Coasts Oil Co.'s Olinda properties has been temporarily discontinued. Two wells were drilling when the shut down order was issued. Now, as the gang had the job accurately marked off for them, they went ahead and dug a narrow trench. The foreman's tape work had only taken five minutes but it made things easy for the gang. Why was that a right angle? Because the three sides of the triangle laid off on the ground measured 30 feet, 40 feet and 50 feet. It was a "three-four-five" triangle. Can other angles be laid off with a tape? Yes, any angle at all can easily be laid off. If you are interested in learning how to do things like this, why not write for particulars of the Oil Production Course at the Fullerton Union high school. All oil workers can take the course. 500,000 RUSSIANS NEAR STARVATION LONDON, Sept. 7—Half a million Russians are threatened with immediate death from starvation in the Samara district unless aid is rushed quickly said an urgent "S. O. S," received here today from the American relief workers in Moscow. The telegram was forwarded to Walter L. Brown chief of the American relief administration in Europe who is at present in Geneva. PIPE SET IN EAGLE ROCK WELL Los Angeles Field After drilling to 4296 feet the Beatty Oil Co. set a string of 8-inch pipe in the Eagle Rock well. Much of an formation up to 000 feet was granite. After leaving 2000 feet the formation changed to grey sand, and just before setting pipe a lot of blue shale was struck. Rainbow colors and gas were reported at 2485. The Beatty Oil Co. is pleased with the outlook and plan to startle local olddom with a real oil well at Eagle Rock. The Eddistone Oil Corp. is preparing to drill out the cement and resume drilling at Palms on the Burkhart No.1. Drilled to 3500 feet pip was set at 3450. At the time the pipe was set a good showing of oil and gas was reported. This well will have considerable bearing on the old Salt Lake field. Westminster Showing Of Gas Continues Westminster and Garden Grove Drilling at the Westminster test well is now at 4250 and at this depth the shale and shell intermittent formation, struck at 4175 continues. The gas showing struck at 3950 also continues. At times the oil colors run very conspicuously, and would indicate that an oil island is near. The hole is in excellent condition and the drilling will continue to 5000 if necessary. At 3228 the Standard Oil Co. set the ten inch pipe, and the Garden Grove wild cat is now standing cemented. No showing of any importance was reported. It was a good place to set the big pipe and the well will stand for a couple of weeks. BEAUMONT READY Selecting a drive town of Best Crudie Oil Co. In and start drilling The Beaumont cently organized by Los Angeles getting matter a rig. The Moreno O' for some little consistent drilling est reports from depth at 1375 showing to indr drilling. The Pioneer P and backed by ing a wild cat account of a lot putting in equ getting started and expensive about 450 feet. CARD O We wish to thou who showed us sympathy during loss of our son C.A. SHELL PREPARES TO BRING IN MESA 1 LONG BEACH, Sept. 7.—Before the rig irons had cooled, the Shell Company had the wreckage cleared away and a new rig going up at No. 1, the well that made the spectacular fire on Signal Hill the latter part of last week. Seven big lines carrying steam and mud under high pressure extinguished the fire. The rigging up work on the new derrick has been completed and actual drilling and cleaning out will be under way before the end of the week. As far as can be ascertained, the hole is not damaged, and indication also appears that the water was successfully shut off previous to the gas blow out and fire. On the Alamitos lease No. 1 is now on regular production. No. 2 is building rig, and No. 3 shows close to 2500 feet of hole. Babb-Tucker No. 1 at 2755, shows oil and gas and looks good. Drilling at Hrsch No. 1 is at 2755 and this well is showing gas and some oil. Jones No. 1 is rigging up and No. 2 is a rig. Patton-Wilson No. 1 is a rig. Drilling on Pickler No. 1 is at 2400 and, the formation is showing oil and gas. At the Stake-miller well drilling is at 3100 and a good showing of gas with colors of oil is the situation. Wilbur No. 1 is a rig. The Shell Company has the construction work well, under way for all office building, tool shops and warehouses. The cost of these buildings will run close to three hundred thousand dollars. Drilling on the Crest Oil Co's No. 1 is now at 2845. At this depth the formation is showing a nice brown shale and the ten inch pipe will probably be set soon. Crest No. 1 made an unusually good drilling record. Here is hope the Crest will get a shut off the first attempt and drill into the oil sands before the end of the month. Drilling on te Dabney Syndicate No. 1 is now at 1350 feet, the formation is hard sand and is drilling nicely. The rig for Dabney No. 2 is up. The W. M. Keck well was drilled to 3550 feet and the ten inch casing set at 3250. Field Superintendent Hill made one of the best runs. H. T. & K. SYNDICATE GETS OIL AT 2925 San Joaquin Hills The H. T. & K. Syndicate drilled to 2925 feet and at that depth a showing of oil was struck, but along with the oil there was some water. The LaGuna Oil Assn.'s No. 1 is now making hole at 2900 feet in the hard sand. The drilling is going good and something is expected soon. The Nu Santa Oil Co.'s test well is now drilling at 2045 and the formation is showing considerable grey shale. Three wells are now drilling in the Balboa district, Wirscher and Gray No. 1 is down 2245 in shale. W.A.G.No.1 is better than 800 feet and is still in surface clay. The W.A.G.Oll and Pet.Co.is bullding a rig. West Coast Lease Mr. Chester McQuarrie, wife and the Misses Brumund, of Santa Ana, took great chances by taking a dip in the Santa Ana river last Thursday while motoring through Santa Ana Canyon. Field Superintendent Hill made one of the best runs in drilling for the southern field. E. J. Miley is watching formation changes closely at Xemino No. 1. The drilling is now at 3025 and a showing is momentarily expected. At 1589 feet the National Crude No. 1 is held up with a fishing job. The formation is sticky clay. A twist off left several stands of drill pipe in the hole. Drilling in brown sandy shale at 2935 the Oceanic Oil Company is keeping close tab on the formations and will set pipe soon. The drilling has gone splendidly and is a credit to the man who heads the company, Jack McKeon. Securing permission to resume drilling, the San Martenna Oil Company drilled ahead of the pipe at 2735 to 2925 and is prospecting. It is the intention to drill ahead and find the oil sand, then come back and set a string of 8 in pipes. Failing to get a water shut off at 2748 the Sandburg Petroleum Company continued with its No. 1 to 2820 and is preparing to land the pipe and re-cement. Sandburg-Coop's No. 1 is making hole in the sand and shale at 2950. The usual good time was made last week on the Signal Hill Syndicate. The log now shows 2800 feet of hole and the drilling is in the hard sand. The Standard Oil Co. moved in closer to Signal Hill production and located a well on the Golf grounds, the new well to be known as Alamitos No. 1, the property belonging to the Alamitos Land and Water Company. Drilling at Bixby No. 1 is now at 4500-feet and no showing of oil has been reported. Drilling on the United Oil Co's No. 1 is now at 2100-feet and the shale formation is allowing some fast drilling to be made. The Walker-Western Oil Co. is putting the finishing touches on to the rigging up work at well No. 1 and will be ready to start actual drilling probably before the end of the week. SAVAGE HISTORY OF THE RED MAN SERIES FIRE SIGNALS BY "INDIAN" MILLER In the old days white men would see fires of the Indians hills and mountains but could not read them. These men were not intended for the white men. It often happened in days that white men campaigning against the Indians would demoralized by the sight of those signal fires winking in the winking and blinking, appearing and disappearing, waving back forth, up and down. The white man had no mode of signalling he did not understand the Indian code. He must have felt he indeed when he saw those messages that he could not read. The ordinary way of signalling with fires was by passing a set back and forth before the fire on the ground. Sometimes the man would merely jump back and forth before the fire. Some of the signal was a steady fire. Sometimes it was a fire that flash up and then die out instantly. Sometimes the signalling done with a torch. It could be signalled with in the same way fire on the ground; or it could be waved back and forth and down. BEAUMONT CRUDE READY TO SPUD IN Riverside Field Selecting a drilling site near the little town of Beaumont, the Beaumont Crude Oil Co. is about ready to spud in and start drilling. The Beaumont Midway Oil Co., recently organized oil company backed by Los Angeles and Riverside capital is getting material on the ground for a rig. The Moreno Oil Co. has been drilling for some little time and made some consistent drilling progress. The latest reports from the well give the depth at 1375. Enough gas has been showing to Ind encouragement to the drilling. The Pioneer Petroleum Co. organized and backed by Brea capital is drilling a wild cat well near Homet. On account of a lot of road building and putting in equipment the work of getting started has been both slow and expensive. Drilling is now at about 450 feet.
