OWENS PLANS CHOW HOUSE LIKE ARMY'S
An idea of how they hand out the grub wholesale in the army is contained in the following interesting letter received from her son, Fred, by Mrs. D. J. Owen, of Kroeger-st. The letter, written at St. Nazaire, Feb. 6, follows in part:
Am now working in the kitchen at this camp and like the job well. Have a real government position, eight hours on and 16 off. The disadvantage is that we work every day and never know what day of the week it is.
Last Sunday General Perahing paid the camp a visit and you can take it for granted that there was quite a little preparation. We had these niggers in the kitchen working and the place looked fine.
Largest Kitchen in France
Don't know whether I have told you about the kitchen or not. It is the largest one in France and hence probably the largest in the world. We are now only feeding between four and eight thousand a meal but that is just a part of the capacity. They fed 15,000 one dinner here without a whole lot of trouble. The food is cooked in boilers and cans, most of the cooking is done on a stove which is built in the floor so that the top of the stove is level with the floor and cans are slid off and on. The mob comes in 16 lines and passes by a bench which has the food on it and servers dish it out. If everything goes right, about 7500 can be put thru in an hour which isn't slow anyway.
Might Start One at Home
Have been thinking about starting a chow house on this same principle when I get home. Don't know whether it would go or not unless I could get some means of forcing them thru. You see here they can take their choice between eating this way or going hungry. They usually eat.
The only thing I don't like about it is the possibility of getting stuck here for the rest of the A. E. F. life.
I'm going to try and bring home a dog from over here if I can get hold of a good one. Wedd, bon nuit. Your loving son, FRED.

WIND BLOWS AWAY
RAINS AT CYPRESS
CYPRESS, Mar. 7—Special—About the time we think the people of Europe have decided to stop fighting a new war breaks out, like-wise, about the time we think the elements have settled down for a good old California rain along comes a new wind. We have had more good rains puffed away by the wind-god this season than ever before in the history of our section. Amous Bradley says that there is lots of time for rain yet. We hope Amous known.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Dugan gave a farewell dinner to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Miller on Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Miller made many friends during the three months they visited here and it was with sincere well wishes that Cypress folk hade them god-speed on their homeward journey. The Millers will long remember the royal good time had by them Saturday evening. Mrs. Dugan's entertaining ability is well known through our section and it will suffice to say that was a most pleasurable evening, for all those present.
Jack Fuquay has recovered from his injury of last week to the extent of walking about. The injured back still forbids him from being anything but dignified.
Mrs. E. John has purchased the Elli P. Fay place located just east of Cypress. Mrs. John intends to establish an up-to-date poultry ranch.
