'Showboat' Cast Termed 'Lively' If Melodyland's "Showboat" is half as lively and interesting as its cast, headed by Harve Presnel, Andy Devine and Gogi Grant, the threatre-in-the round's fall season opener can't help breaking all records. Others in the "Showboat" cast, who will make their bow to Orange County musical audiences Tuesday, are Bill Smith, who songs "Old Man River," Wynne Miller, Broadway actress, comic Mary Wickes and dancer Jack Good. Devine, who plays Captain Andy, is an eight-year resident after starring with Betty Hutton in the theater's premiere production of "Annie Get Your Gun." Presnell became interested in music at the age of eight, and turned down an athletic scholarship to UCLA to follow a career in music. Long-time musical favorites i "Showboat" are "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Why Do I Love You?" and "Bill." DEL MAK (UPI) — A field of seven battles for the 5,000 Li- more; Robert M. Show Boat Docks At Melodyland "Showboat," one of the masterpieces of the American stage, and the first attraction in Melodyland Theatre's Fall Musical Series, opens a two week run tonight. "Show Boat" was first produced on Broadway by the late, great Florenz Ziegfeld who gave it a lavish presentation. Melodyland Theatre producers Sammy Lewis and Danny Dare in turn, have spared neither effort or expense to make the local production topnotch in its own right. Some of the finest talent in musical circles appear in key roles. Harve Presnell, who scored such a hit in the film, "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," plays Gaylord Ravenal, the river gambler; Gogi Grant will do the Helen Morgan part; rotund Andy Devine will be seen as Cap'n Andy of the show boat Cotton Blossom; lovely Wynne Miller will sing the ingenuue role of Magnolia, while Big Bill Smith, who has played over 2500 times in "Show Boat," will be heard in the part made famous, first by Jules Bledsoe, then Paul Robeson. Bill, of course, will sing Jerome Kern's immortal "Ol' Man River." Five more musical successes will complete the Fall Schedule. They are "High Button Shoes," "Damn Yankees," "Milk and Honey," "Silk Stockings" and "She Loves Me." Boy Suspended From Classes--Beatle Haircut ESCONDIDO, Calif. (UPI) — Donald Rogers, 13, reported to his eighth grade class at Orange Glen Elementary School Monday, but was promptly suspended for six days for having a Beatle haircut. "We are not looking for a close order drill in our students," said Principal Ron Jahelka. "We hope the students will project their own personalities. But there are better ways to do it." "It's my own hair and I think I should be able to wear it the way I want it," said the youngster. "Anyway, I'm not going to cut it." IMMUNIZATION URGED AGAINST INFLUENZA County health officials today urged the immunization of certain persons against an expected outbreak of influenza throughout Orange County later this year. The warning was contained in a bulletin issued to physicians by County Health Officer Dr. Edward Lee Russell. Dr. Russell said the outbreak would involve 'influenza B,' a different strain than the type that hit California in 1963-64. The discomforts caused by either the B or A—which includes Asian Flu—are considered equal. In recommending a vaccine against the probable outbreak, Dr. Russell urged that persons past 65, pregnant women and patients with a chronic debilitating disease seek immunization. Those vaccinated since July 1963 can be immunized by taking a single booster shot, Dr. Russell said. Primary vaccination — one dose followed by another two months later—will be required by persons who have not been vaccinated since July, 1963. SCHOOL DROP-OUTS HEADED FOR TROUBLE There's a good chance that the school drop-out is headed for juvenile crime. Thomas F. Kelly, coordinator for youth opportunities of Orange County Schools, addressing Orange Lions Club substantiated his conviction that drop-outs are headed for trouble by quoting statistics that show that 95 per cent of 17-year-olds, 85 per cent of 16-year-olds, and 50 per cent of the 15-year-olds involved in crime have dropped out of school. "It csts $400 a year to send a child to school, and $400 a month to rehabilitate him in a penal institution," Kelly said. He added that in 1900 only 50 per cent of the children of eligible school age went to school, and only 15 per cent graduated from high school. In 1963, 90 per cent of the eligible stuntuers were enrolled and 67 per cent graduated, Kelly added. "Between 1960 and 1970, there will be 7.5 million drop-outs, and by 1970 only 5 per cent of the labor force will be involved in non-skilled work," he said. Kelly emphasized that dropping out is a normal process rather than an evil. "It is the flooding of the labor market with unskilled persons that is evil," he said. Inter-Church Club Inducts New Officers Installation of recently elected officers took place at the September 9 meeting of the inter-church women's group, the CMP Club, held at the home of Mrs. J. Ads All-Star at Disneyland Disneyland will present its most spectacular musical event of the year, "Dixieland at Disneyland" starring Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong for two nights, September 25 and 26. Staged on the vast Rivers of America in Frontierland, the opening pageantry will re-tell America's greatest musical legend, the birth of jazz. Like Armstrong, the cast of more than 300 persons will include many of those who helped create this first truly-American music — many who have become legends in their own lifetimes. This fifth annual "Dixieland at Disneyland" will center around "Satchmo's" own career with even more elaborate staging than in previous years. STATE-WIDE No County Orders For Assessments "No countywide orders raising the assessment level of property will be required this year in any of the 58 counties of California," Richard Nevins, Southern California Member of the Board of Equalization, told the Orange County chapter of the Society of California Accountants at a meeting in Tustin today. The 1964 statewide average ratio of assessed valuations to full cash value established by the Board of Equalization on August 20 was 22.1 per cent, a drop of a full percentage point from last year's 23.1 per cent. This is the largest single-year drop in the statewide average ratio in recent history. Assessed valuations are those used for property tax purposes, whereas cash values represent actual market prices. Nevins, chairman of the Board's Committee on Assessment Practices, indicated that his district has kept assessment levels in Southern California counties within an allowable tolerance. As a result, no orders to raise assessment levels have been issued in Southern California during his term of office, according to Nevins. He has been the Southern California Member for the past five years. The famous Dixieland trumpet player, who starred in the first three such shows at Disneyland, returns this year along with the Young Men from New Orleans, the Firehouse Five Plus Two and other famous groups to be brought here from New Orleans. Also featured will be the Elliott Brothers with their Big Band Dixie and scores of singers and dancers. Starring performers will drift past the riverfront audience a board colorfully decorated floats. Dance and choral production numbers will be presented across the water on a giant 90-foot stage to be erected on the tip of Tom Sawyer's Island. All of the floats plus the paddlewheel steamboat Mark Twain will be used in the explosive finale to the show. Viewing stands will be erected along the Rivers of America to provide additional seating for the show. The riverfront production however, is only the beginning of a full night of Dixieland music. On each of the two nights, the starring musical groups will play for listening and dancing until 2 a.m. at locations throughout Disneyland. On Dixieland days, Disneyland will conclude its regular operating hours at 7 p.m. re-opening for special event from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets on sale at all Desmond's Stores, Wallich's Music City stores and at the Disneyland box office (beginning September 14) will be $4.95 for advance sale and $5.95 after 5 p.m. on September 25. Navel Orange Producers To Nominate A meeting will be held in Orange next Thursday to obtain nominations for two producer members and one handler member to represent independent producers on the committee which administers the federal marketing order for Navel oranges. Similar meetings are scheduled in eight other cities in California and Arizona. The meeting will be held at the Orange County Farm Bureau, 1916 West Chapman starting at 1:30 p.m. Immediately following the Navel orange sessions — at 2 p.m. — lemon producers will meet to nominate three producer members and one handler member, and their respective alternates, to represent independent producers on the lemon administrative committee.
