DAILY GREETING TO OUR READERS

RHODES SCHOLARS FROM AMERICA SURPASS
The American student, while going strongly for athletics, is not deficient in scholarship, on the whole.
It is shown, for example, that American Rhodes scholars take more first and second honors in the honor schools of Oxford University than do the English honor men.
The criticism sometimes is heard that American universities are crowded with scions of rich families who go to these institutions just to live—to get through by following the line of least resistance.
It is true, according to educational experts, that the remarkable increase in the enrollment of institutions of higher learning has resulted in an appreciable lowering of the general level of scholastic achievement. But this would be true, no doubt, in any country on earth. It may be asserted, with the confidence of conviction, that American students will compare favorably with the scholars of any other land under the sun; and that the level of scholastic achievement in American universities and colleges will bear comparison with similar institutions in other countries.
WHATSOEVER the schools teach, should be taught thoroughly.
GENERAL OBREGON leaves no doubt as to who is president of Mexico.

PAY YOUR income tax with devout thankfulness that you have an income big enough to be subject to tax.
THE FACT that Mrs. Harding makes delicious waffles does not detract from her popularity with the men folks.
AMONG THE American years which find ready sale in foreign markets there are none of those that fishermen tell.
EITHER Mr. Harding is a successful fisherman or else the correspondents are charitable in their reports of his catch.
MR. McADOO, in other words, is to be the Moses to lead the railroads of Mexico out of the financial and economic wilderness.
MANY ARTISTS of world-wide fame come to California to live, either temporarily or permanently. There is in this God's land an atmosphere that inspires artistic development.
WHILE PUBLIC attention is directed to the horrors of kidnapping by the case of Mrs. Wiltherell, the time is ripe to strengthen state law against this super-craven offense.
MAKE THE penalty for kidnapping so severe that this crime will be banished from California, or become of such infrequent occurrence as to be negligible.
WHILE Mrs. Harding is fishing in Florida it is to be hoped that he will catch a practical, acceptable plan for bringing the nations into a strong association for the preservation of righteous peace.
THE COMMON soldier of the world war is being honored by all the free nations which participated in the struggle—honored as the common soldier never before has been. The importance and the indispensability of the part played by the common people in the great drama of life. In war and in peace, are being recognized now more than ever before.
IT IS gratifying to note that so many community enterprises of an artistic nature are being instituted and fostered here in California. The drama, music, dancing, physical culture, and other arts and forms of diversion and development, are presented creditably by home talent, thus evolving latent endowments that might never

DISMISS ALL FEARS OF TYPHUS IN U.S.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 11—Despite most drastic protective measures, typhus carriers are entering the U.S., Commissioner General of Immigration Anthony Caminetti stated today. He expressed confidence, however, that "the plague will power get beyond the confines of the quarantine zone."
Dr. Hugh S. Cummings, surgeon general of the U.S., public health service, admitted that cases of the dread plague are entering the country, but declared that he had no fears of an epidemic.
In spite of the confidence of Caminetti and Dr. Cummings, members of congress are aroused at the situation and Senator King, Democrat of Utah, announced today that he will wage a fight on the senate floor for the immediate passage of legislation barring all immigrants for a period of at least one year.
