EXCHANGE DOESN'T HELP CUPID MUCH The lonely and bashful young galant gets no aid from Cupid via the telephone line—at least not in Anaheim. This was disclosed today when it was stated that while companionship-seeking swains frequently attempt to flirt with the operators at the local exchange of the Pac. Tel. and Tel. Co., such essays invariably meet with rebuffs. At the same time, it was declared there are instances of where lonely swains have sought to get "central" to act as a sort of "clearing house of the heart." In other words, the would-be flirters have asked that the operator give the name of some local girl who would consent to accompany the lonely man to a picture show, just to relieve his loneliness. It is related by telephone operators that on a recent evening a lonely traveling salesman placed a call for the information operator from a certain hotel booth. "Could you tell me the name of a nice little girl who would take pity on my loneliness and go to a picture show with me?" was his question. The operator was equal to the occasion and told him to call 235 and state his request. Then she shamelessly listened while he placed the call. "Police department," was the reply that came over the wire in answer to the call. There was a sudden gasp, and then a receiver was placed v-e-r-y quietly on its hook and the episode was closed. Operators have to cope with other things beside affairs of the men. That's only a sample of the multitudinous queries that long-suffering information has to listen to 265 days out of every year. She grows quite used to questions as to the weather forecast, the date of the appearance of Pons-Winncke's comet, the nights of the grunion runs, and countless others. However, aside from all this, running a telephone exchange and superintending a district for a telephone company, is a serious business as E. A. Beard, local manager for the Pac. Tel. and Tel., will testify. Conditions which earlier in the season kept the company nearly 50 orders in arrears have changed until now the company is able to keep up with most of the orders for the installation of new telephones. At one period it was almost impossible to get instruments, but the shortage has been overcome and the one great problem, according to Board, now is that of securing cable, which is manufactured by only one or two firms in the U.S. The special cable is all produced in the east, and the local company has been informed that the orders placed for this section cannot be filled until late summer. There are now more than 1250 instruments installed in the local branch of the service, which gives a general average of a telephone to every five and one-half citizens in Anaheim. These subscribers are served by a corps of girl operators, whose mastery of the rather complicated switchboard is accomplished in less than a month's time in every case. Some telephone companies maintain a regular school for the beginners; and it is estimated by these companies that it takes between $600 and $1000 to fit a girl to become a successful operator. At the local office, the first two weeks are spent by the novice in watching and studying the switchboard, and gradually taking up the matter of calls. The lessons are absorbed rather than learned, and it is only a short time until the beginner can take her place at the desk, fit her individual headpiece over her ears and answer, "Number, please?" at the signal of the flashing light, and be a regularly accredited "central." If it's from Witman's it’s good! California products are to have generous protection, under the new tariff measure. It is indicated. This will redound to the material benefit of the whole state. DIRECTORS WILL MEET TONIGHT A called meeting of the C. of C. directors will be held at 7:20 o'clock tonight at headquarters to consider the most feasible program of work for the forthcoming fiscal year. A questionnaire has been sent out, and about half of the members have replied giving their ideas as to what program should be adopted. The questions asked were as follows. 1. What in your opinion is the thing of first importance that should be undertaken by the Chamber of Commerce to improve conditions and opportunities in your own line of business or profession? 2. What as a citizen, do you believe that the Chamber of Commerce should first undertake for the good of the community at large. ANCHOR ERECTS DERPICK The Anchor Oil Co., which has four leases on Signal Hill and three at Huntington Beach, is erecting a derrick at Huntington Beach and will begin operations at once. It was stated today by Roger Shwartz who with F. W. Moulton, represents the company in Anaheim, and are selling shares to it. Two of the lenses at Signal Hill are adjoining the Dutch L. and it is contemplated to begin drilling on one of these in a very short time. The Dutch L. has a well which has just come in. The lease at Huntington Beach where operations are under way adjoins the Moses' Special and is close to the Public Petroleum which has two good producers. Messra, Shwartz and Moulton were formerly salesmen for the Cal-Iowa Co., but this company has made 50-50 arrangements for drilling with the Eden Syndicate, and taken its stock off the market. 2 Months not Last Long potatoes; 270 sacks per acre.
