THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER An Independent Newspaper, Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday. R. W. ERNEST, Manager. PAUL V. HESTER, Editor Subscription rate—In No. Orange-co: Per year, $1; six months, $1.25. Outside No. Orange-co: Per year, $1; six months, $1.60. Entered at the Postoffice at Anaheim, Calif., as second class matter. DAILY CREATING TO OUR HEADERS But slaves, that once conceived the glowing thought Of freedom, in that hope itself possesses All that the contest calls for—spirit, strength, The scorn of danger, and united hearts, The surest presage of the good they seek. Cowper. HELP STARVING CHINA! The worst of the long list of disasters that have visited the people of this globe, from the destruction of Pompeii in 79 A.D., to the late world war, is happening right now in China. China is starving! The death rate at last accounts was about seven every minute. The lives of 45,000,000 are in danger, and of this number 15,000,000 seem doomed to certain death. Only quick efforts on the part of China's friends in the outside world can keep the figure from going even beyond that. "There is no doubt," says Mr. H. H. Benjamin, Chairman of the local committee, "that the American people feel that they have been called upon rather heavily, not only during the war, but for every kind of relief work since. Like true Americans, however, they will respond." The U.S. is known the world over as a nation always ready to help the weak and afflicted." The critical weeks have arrived, as the hoarded stores of food are giving out and the strength to perform the work of spring planting can only be conserved thru outside assistance. It is impossible to describe the awful conditions as they exist. People live on the bark of trees, thistles and sandburs, not fit for animals to eat. Fathers and mothers are killing their children, rather than see them starve before their eyes, and in many cases, whole families are committing suicide by mixing poison with their last scanty meal. We do not know the meaning of poverty in America. Relief organizations are working, but need millions of dollars. Also, unless help is given very soon, the accomplishments of the American missionaries H. P. Noll Public Accountant and Auditor Orange County Audit & Collection Co. Gentlemen: Since July 1st, 1920 I have driven my Velie approximately 19,000 miles. The total repair bill up to date is $8,355. Gasoline mileage is very satisfactory; running approximately 21 miles to the gallon. It is also very economical on oil and tires. In regard to power it has plenty at all times; in fact I have never needed more, and my work takes me into all parts of California. The Velie 34 is equally good on the desert and in the hills. Sincerely yours, J.F. Nixon THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA in the five northern provinces of China will be completely wiped out. A greater and more worthy need for our help could scarcely be imagined. We should give for the sake of humanity, for the sake of our historic friendship for China, for the sake of America herself, and should do it now. What money given to China famine fund will do? Three cents will save one life one day. One dollar will save one life one month. Five dollars will save a life until harvest. Five dollars will save one family one month. Twenty-five dollars will save a family until summer. Donations to the China Famine Fund may be made at any bank in Anaheim. CO-OPERATION IS PLEDGED BY M. HARDING. Mr. Harding is going into the presidency as a pronounced conciliator. His aim, his friends say, will be to be a second McKinley in this. Mr. Harding is quoted as having said recently to a senator who conferred with him: "I intend to be friends with congress; I know congress is willing to be friends with me. Together, we will get things done; apart, we shall merely create trouble." Theoretically, this has a very promising appearance. Even in practice, Mr. Harding, as a compliant president, doubtless will get more done than if he attempted to accomplish his purpose by steam-roller methods. But there comes time in the administration of the most conciliatory of presidents when the white house must be firm against some element at the capitol. Mr. Harding will not find the presidential course smooth and free from storm at all times. He may hold out the olive branch to congress and succeed that way a great deal of the time. But there will be occasions when he must get his way—if he is to get it at all—by sternly using a rod of iron. All things considered, the conciliatory, co-operative method applied from the white house perhaps will achieve more in the near future than a more assertive, dogmatic method of dealing with congress. THE HARDING smile bids fair to become famous. tions and resources were not emphasized throughout the earth by judicious promotional publicity. PROFITEERING should be outlawed for all time by state and national statutes that will stand the test of the courts. THE DESPOILING hand of greed should be kept off such vital natural resources as the nation's reserve timber supply. THE FRUITS of that railroad horror in Indiana should be greater care in protecting human lives in operating railway trains. IT is to be hoped that a man of the statesmanly acumen and administrative abilities of General Wood can be induced to accept the governor-generalship of the Philippines. ECONOMIC readjustment is not a process of "flow on forever." Evidences multiply to show that the process is about complete in this country. Affairs economic are beginning to take on that full-readjusted look. THE UNITED STATES will keep peace with all the world if all the world is as fair and just and honorable in dealing with this nation as this nation is, and will continue to be, in its dealings with other countries. THE LEAGUE of Nations is trying to halt the impending war between Panama and Costa Rica. Commendable enough. But cannot the League find other impending conflicts of greater magnitude in Europe to engage its attention? GOOD, capable men, when induced to take public office and to serve the people talented and well, should not be held up to captious, unreasonable criticism. The man in office is entitled to a square deal, as well as the public which he serves. ARBOR DAY should be observed generally throughout th state. Its observance should be marked by actual planting of trees. The children of today should be impressed with the vital importance of planting trees, replenishing denuded forests and of conserving the timber supply of the nation. If this were several centuries ago numerous dark hints of witchcraft, with attendant threats of dire punishment, would be going the rounds among members of Santa Ana Lodge No. 794, B. P. Q. E. And all because L. A. Schlesinger has stirred up several dozen members of the lodge by his uncanny mastery over billiard cues, fire shovels and like articles. It seems that Schlesinger thinks absolutely nothing of causing one or more billiard cues to stand on end and away backward and forward as he directs. And his ability to mesmerize, or hypnotize a fire-shovel is positively dumbfounding, lodge members declare. Several Elks were sitting around the fireplace at the Santa Ana club, arguing as usual. Sam Burke asserted that Schlesinger had the power to hypnotize and control a billiard cue. Frank Burns, ridiculed this assertion. Burke obtained a billiard cue and tried unsuccessfully for five minutes to "mesmerize" it. Finally, he called Schlesinger. Burke explained Burke's skepticism. Schlesinger took the cue and without any preliminary maneuvers, set it on the rug, butt-end to, let go of it and , lo and behold, the cue stood there as if nailed. Then, at his command, it swayed to him and from him. All this time his hands were at least two feet from the cue. Then he did the same thing with a dozen cues bunched together. Then he picked up the ash shovel from the fireplace, made it stand on its edge and sway to and from him. Finally, he closed his performance by making the fire poker stand on its end and "shimmy." When Will K. Duffy, steward at the club, was asked his opinion of the stunt, he said that Schlesinger surely was under the influence of a certain personage commonly described as wearing horns and dressed in rosette garb. But Duffy's goat is not the only one that Schlesinger Mr. PRESIDENTIAL campaign expenditures should be limited to a reasonable sum. MR. WILSON retires from the white house deserving of the respect and good will of his countrymen. THE WORLD's remembrance of California would become dull, in time, if this state's advantages, attracts GOOD, capable men, when induced to take public office and to serve the people talentedly and well, should not be held up to captious, unreasonable criticism. OPTIMISM IS commendable beyond words. But it should be tempered with reason. It should rest upon a solid foundation of fact, and of reasonable expectation. It is possible to distort a virtue into an evil, disastrous thing. Optimism carried to a foolish extreme, would be a bane instead of a blessing. AS THE policies of the new national administration unfold—and they will develop with reasonable colority, no doubt—economic conditions should feel the stimulating influence. There will be a settling and stabilizing that has been impossible in the last several months, with the change of administration imminent and with the greater When Willis K. Duffy, steward at the club, was asked his opinion of the stunt, he said that Schlesinger surely was under the influence of a certain personage commonly described as wearing horns and dressed in rosette garb. But Duffy's gont is not the only one that Schlesinger has. There are more than three dozen Elks' nannies in the possession of the former movie man. It is possible that Schlesinger may demonstrate his power at the next regular meeting of the Elks' lodge.
