BREA CANYON WELL
AHEAD OF SCHEDULE
The Brea Canyon Oil Co.'s No. 32 sprung a surprise and came in a little ahead of time. Drilled to 3200, with 8 inch set and water test made preparations for bringing the well in were under way when all of a sudden No. 32 decided to come in unladed. Late Saturday evening a terrific gas blow out opened the well, and not until three days later was the well under perfect control. The well is still making a large amount of gas, and the oil is just beginning to start. On account of the danger attending the blow out all work on two other wells drilling on the property had to be suspended. No. 32 is still going down, the log this week showing 4160, sandy shale, and No. 2-4 is drilling at 2555 in shale.
The Columbia Oil Producing Co. will soon have a new producer on the Orange lease at Brea, Orange No. 7 is now in the oil sand at 3450 and will be completed soon. Pico No. 2 is approaching 4000 feet in the sandy shale. Pico No. 3 stands cemented at 2800, and No. 4 is drilling at 1450. On the Menchego lease No. 1 is to test out for water and production at 3207. Menchego No. 2 is drilling in sandy shale at 3425. Fisher No. 2 is building rig. At Olinda the Columbia has No. 28 drilling in the oil sand at 2300 and the well is looking good.
If there was nothing to the oil business it would not be any business. The Fullerton Oil Co. subscribes to this idea in developing its Brea property, where No. 14 was about to test water and go ahead at 2400 when the casing collapsed. A fishing job is holding up No. 6 at 3300 at which point a good showing of oil sand was struck.
The General Petroleum Corporation, one of the heavy developing concerns in the Brea and Placentia-Richfield district, suspended drilling on five wells, laid off a hundred men and figures on closing out several more drilling crews as the wells are completed. Two reasons are given, the field does not warrant such a by the test. No. 92 is drilling at 2975 in brown shale, and No. 94 is drilling at 2250 and showing oil and gas.
The West Coast Oil Co. has a habitat of bringing in 300 barrel wells. One each month has been coming in now since the first of the year. The late addition is No. 49, drilled to 3155. The wells drilled in the old Olinda field do not come in gushers, but at 250 and 300 barrels and hold up to this figure for years. Drilling on No. 83 is at 875 in the conglomerate.

The General Petroleum Corporation, one of the heavy developing concerns in the Brea and Placentia-Richfield district, suspended drilling on five wells laid off a hundred men and figures on closing out several more drilling crews as the wells are completed. Two reasons are given: the field does not warrant such a heavy drilling program and at the present time there seems to be some danger of overproduction. On the Tonner property where six wells were drilling, two are making hole now, and one producer, the discovery well, is being deepened. Tonner No. 1 is deepened to 1586, some 54 feet being added to the original depth. Tonner No. 11 is drilling at 3100 in the hard sand.
Drilling in one of the hardest shale formations at 858 feet the La Habra Midway is finding the "going" pretty slow. The work is being done with cable tools.
The light oil showing struck by the Olinda Land Co. at 600 feet continues at the present depth of 875 feet. The showing looks real encouraging and may open up a new light oil field in the vicinity of No. 23. At No. 22 a fishing job held up the work at 2530. The oil showing here is of the light quality also.
The Petroleum Development Co. (Santa Fe) is getting ready to test the oil showings and water conditions in its deep test well No. 88 drilled to 4289. Occasionally this well has shown some oil. The quantity and quality will be ascertained
WALNUT CROP WILL BE 50 PCT. LARGER
The walnut crop in the Santa Ana district will be from 40 to 50 per cent larger than last year, in the opinion of Harry W. Lewis, president of the Santa Ana Walnut Growers' association, and other officials of the organization.
The estimate is based on the present condition of the trees and crops. The trees are in excellent condition. The nuts have set well and are developing rapidly. It is expected that the crop will mature rather early this season. The percentage of the increase in the county crop will probably be as large.
Orange-co, groves have been remarkably free of aphids in the past years, and it is said that this pest is less in evidence now than in recent years. The hot weather in April is given credit for having eradicated the pest to some extent. The cloudy-damp weather of the past few days is said to be aphis weather and should it continue very long might result in developing the pest in large numbers.
It is stated that it is probable that nut growing section where the crop was weaker conditions in.
In some sections damage was from 25 Despite this damage made that the state season will be equal season. This is account groves coming into trees having heavy that the output of war is being doubled every years, through the infestation It is estimated that planted to walnuts acres are bearing. Duction was 40,000,000.
The market situation crop is better than many years. The C Growers' association sales record last cleaned up all the 1920 production. The son will go upon a bear of home-grown to General Manager of the annual meeting association two weeks' crop is reported till growers oo00,000.

115 RIGS NOW DOT HUNTINGTON BEACH
Huntington Beach
One hundred and fifteen derricka now dot the Huntington Beach oil fields. The number of operating companies has increased to 54 and the approximate daily production of this California's newest oil field is now 6500 barrels. Fifty wells are drilling, 16 wells are producing, and the number of rigs in process of construction are 49. No field ever opened up in California has been developed with such speed as Huntington Beach. The fact of the matter is that the speed shown is becoming a source of alarm in that careful and efficient development work is being sacrificed for speed.
At 2500 the Amalgamated Oil Co. is bringing in Huntington 1-A. The well looks good for a 500 barrel producer. At Fowler No. 1 casing trouble is holding up the well. Fowler No. 2, and Pearce No. 1 are building rig.
The Argonaut Oil Co. made an attempt early in the week to bring in Turley No. 1. The well started flowing and then sanded up. The tubing is to be pulled and the well given a chance to flow through the 6 inch casing. The outlook looks good for a 500 or 800 barrel well.
Preparations are being made to bring in the Bolsa Chica Oil Co.'s Augor No. 1. As soon as the state's O.K. is on the water the well will be broubled in. The depth is 2132, and the well has been showing up strong.
The Blue Shale Oil and Mining Co.'s well has been standing cemented now for a month. Information has been given out that the company was waiting for drill pipe. The rotary has been removed, and the rig does not present the appearance of ever going ahead.
Huntington Central sanded up and has quit producing. The tubing is to be pulled and the well given a chance to flow thru the six inch casing. Huntington Central No. 2 is rigging up to drill out the cement at 2000 ft.
The Hurst Oil Sundicate has extensive development plans for H.B. At No. 1 the water will be shut off. No. 2 is rigging up and will start drilling this week. No. 3 is building rig. Just recently this concern closed a lease for the Methodist camp ground property and has other leases in the now restricted area that will be developed when the ban is lifted.
At 2550 an attempt was made yesterday to bring in Mille-Keck No. 2. The well made a big flow and stopped. A sand heave had filled the hole-up for some distance. Not until this has been cleaned out will production start.
At 2300 the Peerless Petroleum Co.'s beginning to show up rather favorably, and it is the intention now to set pipe at about 2350.
The Republic Petroleum's new well is not producing. Brought in on little or no dusting will be necessary this season.
Orange county is one of the f.w walnut growing sections in the state where the crop was not damaged by weather conditions in April.
In some sections of the state the damage was from 25 to 50 per cent.
Despite this damage, prediction is made that the state production this season will be equal to that of last season. This is accounted for by young groves coming into bearing, the young trees having heavy crops. It is said that the output of walnuts in the state is being doubled every three or four years, through the increase in average. It is estimated that 88,000 acres are

NOTICE of the crop was not damaged by weather conditions in April.
In some sections of the state the damage was from 25 to 50 per cent.
Despite this damage, prediction is made that the state production this season will be equal to that of last season. This is accounted for by young groves coming into bearing, the young trees having heavy crops. It is said that the output of walnuts in the state is being doubled every three or four years, through the increase in acreage. It is estimated that 85,000 acres are planted to walnuts, of which 61,000 acres are bearing. Last season's production was 40,000,000 pounds.
The market situation for the coming crop is better than it has been for many years. The California Walnut Growers association established a sales record last season, when it cleaned up all the hold-over of the 1920 production. The crop this season will go upon a market absolutely bear of home-grown nuts, according to General Manager Carlyle Thorpe at the annual meeting of the Santa Ana association two weeks ago. The past season's crop is reported to have returned to growers of the state $10,000,000.
"Since October 8 we have returned to So. Cal. walnut growers nearly $10,000,000 which represents the largest crop return ever received with but one exception," says Manager Thorpe.
Nothing new developed at the Western Pacific's No. 1 during the past week. Nothing can be done or no progress made until the tubing caught in the cementing has been recovered and pulled out. The hole is $100 ft.

Information has the company was pipe. The rotary and the rig does appearance of ever sanded up and out the cement indicate has extensions for H. B. At all be shut off. No will start drill is building rig, concern closed a dist camp ground other leases in the that will be deban is lifted. Capt was made yes Miley-Keck No. is a big flow and have had filled the distance. Not until ended out will properless Petroleum to show up and it is the intention at about 2350. Petroleum's new ing. Brought in on last Saturday at 2685 the well produced for a while at 200 barrels and then sanded up. It is the intention now to pull tubing and clean out.
At 2160 the State Consolidated No. 1 is being prepared to drill deeper. The well is flowing, but it is thought that by deepening it can be made a good producer.
In the independent list, the Sun Oil Co. of Calif. is one of the heaviest developers. This company has four wells under way. No. 1 is 2436 feet deep, and cable tools are going in to complete the well. No. 2 is a completed rig. No. 3 is drilling and going down fast, 2000 feet will be reached before the end of the week; and No. 4 is building rig.
Hard luck seems to stick around the Texcal's holdings. Just as a string of 10 inch was being put in No. 1 the pipe parted and halted the work. No. 2 has sanded up to such an extent that the well will have to be cleaned out and drilled deeper. However the troubles are only temporary and the Texcal will soon have two nice producers good for 500 barrels a piece.
On drilling out the cement and testing Vista Del Mar No. 1 it was found that the water was not shut off at 2200. Cable tools are going in and a second shut off will be tried later. At No. 2 a test for water at 2445 is being made. This one looks like a good job.
The Union Oil Co. is the heavy developing company of the north side of the field. Copeland No. 1 is deepening and is now at 3100 and drill-
