Only tiny, silvery trout are taking the "flies" in this case after carloads of campers in khakl have "beat it" up the Ventura boulevards, keeping the "speed cops" busy to hold down the sporting ardor that seemingly can't get their quick enough, and seems more infectious than the "flu" this season. Dwindling appreciably in volume, the scanty streams are still turning off catches that seem to satisfy their devotees, limit creels of five and six inches fairly killed on the artificial fly being not so bad sport after all. Some real fish are coming along from time to time to punctuate the average of "fingerlings." The trout of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties are fast becoming educated, and harder to catch. Those going far back into the hills report splendid sport and bigger fish; the upper Seespe is excellent, and of course the trout have not had the education lavished upon their more accessible relatives along the highway fringed main reaches of the rivers. Water levels are keeping up well in the streams which drain snowy ranges, but those rising in the lower hills are shrinking so fast that the end of their fishing can be foretold However, by the end of the month they will have relief through the wide scattering of the anglers over the remainder of Southern California which opens May 1. Expert Oxy-acetylene Welding at the KERN CYCLE CO., Work Guaranteed Radiators Repaired Water levels are keeping up well in the streams which drain snowy ranges, but those rising in the lower hills are shrinking so fast that the end of their fishing can be foretold However, by the end of the month they will have relief through the wide scattering of the anglers over the remainder of Southern California which opens May 1. Classic sport is reported in the Sisquoc by Deputy Fish and Game Commissioner Henry J. Abels of Santa Maria. He pictures fish averaging 10 inches and plenty a foot to fourteen great, lusty dark beauties that taste just as good as they look, for the feed in this watershed is wonderful. Interest of anglers is centered in the Fish and Game Commission's reports on conditions in Bear Valley, the San Jacinto, Deep Creek, and the near San Gabriel watershed, all of which will play to record turnouts the first of May. Louis Phillips, in charge of the Fish and Game Commission's most extensive fishcultural work in Bear Valley, where seven experts are handling great, gorgeously colored trout as fast as they can relieve them of their eggs, reports everything as promising at that point. "The fish are running good at present, and unless we get some very stormy and cold weather the latter part of this month, we look forward to a record egg-take here this year." Phillips also hazards a prediction for the benefit of the angling licensees, which, coming from a man of his experience and judgment, may be accepted as "the goods." He writes: "Should the weather hold fine and warm the way it is at the present time, we look for some very fine fishing in the lake right at the opening of the season. The fish are certainly here in abundance and all it will take to have them biting good is seasonable weather." If it's from Witman's, it's good.
