"TRAVELING" FARM WOMAN IS FAVORED
Sentiment in Orange County in favor of a Farm Home Department to the Farm Bureau is becoming very strong and the following incident will suggest one line of investigation for such department.
A farm woman who was growing weary with the walking she was farced to do because of the inconvenient arrangement of her living room, kitchen, cellar and other rooms that called for her presence most of the time of every day, made an odd experiment. It was certainly a thoroughly up to date and scientific one. She wore a length of time a pedometer which would give her an absolute record of the distance walked each day. The results were amazing. We would doubt them had we no proof.
This woman, doing ordinary house work on a farm walked twelve miles a day when she was doing only her average daily stunt of housework; on days when there were extras on hand, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, or threshing, the pace climbed up to between 15 and 18 miles. Totaled up, she covered an average of 400 miles in a month and in five years—hold your breach—circumscribed the globe, right in her own home!
Farmers' wives of Orange county, take up the project and save your time and strength by improved household equipment and better system for your work. Get together in the Home department and work out your own problems.
Benefits of National Farmers' Organization
What is being done by the American Farm Bureau Federation, with a membership of 1,700,000 farmers, and its values toward the agricultural development of the country, were told recently by J. R. Howard, president of the national organization. He said:
The headquarters of the American Farm Bureau are in Chicago. This organization is but little more than a year old and the membership rolls are increasing daily by the thousands. Organization and membership campaigns are at present going on in 14 of the affiliated states. President Howard is an own farmer very much familiar with national affairs as they relate to agriculture. It has been necessary in his executive capacity to meet with many of the large influences that have to do with national development, and to the present he has carried his organization well to the front. The American Farm Bureau represents the largest organized group of farmers in the United States. Fortunately this organization has developed a program of work of a conservative character and free from many of the radical tendencies which have sprung up during the present term of reconstruction. The fundamental principles of the farm bureau rest upon the true Americanism and a fundamental and abiding faith in American institutions. The organization appreciates that agriculture is the basic source for successful national development and the energies of the organization are devoted to the welfare of agriculture in both its productive and economic relationships, in order that the industry as a whole may continue to be representative and function for national progress.
The American Farm Bureau Federation maintains eight bureaus or departments which deal with national affairs, in which the farmer is interested. These bureaus articulate into the various states and give service directly through the state federations.
The California Farm Bureau Federation represents an affiliation of 27 farm bureau in California. It covers 85 per cent of the agricultural area of the state, with a membership which promises this year to reach about 50,000 farmers. The membership of 1920 was something more than 25,000.

Farm Bureau Traveling Conference Week
This is the Farm Bureau Traveling Conference Week. Farm Advisor Whaleborn, Assistant Farm Advisor Waters and Directors Murray Horne, and L. Marchant are traveling over the San Joaquin Valley, studying Farm Bureau projects that part of the state. They will bring to the farmers of Orange co., first-handed information of what the farmers of other counties are undertaking and accomplishing to award better rural conditions and more profitable agriculture.
The Farm Bureau seeks, by better and more improved methods, to advance American Agriculture and make possible the production of more and better food for America and the delivery of such food to the ultimate consumer in the best possible condition and at the lowest price consistent with the result obtained.
The information gathered by these gentlemen will be given to the various Farm Centers of the county after their return. Let us all come out and give them a good hearing at every center when they make their report.
READY FOR BUSINESS
The Farm Bureau Elevator Corporation is now ready for business at the elevator on Oakland Estuary, according to announcement of W. H. Helleman, secretary of the State Federation. The elevator is ready to store, clean and condition grain and within a few days will be equipped to load on deep-water vessels.
First call is for a limited amount of grain in order to limber up the machinery and get everything in effective working condition.
Where the grain is shipped in sack instead of bulk, the sacks will be returned. Temporary loading stations for bulk grain are recommended until the elevator system in the interior of the state becomes more general.
Organization Makes Consumers’ Cost Lower
Now it does not by any manner of means follow that cooperative buying companies would be socially beneficial and therefore commendable.
Combinations to buy are combinations to fight in a sense in which combinations to sell are not. The selling combination, while interested in securing a living price for its goods, is also interested in the prosperity of its customers.
It does not force its price up to the killing point. Or if by error it ever does so, it quickly realizes its mistake, and reverses its policy. Not so with the buying combination. It is ruthless. It sweats labor. It crowds down and beats down prices, regardless of human welfare or business or social interests. It fights against and frequently defeats the building up of industries. We had buying combines among the packers in the raisin industry, prior to the establishment of the Association, and those combine all but killed the industry.
The world should encourage, regulate and foster cooperative marketing associations. It should discourage (except where warlike measures are considered necessary by reason of provocative circumstances) all cooperative buying societies.
In cooperative selling and the up-building and encouragement of industry the hope lies of a better and higher civilization.
The Right and Wrong Combination Method
It is frequently assumed that the right to combine for the purpose of selling co-operatively, carries with it as a necessary coronary the right to combine for the purpose of buying cooperatively. This is by no means correct, and the error involved in the assumption should be understood in order that economic discussion may be clarified.
There is no such thing as an unqualified right to combine. No lesser number of people than the entire membership of society have a right to combine for any purpose not sanctioned by society as a whole.
The privilege of combining for all sorts of purposes may be and quite
Organization Makes Consumers’ Cost Lower
The California Associated Raisin Company and the California Peach & Fig Growers find the justification for their existence, not in the benefits conferred thereby on their grower membership, though that is very great, but upon the fact that they operate by a system of marketing that confers clearly demonstrated benefits upon society, abolishes certain flagrant evils so far as the raisin and peach and fig businesses are concerned, and therapy, to that extent, makes the world a better place.
