Says Auto Engineers Back to Four-Cylinder The automotive engineering process is turning more and more to the four-cylinder type of power plant for the motor car, according to W. E. Hauser, of the Quality Motor Co., distributors in Orange-co for the new Sheridan "Quality Car." "Dozens of cars with six, eight, and even 12 cylinders have been placed upon the market and nearly all have stood up under the test of time," says Hauser. "All have their good points, and manufacturers probably will continue to make multi-cylinder engines for a long time to come. However, the four was the first universally adopted type to give general satisfaction, and today when you want power, stamina and economy you will choose a four every time. Truck manufacturers have stuck with the four through every wave of design change. The heavy duty is best handled by the simpler, sturdier and more economical four. With gasoline at its present high price and the tendency of all industries to seek economy in every way possible it is up to the automotive engineers to fall in line and they already have begun to take up the burden. "Last summer the Society of Automotive Engineers discussed that very problem and almost without exception they agreed that the four was the ultimate car. Talels, who was formerly a manufacturer of radiators in Detroit, has opened a general radiator repairing and fender business at 129 N. Lemon-st, where he is equipped to repair all types of tractor, truck and automobile radiators. In searching for a suitable location for his business Mr. Talels feels that in Anaheim he has found one of the fastest growing cities of So. Calif. The radiator core that Mr. Talels is agent for in Anaheim, known as the "Hex-Tube" core, is manufactured from individual seamless copper tubes by the U.S. Cartridge Co., by the extrusion process. This is greatly superior to the drawn or rolled tube inasmuch as the extrusion process produces a tube that has not been strained by numerous operations nor treated by heat for drawing. The tubes being seamless eliminate inside radiator leaks which is about 90 per cent of radiator trouble. The water capacity is about 25 per cent greater than the average cellular type core. All the seams being at the extreme end make repairs a matter of a few minutes and at a very slight expense. This is the core the U.S. Air Service has standardized as stock equipment for their airplanes and the Ansted Co., radiator manufacturers, are guaranteeing to the motor car manufacturers for the life of their car. Any one with a tractor, truck or automobile radiator trouble thousand sharp turns on the Crest route, knows that Boone played the game with Death perched on his shoulder every day last year. "Yes, it's risky, to be sure," said Boone the other day to R. G. Adams of Fullerton, Hudson-Essex dealer for Anaheim and Northern Orange county; "but there is a fascination in it, like any speed game that gets under the skin and you can't let go." "When I changed from motorcycle to that Essex, some of the boys scoffed at the idea of chasing automobiles that way, but the case with which I can overhaul the speeders on those mountain grades proves that I have the ideal combination of power, speed, pick-up, and road-holding ability to negotiate the heaviest pulls and get my man every time. "A word of caution to other speed cops who think of changing over to motor cars. Be sure about the cooling qualities of your motor. That is where I get the stubborn follows in mountain speeding. Most cars heat up on a long hot grode, and when the speeder's car starts to boil my game is won for the Essex never shows the red in the circle of the motormeter." INSISTS ON PARKING MACHINE IN GARAGE Mrs. Florence Whitesell of Garden Grove has sworn to a complaint charging Harley Azlin with disturbing the peace. According to Mrs. Whitesell, she rented a part of her house to Azlin, but did not rent him a garage in the rear. She says that Azlin insists on keeping a machine in the place. He became abusive and used vulgar language, she says, when she or devised him to remove the car. Mrs. Whitesell says Azlin made a bonfire near the garage after spilling gasoline about the floor. Anaheim Machine Shop Making Improvements The extensive improvements in the building of the Anaheim Machine shop in the nature of an extension reaching to the alley have been completed. The machine shop which formerly occupied the front part of the building has been moved to the new annex and several pieces of additional machinery have been installed. Irving Abramsohn, proprietor, states that he now has one of the most thoroughly equipped establishments of its character in the county and is prepared to care for any kind of work. Special care will be given to cylinder grinding and the manufacture of wrist pins. No Joy In Using Poor Tires or Sick Battery Is there any joy in motoring with poor tires or a sick storage battery? Be Certain to Keep Your Tires Inflated Be sure and keep your tires inflated to at least twenty pounds to the diameter inch at all times, regardless of weather or road conditions, states Clyde S. Williams, of the Anaheim Vulcanizing Works. The cause of ninety per cent of the tire trouble of today, is under-inflation. We all know the tire is the most abused part of the present day automobile. The tire is built round, and if when being used it is not inflated with pressure sufficient to keep it round, there is bound to be a flat spot where the tire comes in contact with the road. The tire is built round, and if when being used it is not inflated with pressure sufficient to keep it round, there is bound to be a flat spot where the tire comes in contact with the road. In that way, as the tire rolls over, the tread will move forward on the carcass, while the carcass itself will move back, and as the portion of the tread on the ground is released it will naturally come back to its proper position. Of course, there is no great amount of weaving back and forward in that way, but there is a sufficient amount to eventually pulverize the cushion gum between the different plies and also between the breaker strip and tread, and in that way loosen the tread and allow the plies to chafe upon each other until the tire will eventually blow out. This applies to all tire construction, but if you will follow our suggestion, as we have made a careful study of why Miller users get additional mileage, you will eliminate troubles and inconvenience and increase your tire mileage. Officer Synchronizes Brain and Motor Car Synchronizing a man's brain and his motor car has been proved possible through J. C. Boone, traffic officer of San Bernardino county. Thirty thousand miles in thirty weeks as speed cop on the "Rim O' the World" is the basis for the claim of Boone's friends that his brain and the mechanism of his Essex motor are tuned in closer unison than ever before attained by man. "Everyone familiar with the Waterman Canyon Switch-backs, the steep grades of City Creek cut off, the precipitous slopes of that section known as the Snow Slides, and the Cracks Valley Record Between Los Angeles and San Francisco The elapsed time of a Studebaker Light Six for the trip was 9h. 15m. 50s. This singes four minutes and ten seconds from the previous Los Angeles-San Francisco valley mark. Above, Paul Hoffman, giving Hart L. Weaver the high sign for the start. Center, Bill Cook and Phil Sheridan waving good-bye as the Studebaker eased out of town. Below, a government official delivering a pouch of mail for the run north. The most remarkable part of the trip was that dense fog clogged the way for over 100 miles. Harry Rilley, local Studebaker dealer, is elated over this last smashing feat as this car now holds all speed records between California's two big cities, coast route, valley route and round trip.
