It’s something every Co Countian should know about — and The Irvine Company directors most cordially extended this Open House invitation at their June meeting.” Visiting Orange Countians are to be welcomed and briefed at an Information Pavilion, staffed by Orange County beauty contest winners, that has been set up on the grounds of the historic Irvine family home, located at the intersection of Myford Road and Irvine Avenue, two miles east of Tustin. Ranch headquarters are most easily reached via the Santa Ana Freeway to the Myford Road off-ramp, then north on Myford Road. Tours, of the do-it-yourself variety, have directional signs and informational boards at viewing stops along the tours, and cover three sectors of the property — Coastal, Agricultural, and Mountain. Visitors make the tour independently in their own cars, and do not drive in caravans. Each party sets its own pace, stopping to make observations where desired. Coastal Sector tours, routed principally along public roads, cover the urbanized 44,000 acres between the ocean and the proposed San Diego Freeway route to the north. Included are the University of California, Irvine campus, adjoining commercial Cameo Highlands, and Eastbluff, as is the newly-designated Irvine Industrial Complex — 2,600 acres set aside on the master plan as a first phase of a 6,000-acre industrial development. Industrial tenants already in the sector include Philco’s Aeronutronic Division, a Ford Motors subsidiary; Collins Radio’s Information Science Center; and Astropower Laboratories of the Missiles & Space Systems Division of Douglas Aircraft. Agricultural Sector Tour will be through the rich farm lands of the Irvine Ranch — 20,000 acres from the San Diego Freeway north to the Lomas de Santiago mountains — with citrus, avocado, and walnut groves; field crops ranging from chili peppers to tomatoes, garbanzo beans to corn; grazing lands for Irvine’s 3,100 head of cattle. In the Mountain Sector, recreation and water development area, attractions include Irvine Lake and Rattlesnake Dam, newest reservoir located in the Lomas Ridge area. Robber’s Roost, in the upper Lomas de Santiago area near an Indian massacre site, is legendary as a haven for early day outlaws. Silverado and Modjeska Canys offer a variety of scenery not found elsewhere in the county. Irvine Park and Bommer Canyon will be included as havens for rest and picnicking. Since Autonetics was founded in 1953, the division has furnished inertial guidance systems for such programs as Minuteman, and the Air Force's Hound-Dog missile. Similar guidance systems for the Navy's Polaris-carrying submarines and for the Navy's Vigilante aircraft have also been designed and produced by Autonetics. Coastal Sector tours, routed principally along public roads, cover the urbanized 44,000 acres between the ocean and the proposed San Diego Freeway route to the north. Included are the University of California, Irvine campus, adjacent commercial and residential areas which will comprise the total University community; and the $4.5-million San Joaquin Reservoir being built on the southeast perimeter of the campus. A full range of residential developments are in this sector, including the Newport Bay area communities of Dover Shores, Irvine Terrace, Cameo Shores.
