Religion In America
Major Study of Nation’s Religions Shows Wide Spectrum of Belief
By LOUIS CASSELS
United Press International
There may not be any atheism in foxholes, but there are some in churches.
Among the 110 million Americans affiliated with Christian churches, there also are agnostics, deists and people who think that Jesus Christ was only a man.
The beliefs—and disbeliefs—of American church members have been carefully investigated by two sociologists, Rodney Stark and Charles Y. Glock of the Survey Research Center of the University of California in Berkeley.
They questioned nearly 3,000 church members of all denominations. The respondents constituted a random sample of the membership of all church congregations in four counties in the San Francisco area.
If the same survey were conducted in other parts of the country, the results might differ by a few percentage points. But the California sample included small town and big city churches, of every theological coloration from Roman Catholic to Pentecostal, and there is no reason to doubt that it is fairly representative of the nation as a whole.
The Stark-Glock findings strongly corroborate a warning which many pastors and religious educators have sounded in recent years: The biggest task which confronts churches today is converting their own
The postwar boom in church membership brought into churches millions of people who were not convinced Christians, but who were looking for a faith to live by and were willing to listen to what the churches had to offer.
It is evident from the Stark-Glock survey that many of them are still looking—or have settled for a set of religious attitudes which fall far short of the orthodox Christian faith.
It is also strikingly apparent that skepticism about major Christian doctrines is much more widespread in such Protestant denominations as the United Church of Christ, the Methodist Church and the Episcopal Church than it is in fundamentalist bodies such as the Southern Baptist Convention and the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church.
Although Roman Catholics tested fairly high in orthoxy compared to Protestants as a whole, one of the surprises of the survey was the substantial number of Catholics who acknowledged doubts or disbeliefs about basic dogmas of the faith.
In response to the question, "which of the following statements comes closest to what you believe about God," 81 per cent of the Catholics and 71 per cent of the Protestants affirmed that "I know God really exists and I have no doubts about it."
Thirteen per cent of the Catholics and 17 per cent of
"While I have doubts, I that I do believe in God."
Three per cent of the Catholics and 17 per cent of the Protestants subscribed to a position: "I don't believe in personal God, but I do believe in a higher power of good kind."
One per cent of the Catholics and one per cent of the Protestants were frankly agnostic: "don't know whether there is God and I don't believe this is any way to find out."
Flat Disbeliefs
Finally, one per cent of the Congregationalists (Un Church of Christ) and so what smaller numbers of Moldists and Episcopalians (feel than one-half of one per cent said flatly: "I don't believe God.")
Divergences from orthodoxy were much more marked; beliefs about Jesus. Tal Protestants as a whole, 86 per cent were ready to affirm Jesus is the divine Son of God. But denominational differences were great. Belief in the dignity of Christ ranged from per cent among Southern Protestants to only 68 per cent among Congregationalists, 76 per cent among Methodists, and 84 per cent among Episcopalians.
Other denominational shifts: Disciples of Christ, per cent; Presbyterians, 91 per cent; American Lutherans, per cent; American Baptists, 92 per cent; Catholics, 94 per cent; Missouri Lutherans,
Mayor Jack Hileman Proclaims Navy League Week in Orange
Mayor Jack Hileman today proclaimed the five day period starting Oct. 27 as Navy League Week in Orange and urged all citizens to take part in appropriate observance of the occasion.
"It is of vital interest to all citizens of the United States that we possess a sound national defense," said Hileman in his proclamation, "and it is well known that our strong Navy and Marine Corps are making great contributions to the security of our nationa and free men everywhere."
Hileman said Navy Week has special significance in the Orange County area "where so many of our Navy and Marine Corps installations are located and where so many men and women in the service have distinguished themselves as members of the community."
Focal point in the week-long series of activities will be Newport Harbor, where four Navy ships will be open to the public next Saturday.
98.38% PERFECT!
Practice Makes Almost Perfect
98.38%. That's about as close to perfection as anything can come. In this case the subject is the quality of home loans. California Federal has over 48,000 first mortgage loans representing an investment of about $950 million. And 98.38% of them are in good standing with all payments up to date. Loan quality like that is nothing short of sensational even for a practiced lender like California Federal. It tells you what a remarkable group of people California Federal borrowers are... and how careful were the California Federal counselors who approved the loans. And it tells our 412,000 savers that, for dividends and safety, their savings could not be in better hands. As someone has said, nobody's perfect. But we keep trying.

County Officers Urge Yes Vote on ‘A’ – ‘B’
Several key Orange County officials today urged a “yes” vote on Propositions A and B, the courts and county jail bond issues.
Both issues are on the Nov. 3 election ballot and require a two-thirds majority vote to pass.
State Sen. John A. Murdy, Jr., chairman of the countywide Citizens Committee for Yes on Propositions A and B, released the comments of the officials.
Here’s what they have to say:
Raymond Thompson, Presiding Judge of the Superior Court, said: “Administration of justice through a court system is one of the first and most basic functions of an organized society. It is universally felt that this should be carried on in surroundings that are comfortable, dignified, and such as to inspire respect for the laws, liberties, and Constitutional safe - guards upheld and applied by the courts.
Throughout the country, even in the most sparsely settled rural communities, the County Courthouse is the one building which is usually the most outstanding and to which the citizens point with pride.”
C. M. “Cye” Featherly, member, Orange County Board of Supervisors, said: “Because of the extreme urgency, the new County Jail and Courthouse are abolute necessities. The best way to handle the financing of these new buildings is through the issuance of bonds payable over the years at only about $1 per year per home.”
William L. Murray, Judge of the Superior Court pointed out:
efficiently — with big savings to the taxpayers — if the courts were property housed in a central location. We have the responsibility of providing more courtrooms in the immediate future. This responsibility must be met.”
Sheriff James A. Musick pointed out: “It is imperative that a new maximum security jail be constructed in Orange County at the earliest possible moment. The present facility is antiquated, obsolete, woefully inadequate and critically overcrowded. Daily bookings are constantly increasing as the population growth of the county continues. The people of Orange County must face up to their obligation of providing funds for a new County Jail that will conform to the required standards. The proposed bond issue is the most economical means of financing this project.”
The Orange County Citizens’ Committee for “YES” on Proposition 2 today launched its final drive to bring to public attention the importance of the $380 million higher education bond measure to California’s public University, college and junior college campuses.
Chairman Charles A. Pearson, former mayor of Anaheim, announced establishment of subcommittees in every major community in support of Proposition 2, which allocates almost $17 million into California State College at Fullerton University.

The men are locked together in such close confinement that I believe it's a tribute to Sheriff Musick an diss staf that there has been no serious riot or jail break in recent years. The jail is so old that the maintenance of security is difficult."
Willaim Hirstein, member of the Board of supervirors, said: "Propositions 'A' and 'B' on the November 3 ballot are the most economical method of financing the much-needed jail and court facilities. Our jail is badly over-crowded; we are fortunate that we haven't had riots within the jail, as it frequently houses more than double its designed capacity. Our present courts are scattered all about the Civic enter. In my opinion, they could be operated much more efficiently and"

Long-Time Ties With Sister City
Cultural relations with Orange's sister city Orange, New South Wales, Australia, were begun back in the early 1930's when Prof. Roy Stanhope suggested his students correspond with students here.
This came to light this weekend when Prof. Stanhope, visiting Orange, attended the exhibit on Australia at the library. The exhibit is part of the work of the Orange Sister City Committee.
Prof. Stanhope noticed the existence of Orange, Calif., when he was reading a trade journal and noticed the author, Vernon C. Shippee, was a high school science instructor here.
Letters were written and shipped, by boat, to Orange, Calif., by Prof. Stanhope's students. Prof. Stanhope and Vernon Shippee, who taught in Orange for 33 years, also corresponded.
Prof. Stanhope is here in Orange on a research project for the Australian State Department.

The insurance waiver protects your account with First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Alhambra doesn't cost you—or the taxpayers—a penny.

As an arm of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, FSLIC is a completely self-supporting government agency. Savings accounts in the member associations are insured up to $10,000. Backing FSLIC's good name are 1964 resources of almost a billion dollars—plus the U. S. Government.
In the 30 years since FSLIC was established, no saver has lost a penny covered by its insurance. Such, too, is the enviable record of First Federal Savings of Alhambra since its founding some 39 years ago!

Letters were written and shipped, by boat, to Orange, Calif. by Prof. Stanhope's students. Prof. Stanhope and Vernon Shippee, who taught in Orange for 33 years, also corresponded.
Prof. Stanhope is here in Orange on a research project for the Australian State Department of Education and is visiting Mrs. Shippee, who resides at 248 Cambridge.
"One of the links between the two Oranges is that they are both fruit producing areas, except that Orange, Australia, is a cherry, apple and pear region rather than oranges," Stanhope said. He believed that both Oranges had about the same population in the early 30's.
"The climate and the terrain are also something that Orange California and Orange, New South Wales, have in common." Stanhope said.
Stanhope first visited Orange, Calif. in 1937 when he did post graduate work at Stanford.
Considered to be one of the leaders in science education in Australia now, Stanhope is in the United States this time on a three month project to investigate new developments in science curriculum and determine whether they can be adapted in Australia.
Prof. Stanhope is presently head of the Science Education department at the Sydney Teachers College and has recently written and co-edited a four-year science textbook for high schools in Australia.
The professor said he was "greatly surprised with the growth of Orange since his visit here in 1937."
