AMERICA IN BEST CONDITION OF AN NATION IN WORLD
Anaheim national bank's bulletin letter for February says:
The closing weeks of the first months following the signing of armistice finds trade more or less the throes of uncertainty. Whole jobbing and retail trade are work on the quick "turn-over" basis, avoiding overstocking and for first time reports come that conditions are beginning to drag.
When we consider that during nineteen months that the U.S. was actively engaged in she drew 4,000,000 of the flow her manhood from industry, formed more than 10,000 industries from pursuits of petroleum to the work of war, stripped and tailed thousands of other enterprises engaged in lines considered no essentials to the winning of the built up with emergency measure guaranteed food supply to meet promise of a prolonged struggle then was presented with an unexpected peace. Where is the groove for complaint or criticism when a meral business pulls the grade with comparatively little friction?

This a Democracy
Can it be possible that Americans are so obsessed with the counsel of fear and selfishness that they cannot reason rightly? From what source does the influence come that is striving to misdefine freedom and hide the fact that the United States Government is a Democracy—a Government immortally defined as one "Of the people," by the people and for the people," and never designed to give quarters, grant favors or share its power with any particular portion, class or element of the people? The United States today is remolling under the menace of an element unfriendly to peace, progress and equal rights.
Armed with the venom of class prejudice, this element is striving to teach Labor to battle Capital for a larger measure of independent freedom than is possible for any one division of society to possess under the safeguards and restrictions of the Constitution of the United States. Great and vital as Capital and Labor are to the growth of the nation, neither can rule with a power that affects the independent freedom of the third great force of our Government, which is the people—the Government itself.
Today, Labor has a great opportunity. It lies along the lone of a sober understanding of social and economic factors. We recognize the fact that we are laboring in an interval when the purchasing power of the dollar is low and that it requires the close, friendly co-operation of Capital, Labor and Governemnt to restore it to normal. We feel that it is of consequence to the largest portion of the American people that a normal business footing be speedily and harmoniously returned and we stand ready with our co-partner, Capital, to peacefully do our right part in this readjustment.
Germany Stopped
Does the world believe that the war is over? Does Christendom think that because Germany as an armed enemy of civilization has been stopped, stripped and policed by those she intended to crush that she is subdued and regrets her actions? Germany is still a peril. She is unrepentant and unreformed. We will be wise if we do not hastily release this criminal nation, waiting until there is more tangible evidence than now exists that she is safe to be allowed to act without restraint. Germany's boisterous song of militarism has been changed to a seductive mental lullaby and she as a "peril" will grow if through the cadence of her sophistry we are rendered forgetful of the overwhelming evidence of her criminal guilt. Read Earnest Hamilton Abbott's article, "Have the Germans Won the War?" in the January 15th Outlook, of New York, and the situation will be better appreciated.

NO "Class Consciousness"
In the other instance, and under the leadership of the true spirit of American democracy, which has no "class conscieniousness," Labor can say we understand that in the process of business reconstruction from the inflated basis of strife to the natural and firmer footing of peace, that arbitrary losses will fall upon arbitrary groups and classes of activity. We appreciate that any attempt to sustain labor costs above sound, normal, economic levels, will react to a disadvantage to ourselves.
